Well, if you know me or follow my posts at all, you have probably picked up on the fact that I am a very busy woman with a lot on her plate.

I commute at least an hour one way most days to my full-time job (and then back again). I have a young son (who will be turning 6 soon). I am the wife of a hardworking man. Of course there are plenty of details I left out in that little life summary of mine, but you get the point.

I truly am a woman who lives "in a do-it-all world." And I am trying to thrive in it, with God's help.

So, when I heard Shaunti Feldhahn on the radio on FamilyLife Today talking with the hosts about her new book and study, The Life Ready Woman, I was completely intrigued. She described my life. She described my emotions. My struggles. My desires. She described me.

And, being a former Wall Street analyst as well as a current national speaker and syndicated news columnist, Shaunti knows what it's like to live in today's woman's world. Her research studies and writing along with that of Robert Lewis' truly get to the heart of what women today need to hear. They hit right where we need encouragement and tangible direction.

Shaunti and Robert don't just speak to women like me, but they specifically address, encourage, and guide all types of women in all seasons of life. Additionally, Life Ready Woman is just a portion of a larger vision and project called LifeReady which reaches far beyond female audiences. If Life Ready Woman is any indication, I would have to say that this LifeReady project truly will impact people, marriages, and families in a mighty way for the ultimate glory of our Lord.

I'm not normally one to read non-fiction books, but I have been trying to expand my reading. Ok, well, not just that, but I have been trying to be a better wife, mom, and person. I appreciated the concept of this book and I enjoyed the overall theme and aim. It was easy to understand and the message flowed together through each chapter. I also appreciated the wisdom and experience that Shaunti and Robert brought to this book. There were some great examples and neat ways of presenting ideas in this book.

This book takes a Biblical viewpoint of how the modern woman can lead the best life she can attain while still following the guidelines of the Bible and living up to her personal potential. It uses the personal examples of the two authors, as well as the examples of numerous others that these two have interacted with over the course of writing the book. A systematic approach is taken to break down the history, statistics, and advantages of the modern woman before studiously approaching the Bibli...more This book takes a Biblical viewpoint of how the modern woman can lead the best life she can attain while still following the guidelines of the Bible and living up to her personal potential. It uses the personal examples of the two authors, as well as the examples of numerous others that these two have interacted with over the course of writing the book. A systematic approach is taken to break down the history, statistics, and advantages of the modern woman before studiously approaching the Biblical model of the female.
One of the main focuses of the book is the Biblical mandate to "be fruitful and multiply" and how modern culture has both minimized and scorned this. The authors also focus on the differences between males and females, as well as their different purposes in life. Marriage is also a central theme in the book, with the authors providing lots of advice, as well as suggestions to study other resources, in order to find a husband and maintain a healthy marriage.
To stress certain points throughout the book, the authors provide a visual illustration of the concepts discussed. They summarize the lessons taught in certain sections in a "Wise Steps" box, and they fill the book with sections that invite the reader to journal his own thoughts according to a certain topic.
What I found the most interesting about the book was how the authors broke down the multiple purposes of any woman into three categories: our purpose as humans (Core Callings), our purpose as women (Feminine Callings), and our purpose as unique individuals (Personal Callings). Each of these are further broken down, with the Core Callings having the most emphasis throughout the book: Leave and Cleave, Be Fruitful and Multiply, and Subdue and Rule.
I had a difficult time getting through this book, partly because I felt that some of the information provided simply did not apply to me and I did not find it particularly useful. I did agree with most of what the authors interpreted from Biblical scriptures, though I disliked the broad usage of many different Biblical translations. As with any Biblically-based self-help book, the Bible should be the first source and the book should be secondary. I also felt that Feldhahn used the book somewhat as a self-promotional tool, since she often refers to her previously-written book, For Women Only: What You Need to Know about the Inner Lives of Men.
All the same, I appreciated the Biblical perspective and the support of marriage-minded women and stay-at-home moms. There is much wisdom in the pages of this book.(less)

Work, kids, play, life, husband, family, self, God, women balance all of them and yet how do we do it? What do we do when we get tired? How do we balance it all and yet live this life well? The Life Ready Woman is a wonderful book that speaks to women no matter what or how much is on their to-do list. Whether you are a stay at home mom, a work at home mom, or a mom who works outside of the home this book is a must read.

