Okay, I'm a librarian, but I think this book tried too hard. I just never believed in the main character or the situations. And even though it tries to be funny, it's not funny. The drawings will appeal to kids, and I did like the surprise about Leo at the end, but overall, I was a little bored. Also, pulling a fire alarm is a serious offense in schools and gets kids caught up in the criminal justice system. Not very funny.
Middle School is a very enjoyable book. I rarley read stuff like this. It is about a kid named Raph goes to middle school and finds it really boring so he creats a game called operation Raph where he gets in to as much trouble as he can but later it goes too far and his mom gets very upset. Raph also has home problems because his mom is about to marry a very mean man who only sleeps and eats all day, until..... anyway, Raphis expelled from school the rest of the year but is going to start a new...more

I have just finished reading the book Middle School The Worst Years of My Life.
Rafe, our protagonist has enough problems at home with his lazy soon to be step dad and his poor mother that works the day and night shift at a diner to be able to pay for her sloppy husband. Then, when Rafe gets into middle school, nothing gets better. Being bullied and friend-zoned by his crush didn't make it better either. Then to top it all off, Rafe is not the best student, his grades to turn ou...more

Recommends it for:
I recommend this book to fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
My brother had left this sketchy book on the shelf parallel to my bed. Having walked past it many times, I decided I would read it. Middle School: The Worst Years of my Life is about Rafe Katchadorian, who intends to start his school year with a bang. After he vows to break every rule in the book, he begins to have second thoughts as his year goes awry. Although the book was relatively enjoyable, it lacked depth, and as a result, no quotes stood out to me. The author managed to (barely) pull of...more

Middle school is never an easy time for adolescent children. Between the ages of 11 and 14, everything begins to change for children physically as well as emotionally. Trying to gain acceptance is a very important part of middle school. Kids are trying to “be cool” so that their peers see them as an accepted individual. In this book, Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life, a young boy, Rafe struggles to find his place in the 6th grade. Rafe is an eleven year old boy entering the 6th grade whe...more
Overall: Blah. I picked this up thinking that my 11 year old would think this was amusing since she's going into middle school next year. Turns out this book is anything BUT amusing. It's about a kid who decides to break all the rules as a part of a game. Dumb. Plus I ended up worrying about the mom far more than Rafe who I just wanted to "fix." In the end, Rafe is punished for his ongoing behavior and graffittiing but then rewarded for his creative gifts by sending him to art school. Seriously....more

Ano novo, escola nova.

Middle School. There is a lot to say about it. Some view it as a new beginning, a new slate, and one that shall give you a second chance. Some view it as a promotion, the start of the transition between childhood and adulthood. The others, well, they view it as a survivalist situation. Rafael, or as he prefers to be acknowledged, Rafe, had just entered the sixth grade. In Middle School The Worst Years of My Life, by James Patterson, Rafe struggles with finding who he is in this foreign concept a...more

Rafe is having a hard time with life right now. He's not a popular kid and only has one friend, Leo the Silent (who won't talk to anyone but Rafe). His mother has a new boyfriend/fiance who does nothing but sit on the couch and collect unemployment. Oh, yeah; he likes to yell at Rafe and his little sister Georgia, too. Like I said, life's not great.

3.5 stars. I'll say up front I waffled with the rating and this is at the top of three stars.
In some ways I think Patterson tried a little too hard to "be like Wimpy Kid" and have an authentic middle school voice, which sometimes felt forced, but in other ways he was surprisingly subtle and believable.
The advantage of a first-person narrator is that the character gets to chose how much of himself he wants to reveal, and Rafe parcels out bits that help us understand him more deeply only as his un...more

I think this is a great book that many middle school students can understand. It is about a 6th grade boy named Rafe who is coming to middle school for the first time. He gets an idea that he will try to do something by the end of the school year, which is to break every rule the school has in one year. The book shows his adventures in middle school in this hilarious realistic fiction book meant to make you laugh.

Middle School the Worst Years of My Life by James Patterson and Chris Tebbets is a comical work of contemporary realistic fiction. This book would best be suited to the higher Intermediate(I)/Advanced(A) reading age group. The book is illustrated in the style of a comic book but is extremely graphic with many full page illustrations.

I chose to do my review on this particular book because, it was a fun book to read and every night before I go to bed, I read and I almost always lose track of time from reading and I stay up until at least 10:30. It's a book
that has a lot of chapters but the chapters are very short most of the book and thats what I like to read, so you can actually set and achieve a goal from reading this book. It has a sequel to it and, in the first one, the main character, Rafe Khachadorian, is in sixth grad...more

If you listen to the audiobook, be sure to check out the drawings either on the CD, or in a book; it's not the same without them. This is the first time I can remember listening to an audiobook that made references to the fact that it was audio, so some alterations were made; it even referenced drawings by number.

I like James Patterson's transition into young adult novels. I think he has written a cleaver story with a surprising twist at the end (you'll have to read it to find out!). Patterson does a great job weaving the illustrations into the story line which I've never seen before. Even though this is the typical new boy in school, doesn't have friends, gets picked on, theme... it does make for a great read. Rafe is a likable character who isn't a bad-boy but decides if he is going to survive middle s...more
This book relates to almost any teenager entering middle school for the first time. It is about a boy named Rafe's first year of middle school. During his first day he decides to make up a game, with the help of his friend Leo, called Operation R.A.F.E where he is suppose to break every rule in the middle schools handbook, and he starts this by pulling the fire alarm. Throughout the book Rafe continues to break each of the rules while obtaining points. The point of the game is to get 1,000,000 p...more

Middle School, the Worst Years of My Life, is one of those books that has a simple premise on the surface, but has a much deeper meaning for those who care to ponder over the words a little bit more. Rafe and Leo (his twin?, his imaginary friend?, his nemesis?) concocts a plot to break EVERY rule in the handbook before the end of 6th grade. He (they) nearly succeed, but not without expulsion from school, his mother's consternation, and his own conflicted feelings nagging at him constantly.

Middle School, the Worst Years of My Life, by James Patterson is a great book for 4th-6th graders. It is a good size book (about 290 pages) and it has tons of cool pictures. It only takes about a week and a half to read and it is very funny, exiting, and interesting what Rafe (the main character) has to go through in his new adventure in 6th grade at a new school. He finds out just how hard it is in middle school with teachers, girls, and even bullies. The first day of middle school he hated. He...more
I am really annoyed with most books on middle/junior high school having the same feeling. This follows that pattern. The main character, Rafe, sounds just like Patterson's previous characters and it bothers me. I seriously think all his characters are the same person.
The book basically has a similar structure to Diary of a Wimpy Kid and it's female companion Dork Diaries. There is a journal (or in this case, it's a book the character wrote) and some doodles. However, this book is half doodles a...more

I read this in order to continue on my challenge to find books that my seventh grade daughter and I can read together. My daughter loves, loves, loves the Maxim Ride series by this author. She had to read one for school and quickly devoured the others in quick succession. There is no doubt that James Patterson can write a blockbuster for my daughter's generation as well as my own. He traverses the YA and adult worlds quite well and I knew my daughter would probably enjoy anything by him. Upon se...more
