For many children who live far away from their grandparents, it can be hard to understand why they can't always be together. Patricia MacLachlan has created a bridge to close the distance by finding connections in memories and the moon they share. A beautiful, lyrical poem coupled with Bryan Collier's rich collages, Here and There celebrates the importance of staying close...more

Your Moon, My Moon: A Grandmother's Words to a Faraway Child

Here is a story that really is more than simply the love letter from a grandmother to the grandchild that she misses so dearly, though that is where the book's emotions are firmly rooted, and the reality of that separation is evident on every single page. What gives Your Mo...more

I bought and read this book on the occasion of meeting Bryan Collier at the Elizabeth York Children's Literature Festival at Anderson University (so, of course, it's autographed!) This book reminds me of several occasions when I've looked at the moon and thought of sharing it with other distant friends or family members. (Remember the John Denver song "Shanghai Breezes"?) After seeing Collier's original artwork from some of his other books, I have a new appreciation for his wonderful craft of co...more

Mommy's review from 10/8/11 -

This isn't really our type of book. We both love books that feature a parent's (or grandparent's or some such) love for a child. So that wasn't where the book fell off for us.
It was the writing. I very rarely like a book written like this. I prefer whole sentences at the very least.
"You would laugh." "Then another." "One, two, three."
Those aren't sentences that I like to read when I'm trying to get into a story.
Julia said she liked the pictures and I do have to admi...more

In her signature poetic text, MacLachlan has created a picture book that celebrates the continued connection between family members who are apart. Here, a grandmother lives in a cold area of the world, while her grandchild lives far away in Africa. She watches the snow start to fall while he is in the hot sun. She wishes they were together to ice skate or together to swim in the lake where he lives. There are many things that connect them, from the dogs in both places to the sun, but especially...more

A grandmother's story about love for family, distance, and memories. Your Moon, My Moon attempts to tell a young child that even though the physical distance is great, the familial bond is strong.

The story is mediocre and the illustrations are creepy, especially the ones where are photographs are cut out and 'pasted' to the bodies of the parents. The premise is a good one, but the execution is lacking.
Melody
Sweet story of a grandmother's longing for her grandchild & acknowledgment that the same moon shines down on both of them. The illustrations were not to my taste, with paintings mixed with little glued-on bits of photographs. And I wasn't entirely taken with the faces, either. But the story was lovely.

I liked this book.
It's a sweet story from a grandmother to a granddaughter, who share the same moon.
The illustrations are collage and sometimes have a lot going on, but I do love Bryan Collier's work.

Haiku Review:
You and I, so far
from each other, yet we have
the same moon with us.

The distance between grandmother and child was a bit farther than I anticipated (New England and Africa). You can hear grandma's love for her grandchild that lives so far away. Love the connection of the moon.
Alyson
Touching story about a grandmother and a grandchild living far away. I usually like Bryan Collier's illustrations, but I found the mix of photo faces and painted faces jarring here - especially the child's parents.
Sandy
What a pairing: MacLachlan and Collier! This could have been a self-indulgent whine, but is instead a poetic, multi-layered story that works on many levels, always touching world-wide heartstrings.

The cover evokes "Good Night, Moon." A nice story, but I didn't really connect with it. I think the situation depicted in the story is a bit too specific to appeal to a broad audience.
Mary Anne
A beautiful story from a grandmother to a grandchild about how even though they are far apart she remembers things about the child and the child knows her too.

Patricia Maclachlan always makes me cry. Her books are so sentimental.
Megan
Beautiful illustrations and poetry.

Thi is a very sweet book written from a grandmother to her grandson who lives far away, but they share the same moon. It is a perfect book for a grandchildwho lives far away from their grandparent.

Just to specific of a letter from one grandmother missing their grandchild far away. Doesn't seem like it would be relatible to most kids in even similar situations.
