Then I told Lon the first honest thing that came to mind.

"I've kissed an earthbound but I've never kissed a man with a mustache."

Wow! This book cast a spell on me that had me glued from the first page. Kindling The Moon was a fantastic start to a new Urban Fantasy series with plenty of romance and sexual tension to satisfy us Paranormal Romance lovers as well. This unique and imaginative world built by Jenn Bennett is so magically constructed that its like nothing I've ever read before. Arcad...more

Holiday season is Urban Fantasy season for me (don't know what that says about me but...) Yay! New series. Probably 3.5? Yeah I'll say 3.5 stars. Pretty into it DESPITE it's male lead having my least favorite descriptor of all time: blonde mustache. Whyyyyyyy. (And the insistence on calling it a mustache when more facial hair was involved on the chin too. Total record scratch every time. My brain automatically went James Franco pornstache when it was actually more Johnny Depp facial hair. (Like...more

New authors have it tough and that's the plain hard fact, not only do they have to bring something fresh and new to the table, but in a growing genre like UF, you gotta bring in your top gun and Jenn Bennett brings it ten-fold with flags waving and gun blazing with Kindling the Moon.
I was happily surprised in how much I loved and enjoyed this book, the pace and story were very easy to follow along with a great world building and most of all LON! RAWR!

In UF you want the perfect balance in yo...more

Wow! I've read two books within a couple weeks of each other that I feel compelled to give 5 stars. That almost NEVER happens.

Arcadia Bell is a magician - a very powerful magician. But as her regular job, she is partial owner of a bar. She uses her potions and binding spells to break up bar fights and to keep the peace with her Earthbound demon patrons. It's a pretty nice life. She has a house, a couple of friends, a job and super wicked magic powers. She also has a very deep and dark secret sh...more

This book **completely** surprised me. My friend let me read an e-book advanced copy on a recent flight from London. The premise was interesting enough and I had seven hours to kill. I didn't even know if I would finish or not. But somewhere after the first few chapters I got completely sucked into this world and poof, there went my flight.

The world building is so different from all the usual urban fantasy stereotypes. Forget the detectives and paranormal hunters, forget the gun fights and half...more

Kindling the Moon is the first book in Jenn Bennett’s Arcadia Bell series. There was a little bit of buzz surrounding this book a little while back. I saw the cover and thought “wow, stunning colors” and read the blurb. It sounded pretty interesting. So on a whim, I requested it. I was happy when the delivery man arrived at my door with it and was even more excited when I started reading it because it was a good read from the very beginning.

Second time's the charm!

I originally started Kindling the Moon several months ago, but only made it about 15% of the way through before setting it aside in favor of other books that stole my attention. Thankfully, I was smart enough to keep it in my TBR pile, and boy, am I glad I did, because Kindling the Moon turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable read.

The book was a bit slow to get off the groun...more

Kindling the Moon has been on my radar for months now, after it stormed the blog world, getting tons of praise from reviewers I trust. So why did I put off reading it? The amazon blurb for one thing – Magician (are we talking cape and rabbits in hats here?) investigates murders with sex-spell specialist? Blarg. This blurb doesn’t come close to doing the book justice. Then there’s the description of the male lead - Lon. I’m not proud to say one of my reasons for avoiding this novel was the descri...more

KINDLING THE MOON surprised the hell out of me. I honestly didn't really know what to expect, but for one thing I did not expect to immediately fall in love with the pure brilliance of it. This was an excellent start to a series and what a surprising ending that was.

Arcadia Bell was a heroine that I loved from the get go. Cady was very likable and funny at times. And she's one of those girls that you would love to have a girls night out with. Cady is most definitely fun and loving. And with a gr...more

Seven years ago, Arcadia “Cady” Bell’s occultist parents were accused of four murders. They faked their deaths and Cady’s, and the family went into hiding: the parents together, Cady separately. Now, Cady co-owns and tends bar at the Tambuku Tiki Lounge, which caters to both human and demon patrons. Then, when the media discovers her parents are still alive, the rival magical lodge Luxe demands that either they or Cady pay the price for the murders. Cady sets out to prove her parents’ innocence...more

Sometimes you should judge a book by its cover!

Arcadia "Cady" Bell is a free spirited young woman and who has been living under a different identity for seven years, starting a new life as a bar owner/bartender for a "demon friendly" establishment for Earthbounds (demons who are mostly human living on Earth). Arcadia is a powerful magician or mage, who has yet to realize the extent of her powers. When her past comes back...more

Kindling the Moon is a new entry on the UF scene and a welcome one. Unlike so many others, it is competently written, has an original setup, and has a daring romance.

The heroine, Cady, is a magician and her magic is both ritual and personal. "Doing" magic is a matter of capturing energy, "kindling" it as a channeling act of will, and then releasing it into the proper sigil or sign, sometimes with an accompanying incantation. She has a small group of sigils embedded in her arm that she can do in...more

For the love of things that go bump in the night, this book was FABULOUS! It was the perfect blend of action, intrigue, tension and the supernatural. I loved the worldbuilding. Loved it to pieces! I never went into informational overload as the world was shaped and I think the elements Jenn Bennett created came together wonderfully. I literally got nothing done today because I couldn't put this book down. The phone would ring and I was mighty tempted to ignore it so I could spend just a little l...more

This is the first installment in the 'Arcadia Bell' series by Jenn Bennett and what a book it was!
I was bored and happened to stumble upon this novel a few days ago. Once I opened it, I was hooked.

