My favorite of this series. I found myself identifying pretty strongly with Allelulia (the main character)* because I feel that I would probably react in the same way to similar circumstances. And Caleb? Nerdy engineer love.

All that aside, this series does have many of the same tropes as romance novels, though they also have some of the same traits are classic sci-fi fantasy, such as examining parts of our culture (in this case, technology and war and how they shape society). The More...

A good read, but not a great read. Jovah's Angel picks up 150 years after the events in Archangel. It follows the stories of two angels, Delilah, the self-centered Archangel who loses her ability to fly and her job in a violent storm, and Alleluia, the quiet, mousy angel who is chosen next by Jovah to become Archangel. Alleya, as she is called, discovers that the god Jovah, whom the entire land worships as the one god, is really a starship in orbit over the planet. Jovah manipulates the weath More...

"And might I live long enough to see the world yet again as a place completely different, through eyes that see another truth not yet revealed?"

What I liked:
Aleya and Caleb
The myriad discussions and quotes I could grab here and there and sink into
The exploration of innocence, faith, truth and "rightness"
The moral ambiguity that that exploration led me to consider

What I didn't like:
Delilah. I couldn't like her. I didn't fin More...

After my review of Jenna Starborn I though I'd tell about what I think is Shinn's best book. Jovah's Angel has it all: a well written, thought provoking story, a believable, intriguing setting and great characters. Although this is the second book in a trilogy, I would recommend reading this one first as the cover blurb of the first book 'Archangel' spoils a lot of the fun of this book. Although the above story focuses on Alleluia/Alleya, one of the other lead characters is Caleb, a cynical inve More...

Yay, I noticed this tidbit while reading the novel too! I kept thinking to myself that it was very interesting that there was no villain to this story. The novel revolves around complex characters, More...

All is not well in Samaria... Great storms are sweeping the land, the deserts flood, and the skies rain down death and destruction. As they have always, the people turn to the angels for help. Yet even their splendid voices, raised in supplication, cannot seem to reach the god Jovah...
Then, the proud and beautiful Archangel Delilah falls victim to the rage of the wind, as she is torn from the sky, her wing broken. She can no longer soar in the heavens, guiding and guarding those below. She More...

Wonderful! This sequel to "Archangel," brought the already phenonal world-building to the next logical level. The characters were well drawn and a joy to follow as they battled problems that threatened their very world.

I thought "Archangel" was only ok -- great world-building but a not so great character and a decent but predictable plot. Something about it did resonate though...something told me to keep reading and I am so glad I did. I can't wait to read more in More...

I don't know what it is about the whold angel and human thing that I like so much. Anyway, this series could be taken a little offensively since bible names are used consistently, but it is a different place and time. In the second book of this series the archangel is injured so that she can no longer fly and another angel must take her place. Some accept the new archangel and some do not, which isn't helped by the fact that the new archangel doesn't want to be one. Then there is also the proble More...

I rated this as two stars because I felt it was Book 1 with different characters. There were some things different obviously but after reading the first book this one was very predictable. Admittedly there were some surprises that were nice but not enough to keep me engrossed in the book. I felt like I had to force myself to finish this book unlike the first which held my attention.

The ending is interesting and how the characters deal with their new found knowledge. They pose s More...

Aha! I actually enjoyed this book a lot more than I did Archangel, because finally things made sense. I am very like Caleb in the book in needing to know why things worked they way they did.

This book made the crossover from fantasy to sci-fi very easily and still retained the wonder of the story. I enjoyed the Alleluia character very much, more so almost than Rachel from Archangel.

The only bad part about this book was it took 2 months of waiting for the library's inte More...

Ha! I KNEW it. I figured out what Samaria's god really is....but I'd better not spoil it. I think I figured it out back in ARCHANGEL. Still, Sharon Shinn's angel books are a real pleasure. I identified most with Alleluia, the reluctant Archangel in this book. I love how singing is more than just a performance act -- it has a purpose -- for the angels. This book brought up the highly appropriate tension between industrialization and non-technical society. And really turned up the heat whe More...

Jovah has as stopped listening to the angels prayers and the weather promises disaster across Samaria, angering the people. The archangel has fallen and has now distanced herself to the company of 2 engineers in Luminaux. And the new archangel must now find a way to reach Jovah, stop the destructive weather, find her Angelico and appease the people.

Less epic than the first book with its exploding mountains, but I liked the characters more. Caleb is so sweet and enthusiastic. Alleya i More...

