For a first attempt at fiction writing, Lee Strobel did a fantastic job. The characters are well developed and his knowledge of Chicago politics shines through. He writes about something he is very familiar with as he weaves a tale of deceit and corruption. He is a former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune with a journalism degree from the University of Missouri, and he has even taught First Amendment Law. Many people live under the delusion that they can control everything and manipulate the f...more
A bookie meets his end at the hands of the no-nonsense Mafia mobster, Nick Moretti. That event will foster a series of conversations and illegal actions that focus on how not to get caught and have one's future ruined. A typical scenario? Well, this one's got a bit of a different twist to it.

Absolutely different. Not in a bad way, mind you. Lee Strobel is an amazing author when he is writing his Case books. I love them. My dad has a whole collection of them, that I love to break into from time to time. They are stunning and amazing. But, when he writes fiction, well....let's just say that while his writing is not terrible, it's certainly not as good as I hoped it would be.
With that being said, The Ambition's plot is awesome. The way the story line had to flow, with mobs, and megach...more

Start with a murder case being brought to trial along with a corrupt judge. Then toss in a cynical reporter looking for a big story that might put him back in contention for a Pulitzer; and just to give the story an added twist fold in a disillusioned Evangelical pastor who is now hungry for more power and you will have most all of the ingredients for the intricate suspense thriller THE AMBITION penned by the New York Times best selling author Lee Strobel.

Strobel is a new author for me. I noticed it on netGalley and thought why not? It sounded intriguing. Boy was I glad I read it. This was a very solid read. I always enjoy reading books that have many plot lines going within the main story, and several different main characters. I think it's really cool how an author is able to transition from character to character, writing each story/situation separately, and then finding a way to link them all together in the end. I believe it takes enormous t...more

There's nothing like a good mafia/mob story! I enjoyed both the storyline and the characters. The book was an easy read and I actually found myself wishing the book had more details. I would have enjoyed a few hundred more pages. The storyline went back and forth between characters quickly which made it a little hard to get the characters straight in my head at the beginning. As the book came to a close, the story moved much faster and I would have liked more depth. There were some characters an...more
Three stars is kind of generous given my problems with the book. On the one hand, it did hold my interest for the most part, but in the end, it just didn't have the payoff. Here are some of my other issues: 1.) I felt like over half the book was just "set-up" - with very little action and movement of the story. 2.) My own fault, I guess, for not reading the author bio., but I did feel a bit ripped off with the Christian-focused themes and especially the ending. It's like walking into a strip clu...more
Lee Strobel, former atheist-turned-Christian, best known for the chart-topping, nonfiction “Case” series on faith, belief and Christianity, moves into the fiction arena with “The Ambition,” an edgy debut mystery. He draws on years of real-life experience as an investigative reporter for The Chicago Tribune to write an insider tale of political greed, corruption, gambling addiction and payola. The book opens with a mob hit on an unsuspecting bookie.

I received a copy of Lee Strobel's fiction book The Ambition for review. I did not know about this author so I was not aware that he wrote non fiction christian books.
This first novel is full of colorful characters, including a corrupt judge, a few Chicago mobsters, and an Evanglical pastor with political aspirations. The main character is a reporter trying to get the big story, one that will help him keep his job and advance his career. There are a few different side stories that are all pulled...more

The Ambition brings forth a very interesting premise, what if a very prominent preacher did step into a political office. But that is not the only thing going on in this novel. No, for a short novel, there is a lot going on. There is a romance between an atheist and a budding Christian that goes to the church of the prominent pastor. The atheist is a reporter who is trying to get a major story to save his job and thinks this prominent pastor might be that story. There is also a crooked judge, a...more
After a slow start, this book flew by. Stroebel gives his story a ring of authenticity with his behind-the-scenes details about the newsroom and the courts, as well as a bit of Chicago color. I would have enjoyed it more if I cared more about the characters. I suppose the theme of the story is the pull of politics v. religion, expressed most clearly in this quote from one of the characters making the case for faith: "...the greatest experience in the world -- [is] to be the conduit through which...more
I know Lee Strobel as the journalist who investigated faith and came out with best-sellers The Case for Christ, The Case for Faith, and The Case for a Creator. A non-fiction heavyweight, I never thought he’d cross over to fiction.
But with his first major novel, he just made a case for suspense.
The Ambition is a solid suspense thriller: intricate plot, fast-paced narrative. It sets the stage a bit slow, but works up to a gripping climax that resolves (or doesn’t—you decide) without the contrived...more

Lee Strobel’s non fiction books – The Case for Christ, The Case for the Creator and others have helped me and many others know how to share the Gospel with seekers and helped seekers/unbelievers come to Christ. I eagerly ordered his first novel, The Ambition, thinking this could reach seekers or even unbelievers more easily. I was mistaken.
However, it is a well written, action packed tale of intrigue, corruption, and ambition reminiscent of John Grisham’s books. The story involves a mega- churc...more

