Since I've been doing quite a bit of reading about what life was like during the canal era, I cringed at all of the misinformation in this historical romance involving a lock keeper on the Lehigh Canal. Not only that, but the contrivances the author uses to get the young canal boat captain into Walnutport, where the pretty widowed lock keeper lives with her three precocious children, more than strains the limits of credibility. Then to top it all off, the book is heavy into religious philosophy,...more

Synopis: Widowed Sarah Turner has her hands full, raising three young children, tending the lock on the canal, baking bread, and washing clothes for boatmen. Although she's not looking for love, she's vowed not to lose her heart to a boatman. Yet she didn't count on meeting Captain Elias Brooks. Will she follow her heart where it leads or accept the proposal of a handsome land-loving blacksmith?

This is the third book in the Brides of Lehigh Canal Series, and we now find Sarah a widow and mother...more

SARAH'S CHOICE by Wanda E. Brunstetter is a delightful inspirational historical romance set in 1898 Walmutport,PA. It is the third in "Brides of Lehigh Canal",(#1 Kelly's Chance,#2 Betsy's Return) but can be read as a stand alone. It is well written with depth, details and history. This is a sweet comforting story of faith, healing, romance, experience on the Lehigh Canal, finding love, second chances and new beginnings. When Sarah has to choose between a land loving blacksmith and a boat man,who will...more

Sarah's Choice is the third book in the Brides of Lehigh Canal series by Wanda E. Brunstetter, though it can easily be read on its own, set to be released on December 1, 2010. Sarah lost her husband in a tragic canal accident and has been left to raise and support her three children on her own. In order to support her family she continues to be a lock tender. On the side she bakes bread (her true joy) to add to her small income. She has sworn to herself to keep her children from the canal life a...more

With this being the third book in the series, it would also as a stand alone book. Sarah, the main character, is a widower who lost her husband to an accident in the canal which leaves her working as the lock tender, a tough job for a woman. Sarah also has three young children that she must care for while constantly working six day per week. She is only looking to provide for her children and eventually get away from the canal which she had once did when she and her husband ran off to get marrie...more

Having read a number of Wanda Brunstetter’s books focusing on the Amish, I was intrigued when she began writing a series with a different historical setting – the Lehigh Canals. It was fascinating to learn a bit about the culture of that time and place, and I enjoyed this book as much as the first two.

Although this is certainly lighter fare overall, it makes a pretty good showing within the genre of Christian historical romantic fiction. I appreciated that the two main characters were already se...more

Sarah's Choice by Wanda Brunstetter is the third book in the Brides of Lehigh Canal series. I did not read the first two books at all, so this book is fine to read alone. Sarah's Choice is about Sarah Turner a mother of three. Sarah's husband got killed in an accident working the canal locks. Sarah is forced to take his hard labor job and do the best she can for her children. She also sells bread to the boatmen to help bring in more money. She also dreams of opening a bakery someday as she is an...more

I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley to review. I am under no obligation to write a positive review, just an honest one.

Sarah's Choice is the third book in the Brides of Lehigh Canal series by Wanda E. Brunstetter.

You can read my review of the first book, Kelly's Chance, here.

You can read my review of the second book, Betsy's Return, here.

And now, I have finished the third book in the series.

If you have read my prior reviews, you know that Brunstetter has not traditionally been...more

Very nice, historical Christian romance. This book was loaned to me and I was unaware that it is number three in a series. It can stand alone but am looking forward to reading the first two books in the series.
Sarah Turner has had enough of the Lehigh Canal. Not only did she grow up leading the mules that pulled her father's boat but now she tends the lock and would like nothing better than to get away from the water. Her options are limited as she is a widow with three small children . . . .

I have been waiting to read this book for quite a while now. I have been on the list at the library, so I waited it out instead of buying it. This was the third book in the Brides of Lehigh Canal series, and it was just as fulfilling as the first two. I think I learned more about life in the 1800s in this book than I did in the others though. Sarah is a lock tender for the canal, and I had no idea that this was a job at one point in time! At the end of the book, the author gave a website that sh...more

I think I'm getting burned out on Brunstetter. Either that or this book is extraordinarily formulaic, even among the formulaic genre of romance. This was a quick read, a Twinkie for the soul, and required no heavy thinking or emotional investment. It will be a while before I pick up another of her books, but just like a Twinkie I'll probably read another at some point in the future (and then possibly question myself).

Being a mother is a time consuming job.
Being a single mother is an all consuming job.
Being a lock tender is an all consuming job. They work, usually non-stop, from 5 a.m. until sometimes as late as 9 p.m. six days a week.
Try to do both jobs.
No one knew how but Sarah was pulling it off, but pulling it off she was. Ever since her husband was crushed in the lock more than a year ago, Sarah has been maintaining both jobs. Of course, she has had help. Her mother-in-law has been living with Sarah and...more

A; Third in the series; another good tale. Enjoyed learning of Sarah's life after her husband, Sam, was killed in an earlier book. She's another strong woman who endured much. A nice love story at the heart of it all and some interesting new characters. Is there a 4th in the works?

I was disappointed with this book. It was a mice story but it was laborious to read. The dialogue didn't flow well for me. It also felt very preachy. I've read some other great Christian themed books that have a great message without being preachy.
Donna
Tender Christian story of Elias' fondness and eventual love for a widow and her young family who tends a lock system. Old fashioned setting. Cute story.

Nice read. Not extremely well written, but it was a nice story & I enjoyed the characters.
Dana Casey
Easy quick read. Good story line

Not the best work by Brunstetter, but still good.

Liked the story of courage, strength and trust in God. Story of a young woman w/3 children who'd lost her husband and done man's job to support the family. And young man who'd had a chance to come from under the shadow of his father and to fulfill his own destiny.

a sweet easy read romance in an unusual setting. take it for what it is, a fun book to get lost in. I liked it.
