Welcome to the Werepocalypse...Lovecraftian-style.

5 easy, no-doubt-about-it stars for this smart, well-crafted and FUNbelievably entertaining popcorn-fest of gun-metal, monsters and the baddest minotaur coat-wearing, creature-killing, Alpha werewolf to ever come down the pike. This is a high-quality, well-written page-turner that is a blast to read and yet will not leave you feeling the pangs of having indulged in too much brain candy.

This is a guilt-free pleasure.

Just finished it and I'm still hyped. As with the other Monster Hunter Nation series installments, this story is action packed with lots of humor and well-drawn characters.

I don't like to read anything about these books before I read them so I went in not knowing about the POV switch. I got used to it quickly and, while I did miss the old gang, the new characters were engaging enough to keep the story alive and flowing. I do hope we see more of MHI in the next book, though -- along ...more

"Monster Hunter Alpha" is the third book in the "Monster Hunters" series. This book focuses primarily on Harbinger; the usual cast is sadly absent, except for passing reference. While I missed Owen, Julie and the gang, the chance to delve into Harbinger's hundred year plus past is a chance too good to pass up and readers won't be disappointed.

Two things will stand out almost immediately to faithful readers of "Monster Hunters":

I am ambivalent with this entry in the Monster Hunter Nation. I have grown to care for the main cast of characters and when I heard that Alpha would only follow Harbinger I was put off. But, as a big fan of Correia's action packed writing style I bit down that sour lump of dread and began reading. I almost instantly picked up on the subtle differences in the narratives; I don't mean that this is told in the third person. Alpha has a much darker tone to it, which I suppose is only natural given t...more

It's always dangerous when a series shifts to a different narrator/character (here from Pitt to Harbinger), let alone changing voice (from first person to third), but my initial concerns for Monster Hunter Alpha were alleviated quickly. Harbinger, the century-old werewolf and effective head of Monster Hunters International finds himself trapped in a small town under siege by werewolves -- and worse. Juggling with his past, a corrupt federal monster hunter, some unscrupulous competing monster h...more
Fangs for the Fantasy
Unlike the previous books, this book follows Harbinger. Harbinger is the de-facto leader of Monster Hunter International – and has been for 100 years. He has been hunting monsters for all that time – for his company, for his country and when various powers that be hold a dagger over his head.

Because he’s a werewolf. One of the few monsters in the US that is exempt from the bounties – and he’s earned that by being a weapon for war used and abused by the US for a century. But these battl...more

MHA is the third of a series of Monster Hunter books by Larry Correia, and it is a great and fun read. I've "known" Larry from gun boards for years, and got to read his and Mike Kupari's online story of Nightcrawler (soon to be published by Baen as Dead Six this fall)and have enjoyed the previous two books: Monster Hunter International and Monster Hunter Vendetta as well. This one gives one of his touchstone characters a whole book to himself, and it is awesome. If you enjoy action...more

Yet another very worthy sequel in Correia's MHI series, "MH: Alpha" focuses on a new protagonist (one of my favorites from the first 2 books) Earl Harbinger, the near immortal redneck werewolf. Correia has a talent for blending his encyclopedic knowledge of firearms, talent for paranormal antagonists and high octane action scenes into a remarkable finished product. At a few times the book pauses to allow the reader to catch their breath before lurching forward at a break neck pace. Cha...more

As you may or may not know, I am a big fan of Larry Correia’s writing. His blending of action with the supernatural combined with his instinctual story telling acumen is always a delight to read. But I was a little concerned about Monster Hunter Alpha. Why? Because so many reviewers had written that they were disappointed in the story because their favorite characters were no-shows. Bummer. No Owen Z. Pitt? No Julie Shackleford? No Agent Franks? No Grant Jefferson? Phooey. Then I read...more

Recommends it for: Fans of action
This book is actually a departure from the two previous books. Not entirely mind you – same universe, same world building, but different character focus. This book is all about Earl and his back story, rolled into another kill or be mulched kind of action story.

I liked this book just as much as the others even without the original cast of characters. Earl has lived a long and interesting life. A number of long term things seem to circle back to him in this story. It has the same great ...more

Well damn. That was a close one. For about the first third (maybe even the entire first half) of this book I was worried. I wasn't really getting into it, it wasn't having even close to the same effect on me as the first two in the series had. I mean don't get me wrong.. I still liked it. But I Loved the first two. Hell, if this were the first in the series I probably would have Loved it from the get go as well, and then I would have exploded with glee upon reading the others. But it's not the f...more

It seems that Larry Correia is finding his groove as he goes with the MHI books. I enjoyed the first one very much, I loved the second one, and I loved the 3rd one equally.

I was at first a little saddened by the change of Point of View from Owen to Earl Harbinger. But, you rapidly get into the fact that Earl Harbigner is a total badass. This book is a little lighter on the guns, since most of the combat is done with werewolves, and not guns, but I found I really enjoyed the themat...more

This is a darker and grittier entry into the MHI saga. In this one, we follow Earl Harbinger and learn a lot more about his history as he faces up to a creature that threatens to overtake the world with werewolf legions. This book was a lot closer to a real horror story, with a high body count and less levity than some of the other entries. It is, in many ways, a smaller story, with fewer threads and characters. That said, the characters that are present are well drawn and interesting. Perhaps m...more

This is the third book in the Monster Hunter International series by Larry Correia. The first two volumes followed Owen in his battles with all things monster. This volume follows the leader of MHI, Earl Harbinger as he has to face the unexpected. Thinking that he "only" has to face an old nemesis of his. Little does he know, that he has to face something far more deadly, during an epic storm in the north woods of Michigan.