I've read and enjoyed many (possibly all) of Lee Strobel's Christian apologetics books, so when I saw that he had written a novel, I was intrigued. This book did not disappoint. I found the characters engaging, and their flaws believable. Also, the book told the story, from an obviously Christian viewpoint, and yet,(view spoiler)...more

The Ambition: A Novel by Lee Strobel is one of the reasons why I love Christian fiction. Not only that, it is way better than other secular fiction books in this genre. Lee Strobel writes a novel woven with political intrigue and deceit driven by ambition and greed.
What makes it the better fiction compared to fiction novels of the same genre are the Christian characters of this story. When I was younger, I used to wonder what a good book will be like if written from a Christian’s point of view -...more

Filled with scandal, corruption, murder and a couple of miracles, The Ambition is definitely a page-turner. Author Lee Strobel puts everything he's got into this first novel that won't disappoint his fans. He has taken his experience in law, journalism and religion to produce quite an entertaining tale. Strobel is a best selling author of Christian non-ficion. His Case books are very popular, though I have not read or heard of them before reading The Ambition. The Ambition by Lee Strobel is the best-selling journalist's first novel. Several stories of high-powered men in Chicago come together in a climactic way. The Bugatti brothers are known for their control of the Chicago mafia and their business as cut-throat loan sharks. Tommy O'Sullivan has coasted through much of his life on his last name until a gambling addiction puts him deep in debt to the Bugattis and he participates in a bribe that will change the city forever. A crooked judge, cynical newspaper reporter, and a big time pastor turning political candidate are just a few of the characters that you will find in Lee Strobel’s debut fiction suspense novel The Ambition: A Novel. The characters are woven into a fascinating story where the mob plays into the judicial corruption of a case. With a pay off to a certain judge the system was able to be manipulated so that cases could be steered toward a certain judge who would get them off. Also woven in to the sto...more
A drama/thriller novel written by a megachurch pastor! Its a "good read" in the sense that its easy to read, has a strong moving plot, and weird, weird, weird---it has Christian characters who act with integrity! It will throw you for a loop. I found myself caught between cynicism and gratitude for that. It was certainly a fresh narrative in the context of my readings.
You could say they are stock characters--the mob villains especially--but it made for some good late-night reading.

I loved Strobel's "Case" books so when he wrote a novel I decided to check it out, even though Christian fiction can be stereo-typically mundane. (just my opinion) This book is anything but mundane. There are so many characters, all well developed, and the way their stories all intertwine is genius. This book kept me guessing the whole time, I couldn't figure out who were the bad guys and who were the good guys. I hope Strobel doesn't hang up his novel-writing hat! Can't wait for another one!
I tripped over this in my library search for new mysteries/thrillers in audio books. I never heard of the author but love the reader (Scott Brick) so I gave it a whirl. And I enjoyed it enormously. Good characters, good story - what more do I need. An evangelist and a judge are contenders to fill a Senate term abandoned by the guy elected. A reporter is thrown into the mix. The story hangs together with all the needed credibility.

Good first novel. You can tell - stylistically - that Strobel has a journalism/non-fiction background; I hope he can refine his fictional voice.
On some level, it's refreshing to have Christian lifestyle included in a novel. However, at some points it gets a bit heavy-handed and kind of slows the progress of the plot. The novel would be more compelling without these (as I call them) "in defense of the mega-chuch" sections, but it's ultimately a fun, quick read.

I was pleasantly surprised reading Ambition. Yes, it is Christian fiction, but it reads like the tough mafia story it is. There are obvious stereotypes of the mafia, journalists, and legal types. A lot of the action was predictable, but there were a couple of surprises that made me think, "Wow!" Like a couple of other reviewers, I felt that it ended too soon. Maybe there is a sequel in the works? Overall, a good book. I'd read more from this author.
Did not know this was a Christian oriented book. Frankly, I did not find the Christians in the book at all appealing. They did not display the virtues of Christ in any meaningful way. They were judgmental and those who thought differently than themselves. I was not rooting for them, and the book was clearly written so that I would. Not a good read.
This book wasn't bad for Christian fiction, which I generally find to be poorly written. It is a very quick read. The characters are not fleshed out at all, so I didn't really care what happened to any of them. But the plot intrigued me and was easy to follow. It takes place in Chicago, which was fun, especially because there are so many references to the Cubs!
The characters are very well developed and each one seemed as if he or she could be real. The plot seems real as well and, as they say, could be "ripped from the headlines." The end was unexpected and extremely satisfying. When I had about 50 pages to go I couldn't believe he was going to be able to wrap everything up so quickly, but he did and it was fantastic.
I really like Lee Strobel's A Case for Christ and A Case for Faith, so I picked this up to see how his fiction would be. It was slow getting started. Strobel introduces a lot of characters very quickly, and I found myself a little lost in the beginning. However, once I became engaged with the characters, the book moved along pretty quickly.
