Starting off a bit slowly, The Vyne won't grab your attention immediately. It starts off in a bit of a cliche' setting; a harbor village where main character, Asher Meadows, lives alone with his drunken father. But this book quickly picks up pace and will soon have you enthralled in it's sheer awesomeness. Daniel Walls brings components into this story that make it enjoyably complex and unlike any book I've read in quite a while. You think that this is just gonna be some other sixteenth century b...more
Life's too short to read a book you're not 100% enjoying. That's basically my philosophy. I just have too many books to waste my time on one that I feel is not going to be up to snuff. Unfortunately, this has happened with The Vyne. I usually try to forge ahead if, and only if, a book is a First Reads win (or a library thing win), but then there comes a point where you have to put a book down if you start thinking of what chores you need to be doing (and considering I'm very much anti-chores, th...more
It took me several days to get into the book. It starts out slow and took more work than enjoyment in the beginning. Between the introduction of numerous characters and vast information, being shuffled throughout various scenes, my head was spinning through the first hundred pages. Once the story, FINALLY, began to unfold and I had grasped hold of it, I found myself enjoying the book.

Why I read this: It looked like an interesting new YA steampunk novel, a subgenre that I've really been getting into lately.
Plot: Probably the most solid part of the book was the plot. There's a slew of characters you follow throughout the book, but overall it is a love story with the backdrop of a steampunk world that has just been taken over by a man who has his army of cloned forces that hold little human emotion. And it's mainly about a boy named Ash who has special powers, one that finds a...more

The Vyne is a little bit adventure, a little bit steampunk, which is what sparked my curiosity and made me want to read the book. The Vyne has a lot of things going on within it's pages. It's a love story wrapped around one of self-discovery, as the main character Ash learns more about his abilities, and the things he is able to do, mixed in with a steampunk theme with the army of clones who are both human like and not human like at the same time.

The Vyne mixes adventure, romance and a fantastic villain to create a solid YA steampunk-fantasy novel.
What I liked most about The Vyne was how character rich the story was. Despite being the villain, I really like the character of Count LePrey. He believed in his ideals and convictions so much that he wasn't able to see the difference between right and wrong. He was willing to do anything to accomplish his means, even killing.

Fantasy doesn’t tend to be my cup of tea but the premise for The Vyne sounded really interesting, plus it was mixed with steampunk which I really like. After having read this book I won’t go so far as to say that fantasy has now become my cup of tea but I may now be a little more open to the genre.

Ash a young man hiding who he really is and what he can do from those around him, while ducking the blows of his sometimes brutal father. Scar is a girl with no memories of her past, hunted by those who seek what she knows. When these two unlikely teens meet, the whole world will be seeking them.
The Vyne: Mystery of the Hiddne Ember is a complex work of fiction. It has elements of historical fiction, steampunk, fantasy, and you can even throw in some pirates. It seems like Walls threw in the...more
For those of you who don't often read Steampunk/Fantasy novels, let me tell you something outright. Before this review even begins. Characters are numerous, and if you are a character heavy reader, chances are you won't really connect with them. You might enjoy a character, or think they are interesting, but it's really unlikely you'll ever get to know so much about a character that you know them. I guess. I mean as much as you would get to know them in say, a Contemporary read. Unless there are...more
This book brought many elements we read in different books. You had fantasy, steampunk and romance. You can say that the whole book is busy. There is so much happening that you do get lost at times. I did enjoy the parts I truly understood that I wasn't overwhelm with. This book I believe will be liked by the older crowd and even guys.

So many good book to read! Looks interesting.
I did not finish this book. I got up to page 214. I just couldn't stand it any more. it was badly written. It felt like the author just included everything he thought was cool in it. that meant it felt like a big disjointed mess. I never got sucked into the world. I never cared about the characters. I could not come to finish this.
I see this story being made into an animated film and/or video game. The physical descriptions of the characters and their surroundings are very vivid and it has many thrilling actions sequences.
