Ava Delaney calls herself a hybrid - a living, breathing human who happens to have vampire poison running through her veins. The only thing greater than her thirst for human blood is her capacity for guilt. She does her best to avoid the human world, for everyone's sake.

When Ava accidentally enslaves a human while saving him from a vampire, she realises she has to look for...more

Vampire Novel Writing 101:< /b>

(1) Include two boys in a possible love triangle with the heroine. Even if your novel lacks in substance, you can give your reader the illusion of deep emotion by giving empty lust and sexual tension in the story from time to time. Make girls feel that they too can have their cake and eat it too by leading along two boys. Never mind that it's rare in real life for any girl, no matter how great or TOTALLY AWESOME, to have two boys compete for her affections be

I just wasn't grabbed by this book, It was a bit of an effort to read to be honest which is why it gets one star I didn't hate it but I want to actually enjoy a book and feel like I haven't just wasted a few hours. I found it all a bit predictable and the main character irritated me.

(view spoiler)[Ava spends the whole book, literally all of it trying to free Carl (a random guy she's enthralled) as soon as possible and doesn't seem to be aware that she's causing some major problems, actually tha...more

This was a fun vampire read. Honestly, I can't believe how many paranormal books I've read recently. After Twilight I gave up on them for a long time because I was too disgusted. I still do not think there is anything romantic about vampires, (big EW! factor and if you've ever read Dracula, you will agree.) but these books are cheap, and provide a break from thinking. Also, a lot of the heroines are not as annoying as Bella, so it's not that bad.

I appreciated this book because some of the typic...more

Argh, I wanted to like this book, I really did, but like a lot of YA novels the inital idea and story line isnt enough to keep you interested. You hardly get any insight to Ava's world at all,I never knew if its set in the future or now, it doesn't mention anything to do with the period she lives in. Plus, the lack of description doesn't end there, Claire Farrell could of had a much better book if she'd gone in to detail a lot further, for example how Ava was created; a vampire hybrid is somethi...more

first off, I found this a more realistic take on vampirism, with the portion explaining that vampires couldn't copulate because they're dead. finally! a vampire novel that isn't filled with ridiculous vampire romance and sex. even the mild attraction of the heroine to Peter wasn't nausiating, though interestingly enough I'd like to see an elaboration of the whole "dating the head vampire bitch's assistant" thing. as for the supposed "love triangle" between Peter, Ava and Carl, I didn't see it at...more

This novella doesn't really have enough of a plotline to rehash in a review. There's a vampire/human hybrid named Ava who accidentally imprints or whatever on a guy named Carl and spends the whole book trying to unmake the bond. She has OCD. She has an abusive grandmother. She meets a vampire hunter named Peter.

I have this personal vendetta against books with reviews where people slam the books because they feel like the main female character is weak. To me, there is a big difference between be...more

(2.5 stars)I am not sure how to rate this book. It was definitely not my favorite, mainly because of the way it lacked a spark I guess.. I would even consider two stars. I really felt like the text and dialogue was very plain and way too simple in the explainations. Kind of like, "I went to place A. I left there worried. I sat and calmed myself down. Then I left to go to place B." The plot was ok, I just didn't feel very much depth between the characters. I definitely didn't ever feel an 'urgenc...more

The editing was the only saving grace to the story...or lack there of. There honestly wasn't a story here. It was a chick that's half vamp and is weak, annoying and overall a bore. The story started with a great opening scene that gave it much promise. But that was the extent of the promise. The opening scene pulled the reader in and held it hostage...but not in a good way. I read the entire book, waiting, wanting, longing for something to come of it, and yet it didn't. Honestly, I didn't even b...more

This was a good vamp book. Just the kind of snarky sarcastic humor I love. The characters are really great and I was able to pull an image of what I think they look like.
However I didn't really feel there was a lot of detail. With that said... not having to much detail can be an OK thing. I could focus more on the humor, romance, and the "mystery" that is Ava's life!

