Summer's story continues in Forsaken Harbor and this time it sets off at a wild pace. From the very beginning, Kreitzer throws her characters into the fray and there isn't a moment to breathe. Summer, Gage and the rest of the crew all make an appearance in this installment. I think thought that they were more vivid than ever. Murr! May I just say that I am absolutely in love with this series?! Kreitzer’s books are truly a joy to read. Forsaken Harbor holds the same amount of mystery, suspense, romance, and action as the first book in the series did. The characters have continued to grow and the world in which the story takes place is brilliantly well written and rich in imagery. It’s definitely a book which will appeal to readers of all ages.

Murr! May I just say that I am absolutely in love with this series?! Kreitzer’s books are truly a joy to read. Forsaken Harbor holds the same amount of mystery, suspense, romance, and action as the first book in the series did. The characters have continued to grow and the world in which the story takes place is brilliantly well written and rich in imagery. It’s definitely a book which will appeal to readers of all ages.

The first thing I was looking for when I began reading this book was just how much of the back story Kreitzer would give. Seeing as this is the second book of the series and a lot occurred in the first book, I was curious how she would handle things. I was pleased to see that Kreitzer chose to give plenty of background information about events in Phantom Universe. Any reader coming to Forsaken Harbor would have no problems diving into the book and understanding what happened in the previous one. I’m not saying you can get away without reading the first book, why anyone would want to limit their exposure to just the one novel is beyond me, but there’s enough back story to make this a stand alone if you so desired…Though I will warn you that it ends on a cliff hanger, so there’s a good chance you’ll want to read the rest of the books in the series as they become available.

Back story aside, I was really impressed with how much Summer grew as a character in this story. She is really coming into her own as a strong leading character! It was fun to watch her go from being quiet and always letting others do the talking for her, to being a outspoken and confident young woman. I don’t want to say that Summer struck me as being very childish in the first book, but she definitely didn’t seem like a sixteen year old. Now, however, she’s acting her true age and I find that very refreshing.

Likewise it was nice to see more of Gage and Landon this time around. I’ve always liked Landon, so seeing him continue to stand up for Summer and yet also allow her be independent was great. Plus seeing him get his own chance to romance was fun too. Murr! In contrast, Gage has been an interesting character to me. I had mixed feelings for him in the first book and I think that was because I didn’t feel like he was around much. A part of me felt like he was too good to e true and just a tad too perfect a boyfriend. But now I can say with confidence that I really enjoy him. He’s got Summer’s best interests at heart, even if he takes the whole protection bit too far at times. Watching him deal with his jealousy towards Julian showed that he’s got his faults just like everyone else. I guess what I’m trying to say is he felt much more real in this book than he did in the first.

I loved, loved, LOVED the scene in which Summer learns to control her power! There was so much attention to detail that I actually had to read the scene twice because I found it so fascinating. The description of the nanomites and how they work to allow Summer to manipulate time was truly a well conceived idea! Is it wrong that I found myself itching to study Summer’s DNA and run my own tests in order to learn more? Yeah, this feline got caught up in the moment. Murr!

I also enjoyed the Recordings that Kreitzer interspersed in the story. These recording scenes help create a sense of mystery because as you read each one, more details concerning who is making them and why come to light. There are some surprising moments and while some questions get answered, other questions are created. They are the prefect lead up to the third book of the series, Burning Falls, which is sadly won’t be out until the end of the year. You can bet though that this feline will be keeping an eye out for news of its release. Murr! After everything that happened in this book, I’m now anxious to get my paws on the next one. =^-^=(less)

The story picks up only two hours after the ending of Phantom Universe, the series' first novel, and is packed with action. Summer, Gage, Landon, and the rest of her entourage are either on the move or getting into trouble throughout the story. Various governments and political organizations would like to use Summer to their advantage and the politics of the various federations and other groups, like the Secret Clock Society, are one of the focuses of Forsaken Harbor's beginning. The conflict between the governments as they jockey for Summer provide enough conflict to set up many of the larger themes explored in the story.

Summer gains strength, both physically and emotionally, as the novel progresses and her interactions with the leaders of the political organizations and her friends provide her with the experience and security necessary to feel comfortable pushing her limits and doing things that will surprise you as much as they surprise the characters in the book.

Another Secret Clock Society creation, Julian, is added to the list of Summer's admirers and provides enough tension to keep Summer and Gage's romance from growing with too much ease. Julian is also able to fill the group in on the Secret Clock Society's plans and provides some of the first hints at what we can expect from Forsaken Harbor is--and it ain't pretty.

Sprinkled throughout the book are "recordings" made by unidentified characters that highlight some rather nefarious characters. These snippets help create an air of mystery throughout the story that builds into excitement as you realize what is unfolding.

Even if you haven't read Phantom Universe (though it is recommended--it's a good story), you can easily follow Forsaken Harbor. Just enough back story is provided to keep readers who have skipped book one up to speed, but Kreitzer does not provide so much detail that it becomes cumbersome for anyone familiar with the previous plot. (Phantom Universe can currently be read on Goodsreads for free and can be downloaded on Nooks for free.)

If you're looking for a fairly fast-paced novel with a main character that accomplishes a lifetime's worth of personal growth, then Forsaken Harbor is for you.(less)

Ahhhh...Book two in The Summer Chronicles. In my opinion it TOTALLY surpasses book one.
Summer has her voice and man the girl sure as all uses it!!
I don't want to be around her when she's mad...or for that matter armed!!!