Arcadia (Cady) is a magician with a past. She's the daughter of the notorious eledged serial killers, Enola and Alexander Duval and has been hiding out for seven years to forget her past life.
But the past always come back. And this time it's back to bite her in the a**.

I was in a Urban Fantasy rutt as...more

Imagine you were sitting in an alfresco cafe setting, the sun is warm and the ambiance is lively. Your perfect cup of coffee comes and it smells heavenly but after the first sip, you realize it's not what it seems. What's this you're feeling? That's right, frustration. It could have been good.

That's right. I was so frustrated out of my mind. The premise started out fine, it was nice seeing the female lead tend a bar and go head to head with angry patrons. Everything was nice and dandy until abou...more

She has been using her “Arcadia” alias and has been in hiding for seven years, after her parents were charged with the deaths of three rival occultists, then faked their deaths. This is one of just 3 debut books that I've given 5* to this year. The others were Darynda Jones First Grave and Ben Aaronovitch Rivers of London
3, 5* debuts in 8 months is unusual enough - but this was definitely ahead by a hair. It was bloody awesome and it kept me up til 4am. Even though my eyes were glazing with exhaustion I simply could not put it down and I cried for Cady .... and I do not normally cry for anything less than ill-treated kittens!

I think there are enough reviews covering the...more

I found this to be a riveting and highly swashbuckling read with great characters, and a magical storyline that took me off the beaten UF path. I thought the worldbuilding and the engineering of the magical workings was just wonderful, too.

Then there’s the single father hero who has absolutely great chemistry with our intrepid heroine - I really enjoyed him! There is also a fabulous frenemies storyline that I found to be understatedly hilarious. Love that frenemies bit! And of course, a fine an...more

I won a copy of this book in a blog giveaway so it wasn’t originally on my wishlist but I’m glad that it ended up in my TBR pile. At first the story reminded me of Linda Wisdom’s Demons series but not for long. Kindling the Moon branches out and does its own thing which results in a plot line that doesn’t quit, charismatic characters and an out of left field ending. And, Jenn Bennett is just getting warmed up! The first installment of a series is always tricky business bu...more

I really, really enjoyed this book. So much, in fact, that I’m somewhat lamenting I found it right away after it was released instead of discovering the series a few years from now when I would have four or five books to devour in one go. The world managed to put a slightly different twist on elements that we’ve seen in multiple novels such as mages and demons, giving them a refreshing take that makes them seem shiny and new. Additionally, the background story works great with the world, both of...more

Arcadia Bell is a bar owner with a big secret that is about to surface. Seven years ago her parents were accused of murdering three leaders of magical orders. So all three faked their deaths and went into hiding. They split up to be less noticeable and Arcadia forged a life for herself. Now her parents have been spotted and The Luxe Order (one of the more powerful orders) is trying to find them. Arcadia wants to help prove their innocence so goes about finding the demon that was known to be at t...more

This is a really strong beginning of the new series. Original setting, good, kind sense of humour, easy to love main characters.

This book wasn't as explosive as I thought it would be, but it built up a solid base for the next installment.

Arcadia Bell is a 25-years-old magician who was borne with some unusual even for magicians abilities, - she can see halos of all the Aethyric and Earthbound demons around her. Not only that, she also has her own halo.

She believes that her parents were set up an...more

I was pleasantly surprised with this book considering that I started reading it without having a clue what it was about. It was especially nice because it's all about "magic" which is what they call it in this book. They are magicians, not witches, which is just one interesting difference. It made me laugh that they refer to humans as savages, a slang term for them. And anyone who is a demon or part demon but on earth are Earthbounds and easily to recognize (if you can see them) by their halos....more

Very interesting book indeed.
I am kinda new to the world of demons in the sense I haven't read a lot of books about them . But after this book I can honestly say I am now very interested .a lot of the books that introduced demons they either make them all bad or all weak . but this series has all shades of gray in it and I enjoyed it.
The main thing that I liked is Cady's love interest .I loved that he's in his forties it was a refreshing change in the story and the age difference did not bother...more

I really enjoyed this! And a lot of it came down to Lon and Jupe. I am a big big sucker for UF books involving families, and I just adored Jupe. I also thought it was refreshing to have Lon as an "older man". There was lots of dialogue, the world was easy to understand and accept, and the writing wasnt overly descriptive. This was fast paced, and a nice fast read, which makes a great change when you just want to chill out and not think too much ! Im not sure where the series can go from here, as...more

I really liked this! It was just what I needed to break out of my mini-book slump. Loved how low key the relationship is and that Lon is kind of stupid in a similar way that I am. :P And he has a kid! That's fun to read about.

I'm not entirely sure what I thought about the plot and my eyes kind of glazed over some of the action scenes, but, overall, a LOT of fun. Really looking forward to getting the next one from the library! (And then I have to WAIT for more??? Downside of getting into a series...more

This was an interesting take on magic and demons. I liked the fact that there was a teenage boy in the story and he didn't get ignored. He had a nice role to go along with his demon father, Lon, and the heroine, Cady. There were plenty of "old folk" jokes that made me laugh since Lon is in his early 40s and Cady is 24. The flow of the story was at a good pace and I was never bored. I will definitely read the next book.