Ava is a Hot redheaded, half vamp half human. She does not drink blood, so is constantly thirsty. She deals with this thirst by c...more

I'm guilty again of reading a book solely because of the redheaded cover! Which is very nice, by the way.

My advise, read it if you have absolutely nothing else to read. This is like an emergency supply when you are in the queue or on the train and want to pass the time but have no other book at hand. It's readable, and it's easy, but quite empty.

There is no depth, there is no original plot, more like non-violent, non-blood drinking variation of female Blade, a slightly OCD daywalker and Ebay se...more

A solid vampire read with likable characters and a slightly different take on vampires.

I must admit to not expecting that much from this book since it was a free Kindle ebook (perhaps I'm a tad prejudice, but a lot of self published books are pretty bad), but I was pleasantly surprised. Farrell had a take on vampires that was between totally sexual creatures and complete and utter monsters. My only issue with the vampires is that if vampires are vampires because of the poison in their blood, why...more

I really liked this long novella. Ava, the heroine, is a vampire -- of sorts. She was born of a human mother not 'made' so she is a day walker. She doen't embrace her vampire nature by drinking blood although she struggles with the thirst. Ava knows very little about vampires or what she is other than the thrist. Raised to detest what she is, Ava has no idea of her potential and the dangers her existance held. It seems that vampires can no longer turn humans so the secret of Ava's creation is in...more

The book is about a twenty-five year old woman called Ava Delaney who was born as a human being with vampire poison inside her. She accidentally bonds an innocent man named Carl to her and he is forced to obey her every command. All she wants to do is break the bond and be free of him so she seeks help from her grandmother (who she hasn't talked to in seven years), who then gives her the name of a man called Peter who can help her. The trio go along on their journey into trying to find a way to...more

Vampire stories, literature and folklore, I'm addicted to them. Of course you can't compete with Ann Rice whose books have sold over 100 million copies, expertly written in the genres of metaphysical Gothic fiction, Christian literature and erotica. And, of course she attended San Francisco State University and obtained a B.A. in Political Science in 1964 and an M.A. in Creative Writing in 1972 as I had from Berkeley in 1972. Then there is her Interview with the Vampire. Who doesn't love that fi...more

On Christmas eve I brought the current book I was reading ( Cleopatra's Daughter ) and my "reader" aunt (Her tastes in good books are The House of Night series and Twilight) told me it looked boring and that I needed to read better books like this one. If it wasn't for the fact that I already had this on my 'Once I get my nook' to read list, I probably wouldn't have even bothered.

The book starts out with Ava, our hybrid vamp protagonist, walking the streets at night, and she comes across a vamp...more

For me, Thirst falls into the "it was ok" category. There wasn't anything I hated about the book or the story, but I certainly didn't fall in love with it either. To start with, I didn't feel much a connection to Ava, the main character. There's a lot you can do with a human-vampire hybrid, but Ava came off a little whiny. Instead of "Hey, look at all this cool stuff I can do, maybe I should figure how it all works!", it was a lot more "My life is really hard." Also, I liked the idea of an OCD m...more

Ava, what can I not say about her that isn't a little undertoned. She is a wonderful concept character one that constantly struggles with who and what she is. The way she does not belong to either side but, to herself is even more. The ups and downs she went through as a child only to further be forced to struggle against the two races that created her.

I was pleased with this book at first I was worried that it would be another of the usual overly hyped and even catering to the masses with the...more

Thirst was enjoyable. It was al right. It just didn't stand out for me.

Ava is a half-vampire, and the only one at that. When she by accident binds a human to her, she doesn't know what to do. And know two rivalling vampire clans are fighting to capture her and use her powers. Only Ava is completely unaware of what she can do.

This is pretty much a basic vampire story. The main character is a pretty girl that everyone either wants, or is jealous of. But she's not perfect! She hasn't talked to a hu...more

This book is free on Kindle and Barnes and nobles ebooks.