I can't get over how much action this book has packed into it....Wholly Boogers!!
Hover cars crash...Murders.... Buildings being blown up....and then some!!!
I won't even go into the Beach scene...I mean REALLY...OMG!!

Forsaken Harbor picks up almost immediately where Phantom Universe left off. Readers are thrust back into Summer’s story and a future world filled with danger and intrigue. Summer’s life becomes more complex and perilous when Julian enters the mix, and he helps Summer better understand her power and who she is while still trying to escape the clutches of The Secret Clock Society. The story is fast-paced and intense, chocked full of action and emotional turmoil, and one that you should not miss out on.

A note of warning before you proceed: I hope you are all prepared for a bias review. It is going to be Julian-centric, so please be ready.

I think this book was better than the first one (and no, not just because Julian was in it). There is more action, crazier plot twists, and even more emotional moments. Summer has rediscovered her voice after all these years, and she puts it to good use. She is stronger than before, actually bringing down some enemies herself, and she is also slowly developing her power (courtesy of Julian’s masterful teaching). She is definitely becoming a force to be reckoned with, and I like how she grew stronger, both emotionally and physically. Gage is also present with his flowery words (view spoiler) and love declarations, and he is just as protective and strong as before. Some old and new faces also enter the fray, and the insertion of these awesome characters made me enjoy this book that much more!

And now, for the moment I am sure you were all waiting for. Let’s talk about Julian, shall we? I like to think of myself as a loyal person. In the first book, I liked Gage and thought that his and Summer’s relationship was golden. Even when Julian made an appearance, I never thought that my loyalty to Gage would be called into question! Well, Julian has stolen that loyalty. Wait, forget stolen! He shattered, decimated, completely eradicated all the loyalty I had for Gage. I am 100%+ Team Julian! (Are there teams for Gage and Julian? If not, then they have just been created!) Oh, Julian, you who goes against the grain, what have you done to me? I now find myself unable and unwilling to be content with Gage and Summer’s relationship! Do not get me wrong, I still love Gage, but I would definitely prefer seeing Julian and Summer together.

Alright, now it is time for me to defend myself. Why do I like Julian more than Gage, you ask? Gage is perfect, which is something I liked about him in the beginning. Everything he did was right and just, and everything he said was what everyone wanted to hear. While this is not a problem, necessarily, once Julian was introduced, I realized that Gage was too perfect. Compared to Gage, Julian is a little rougher around the edges, a little more fierce, and a little more warrior like. He could care less what others think or say of him, and he will tell people the truth, regardless of whether they want to hear it or not. Gage treats Summer like she is a porcelain doll, whereas Julian wants her to learn how to fight and use her powers. Summer even admits (multiple times) that Julian lets her be who she is, and he does not hide things from her or treat her like she is delicate, which Gage does. With Summer and Julian having somewhat similar pasts, he is better able to understand her desire for power and strength, and he gives it to her. Again, Gage is not a bad guy from wanting to protect Summer from all bad things, but I like how straight and direct Julian was, believing that Summer could deal with everything. Julian has flaws and weaknesses, and that makes his character seem more real than Gage’s. I will say this one last time: I LIKE Gage, but I LOVE Julian, and I’m completely, inescapably, irrevocably on the side of Team Julian (and my loyalty shall not be broken this time).

Needless to say, I really enjoyed this book! With the story being told from both Summer and Julian’s point of view, there is a deeper understanding of more of the characters with even more action and plot twists being thrown in. There will be two more books published to complete the series, and they have already been entitled Burning Falls and Silent Forest , respectively. I am excited to see how this series will progress, and I cannot wait for another (heavy) dose of Julian! (less)

This book definitely suffered from second-in-a-series suckitis. I LOVED the first book. Summer consistently grew as a character overcoming years of abuse. What bothered me so much in this book is that I felt like Summer see-sawed between progress and backsliding in a really unsatisfying way.

I understand that PTSD doesn't go away over night but she made progress in the last book and certainly in this one too, but I felt like when it mattered, she was meek, terrified, useless Summer. Plus this is fiction not reality so it would have been more interesting for her to over come her fears. Or have some medical treatment. This is science fiction after all. If severe burns can be healed without scaring in a matter of days then why couldn't they have done something to lessen her PTSD?

My other big irritation? Traveling. She learns to travel but then never really remembers to use it. And covering that by saying "Oh it's so new to me I forgot I could do it" is such a cop out. Don't introduce her ability if she's not going to use it when she/ her friends are in trouble. (view spoiler)

The last and most severe grievance I had with this book was the love triangle. When will authors learn that NO ONE likes a love triangle?! Either have her be with Gage or have her be with Julian. Spare me that will they won't they. I just don't care. (view spoiler)

Summer's story begins right where Phantom Universe ends and you're immediately thrown into non-stop twists and turns. Forsaken Harbor definitely outshines Phantom Universe in every way. Being able to "live" through Summer's growth into the person she has become in the second novel was just amazing. There's something about Summer that makes you want to stick with her through everything and help her fight her battles along the way.

Laura Kreitzer has become one of my favorite authors because of her ability to tell an amazing story. When I got the opportunity to read this next book in her second series, I jumped at the chance. And I wasn't disappointed.

I really enjoyed Phantom Universe, the first book in the Summer Chronicles when I read it last year, and I was eager to get my hands on Forsaken Harbor soon after I finished.