This is the second in Shinn's archangel series. It was well written, although the premise of this book is that Jovah (the deity of Samaria, and a seemingly abreviated version of Jehovah)is actually the name of a space ship orbiting the planet. It turns out that centuries past, a people left their home planet, disgusted with the world that they knew, bliaming much of the evil they had known on technology. They left for a brave new world, abandoned technology, leaving enough set up to serve as wea More...

I think I like the series more now than I did after the first novel in this series, Archangel. Predictably, that may be because the protagonists included two women who did not feel like they were merely interested in their romantic relationships. Rather they were the angels, the entities with greater power in the relationships. Of course, this book did, predictably, require the men to rescue them to some degree, but it did not feel as unbalanced as the relationship within Archangel did. This is More...

On the planet Samaria the Angels pray to the God Jovah to answer the needs and wants of the people. If they need medicine, the angels pray and medicine arrives. If they need grain, the angels pray and grains arrive. If the weather is violent, the angels pray and the weather subsides.

Only lately it seems the Jovah hasn't been hearing the angels. Storms have raging over Samaria leaving flood and terrible conditions in it's wake. The Archangel Delilah, flying carelessly during on More...

Why is it, when either re-imaging earth’s history or writing about humanity’s would-be future, the characters make the same mistakes we make in our present or our near past:pollution, slave labor, child labor, capitalism etc. Because a true utopia would be boring to read about, no doubt.

I liked this book alright. It took me a while to get into it. It is a romance really wrapped up in a science fiction/fantasy package. I cheated a bit and wiki-ed the first book in the series, "A More...

When I finished Archangel I had to continue with this one. I want to live in Sharon Shinn's Samaria. This book brings up some issues about morality and religion which I find intriguing and thought-provoking beyond the typical escapist fantasy.

While I enjoyed Archangel more, this book shared a bit more of the background of Samaria, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I also liked how Alleluia overcame her struggle with a faith that was... challenged. Overall, a good read, and a good follow-up to the 1st book in the series. I'm getting ready to start The Alleluia files here shortly, and I'm excited to see where Shinn will take us next.

I'm glad it wasn't quite as focused on romance as the first book in this world, but it was still annoying. I really wanted to see more of the world, its inhabitants, and its politics, and instead I got a really obvious plot (I predicted the ending before it was halfway through) with only somewhat interesting characters. I think I prefer the short stories in this world to the full length books.

I loved the Samaria books. Jovah's Angel is about the same world but with new characters. Character's from other books are mentioned, but she moves to different parts of the land and introduces you to their life. This book is about Allelujah who becomes Archangel when the the chosen Archangel is injured. I really enjoyed it.

Despite normally avoiding futuristic fantasy and/or angel stories, this trilogy presents a future based around a god that isn't...yet the choices Alleluia makes are those that her society needs to grow. It's a good book for thinking about the role of religion and spirituality and belief (none of which are the same thign).

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the first one. It took place in the same country, but about 150 years later. It revealed a lot more about "Jovah". I was glad that even though their "God" was a computer, it still left open the possibility that there was another God who was a real, loving being over everyone.

I thought this book was just a little slow, it was hard to hold my interest. The story itself is fine. I was kind of hoping that it continued with the characters from the first book, but instead it takes place hundereds of years later. I don't know if I will continue to read the series.

Second in a series that takes place more than a 100 years after the first one which is a bit disappointing, and follows a similar plot line to the first which makes it a little repetitious. Still some new characters and a few surprises with good writing make it an enjoyable read.

I really liked the flow and poetic interpretations of this book. It wasn't as good as Archangel though... It just didn't work for me to see the machinery and it's consequences appearing on an otherwise wonderful world, however the philosophy behind the god figure was spot on.

My least favorite of all of Sharon Shinn's books. How can you fall in love with someone who doesn't respect your career, your purpose, your identity and your entire belief system? Implausible love story. Only read if you're absolutely fascinated by the Samaria series.

In my opinion, this was much better than the first in the series. It still had all the good things that I liked from the previous book, but without most of my complaints. The characters in the first book were compelling but at times drove me nuts. It was the world that had me wanting to read the sequel. And it was definitely an improvement, even though at times one of the lead characters seems almost too perfect. It switched back and forth on POV's like the first book but it seemed like it was b More...

I would give this 4.5 or a little higher. I really enjoyed it. A suspicion I had from Archangel was confirmed, the love story was sweet, the discussion of the effect of new technology on a civilization was intelligent. I look forward to reading more in the series.