So, what exactly is a Life Ready Woman? She is a woman who knows who she is in God's eyes and follows His calling for her life. She doesn't try to do impress anyone other than her Creator. Whether He has called her to be a world traveler, a jet-setting corporate executive, a stay-at-home mom, or a single, unmarried woman, a Life Ready Woman embraces her calling and lives life to its full, because she knows who she is called to be.

But the bigger question is, in my mind, how do we know who God has called us to be? Isn't this one of life's greatest questions? In the first half of the book, the authors explore three types of callings, that they declare are the biblical road map to being a Life Ready Woman:
1. Core Callings - Our callings as humans designed in God's image
2. Feminine Callings - Our callings as women
3. Personal Callings - Our callings as individuals

I found these sections to be a very worthwhile read. They really made me think about my life and design as a human being first (Core Calling), then as a woman (Feminine Calling), and finally as a unique individual (Personal Calling). Have you ever thought about why you are in the body you are in? God made you female for a reason! There are some really enlightening and thought-provoking topics in this section centered around the three callings. I am looking forward to going back and re-reading these sections and soaking them in.

In the second half of the book, I was actually tempted to skip through parts of it, because I didn't feel like it pertained to me. I'm glad I didn't because I would have missed out on some very valuable information. The authors explore how we are to get the best out of each season of our life (i.e. single, single but engaged, newly married, married with preschoolers, married with grade-schoolers, married empty-nester, late-in-life widow, glorified saint) and the steps we should take during each season in order to live out our biblical road map.

This book is definitely worth the time spent reading it. There is a lot of information to digest and I think I need to go back and re-read it again to get a more full understanding of all the material presented by the authors. There is one tiny thing that annoyed me in this book, though. Since there are two authors and the book is written in the first person, I found the narrative presentation to be very clumsy. When Shaunti would be writing, her section would start something like: "When I (Shaunti) ..." or "I (Shaunti)..." When Robert would be writing a specific part, the section would start in a similar fashion: "I (Robert)..." or "This happened when I (Robert)..." It got incredibly annoying to read a book in this fashion. I think it could have been presented in a different way, such as in the third person.

In any case, I would recommend this book to any woman who is trying to do-it-all and feeling like she is barely keeping her head above water. This book will definitely put your life back into perspective and make you remember that you are God's child and He has plans for your life that are greater than any plans you could ever dream of!

Really enjoyed this book. Pastor and author teamed up to provide practical advice for women today. Gave some overarching themes that they feel apply to all women, but provide freedom on how each women needs to implement them. Included real life examples, and advice for different seasons of life. With all the choices afforded women these days, it was a nice book to read to find some help in boiling down how to make best choices.

This book was easy to read and follow, and the information in it is so good for women today. I really liked how the authors described the different seasons of a woman’s life and how best to live life to the fullest and bring glory to God during each one. Since I am in the ‘Married with Preschoolers’ phase of life, I was very encouraged by what was said in that section.

I don't know how I feel about this book. The first half was rough, but the second half was better. On some pages I really liked what was being said, and on other pages I felt quite differently. I was hoping reading/discussing the book would clarify my vision/mission for my current season of life.

I did appreciate her acknowledgements that every woman's life looks different.

For now, I will put this book on my shelf and perhaps read it again at a later date...

I was really excited to read this book, but it wasn't what I was hoping for. I felt like it spent a lot of time suggesting ways that one might end up regretting one's current life choices, and I'd usually feel pretty discouraged and a little angry after reading a section. (When really, I have a healthy level of peace and commitment to my current way of life). I ended up stopping about halfway through, so perhaps it gets better, but it wasn't for me.