This book really took by surprise, seriously! The basic summary, main character, female heroine Ava Delaney has lived a hard, complicated life. She isnt' completely human, in fact she tries to live a normal, away from anyone, as possible. Her only family member that she knows of that raised her thought of her as the "something evil" and tries to "cleanse her." Ava lives invisible as possible, so she or others don't get hurt, until she come...more

First let me say, "Thirst" has such a beautiful cover and although you should never judge a book by it's cover, it truly did entice me to read the book. "Thirst" is a modified version of one of my all time favorite movie series, Blade. Ava Delaney was born a daywalker. Her mother was bitten by a vampire while pregnant and died during Ava's birth. Ava's upbringing was shrouded in secret and left to a religious zealot grandmother who never failed to inflict her personal brand of exorcising the bad...more

This book is like that great guy your dating, BUT he's not really doing it for you.... There's no shivers of pleasure when your eyes meet.

He's just that nice guy.

Your friends ask, "How are you and ----?"

You yawn, explaing, "He's a nice guy. He's just not.... THE GUY for me."

This is Thirst.

Thirst and I went out on a few dates. And I'll admit it... I slept with Thirst on the second date (I'm such a floosie!), but I can't even describe the sex to you or even the conversations we had on the date.

I don't remember how long I've had Thirst on my TBR, but I finally dug it out and settled in for a read that I ended up finding pleasantly surprising. I've grown tired of the glut of vampire novels and wasn't sure I'd enjoy another. Thirst was a nice shift from vampire to vampire hybrid with the emphasis on her humanity. You expect her to give in to her desires but you don't want her to, so the tension is well crafted.

The author spins an enjoyable tale even if it is fairly short: or maybe it was...more

This story was...interesting. Vampires for the weak of stomach, I would say. I just finished the story and yet I don't quite know how I feel. I honestly feel it must be the way it's written that bothers me because the story did finally catch my attention and how the book was ended left too many questions.

The story is about Ava, a vampire/human hybrid who lives her life alone and accidently enchants a guy while trying to save him from a regular vampire and her whole world goes to hell. While tryi...more

I promise to be brutally honest with my opinion, but it should not be taken as fact. Any reader should read it for themselves, before they decide if this book has any merit or not. Do not judge this book biased solely on my opinion. If you do, you might miss out on a great read. You never know. It could happen. My review may contain spoilers, but I really strive to be spoiler-free. I downloaded this book for free on Amazon.com. This book was not suggested nor “gifted” to me by the author. I ha...more

I thought this was a pretty good read. It had something a little different than the typical vampire story.

When Ava's fighting with Becca, she ends up using to a hair straightener to 'subdue' her. Okay, so having that in hand, the cord swinging in the air, the prongs end up hitting Becca in the eye hard enough to cause an injury resulting in blood? That doesn't really seem possible to me.

One thing I can't stand when it comes to books/movies or whatever is when usually the main character has a pr...more

A vampire hybrid, strange magical creatures, and a vampire war.

I did not expect to like this book. I did not expect to get past the first few pages. Instead, I ended up reading the entire thing in one night.

Ava is neither human nor vampire. She can move about during the day and survive on regular human food. She also craves blood. When she unexpectedly puts a human she is trying to save in thrall and needs to sever the bond for the good of the human Carl (and herself, as she is afraid she won'...more

Thirst is the first book in the Ava Delaney series and it got off to a great start. Ava is constantly thirsting for blood. She’s a ball of nerves over it. What does she do to combat her thirst? She counts. I found that totally endearing.

Then there was Carl, the man she enthralled. She took care of him. She made sure she didn’t feed off of him and she was protective of him. Unlike some critics, I didn’t see any signs of a love connection there at all. Besides it would have been taking advantage o...more

After i read the first chapters i was so excited that i found a new vampire book that was just oh-so-awesome without being Twilightish. But then something happened and the story lost focus and the characters didn't develop as much as i expected them to. Ava had two ore three flashbacks from her childhood and that's it. We don't really get to see what sets her off.

And the love triangle... was it me, or there was no triangle? She has the poor guy who's name i already forgot as a puppy and she did...more