If you like your monsters vicious, and you like m...more

I finished Monster Hunter Alpha a few days ago, it was okay. I guess it should've been as good as MHI and MHV but since there was a gap between reading the 2nd and 3rd book in the series, although they're independent enough, I wasn't in the right mood any longer. That, and the shift in protagonist from Owen Pitt to Earl Harbinger. It's not that I don't like Harbinger, no, I do like the guy, but like I said, I wasn't exactly in the mood I was in when I read the first two books and definite...more

This third book in the Monster Hunter series is deeper and more gory than the previous books. There is still some humor, but as we learn more about Earl's past and watch him come face-to-face with a nasty present, there are also some more sad events that occur. The characters from the previous books are pretty much only referred to, and the book starts with a not of switching perspectives. It took me longer to get into this book than the previous two. However, it has a deeper and more dramatic s...more

Review of Monster Hunter Alpha by Larry Correia

Werewolves are awesome, and the coolest werewolf character I’ve ever read about is Earl Shackleford. He goes by Earl “Harbinger” now, and he’s in charge of the monster hunting company, Monster Hunter International (MHI) in New York Times bestselling author Larry Correia’s uber cool urban fantasy world that mirrors our own.

I’m so glad Correia gave Earl his own book, Monster Hunter Alpha, as Earl was an important and mysterious, bu...more

Larry Correia, you are a very mean author!!! Ok, I loved the book, right up to the end, and now I need the next book in the series. You know the one: the one that may not even be written yet. Some authors will leave a book on a cliffhanger, but not Larry. He wrapped it all up nice and neat, making it a wonderfully complete story. However, he also set the stage for a next book without making any promises. Aaargh!!!

Now, as to the rest of this book rather than just the finish. The story w...more

I think the author his finally hit his stride with Monster Hunter Alpha. At no point did the book drag for me, and so it was really hard to put down. This book takes off shortly after the events of the second book, and included prominent characters from the previous two books. The author is an obvious gun enthusiast, but has kinda gone a bit overboard at times in the previous two books with detail. Again, just enough to keep things interesting. I highly recommend this one.

This book stays with the quick pace set by the first two books and has lots of action. And the author does a better job of fleshing out the supporting characters than the first two. But I was disappointed that the protaganist for this one was one of the supporting characters from the first two, Earl Harbringer. I was just getting to know the hero of the other books, Owen Pitt, and thought that book 3 was a little soon for a spin off. I'm not sure where he'll go with book 4, but I'll definitely b...more

First of all: Best us of industrial snow-clearing equipment in a book. Ever.

Excellent backstory for one of Larry's finest characters, Earl Harbinger. And Larry's characters are all very fine. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the man has an eye for character. His people (and monsters) are all very real. His dialogue is breezy and fun, as well. And he does a bang up job of creating worlds, mythology, magic systems.

So why not five stars?

Once again, Larry does not disappoint! I thoroughly enjoyed Monster Hunter Alpha--for those of you unfamiliar with the series it's about big guys with big guns killing big monsters--and I can't wait for the next installment. Earl Harbinger has always been one of my favorite characters so I loved that he had a whole book to himself. MHA is a fast-paced, thrill ride of an action novel. Even though I'm not a gun-person, you gotta love a fight scene where a guy shoots a 85mm gun. And in case you're ...more

Larry Correia is on my must-read list. He writes action scenes about as well as anyone and I thoroughly enjoy the world and increasingly intricate metaplot of the world of Monster Hunters. This book doesn't focus on Z, but rather on the solo adventures of the head of the agency... who just happens to be a powerful werewolf.

Definitely worth a read if you like monsters, guns, urban fantasy, action, or reading.

It is nice to have a main character switch in a series once in a while and this one does not disappoint. I enjoyed the backstory on where werewolves came from as well as some of the shady government stuff that goes on in behind the scenes. Overall a good book that wraps up the plot but still leaves enough new mysteries to make we want to read the next book in the series.

Take one part Obi-Wan, tireless teacher and mentor. Add it to one part Clint Eastwood, pissed off old guy who just doesn't give a damn. Then stir in a whole keg of Whoop-Ass and one blood-thirsty meta-wolf and what you'll have is Earl Harbinger, leader of MHI. The biggest, baddest, monster hunting mofo to ever walk the earth.

This outing into the MHI universe the team is left behind, as is most of the the techno-gun-geek-speak, and we get some quality time with The Man himself.

A pack of werewolves isolates a small town and goes on a rampage, attempting to kill or turn everyone in town.

Correia writes what I want to read.

This has the widest range of werewolf variations I have ever seen, King of the WW's, demigod WW, half turned zombie WW's, Communist Russian special forces assassin WW, Hot redheaded female WW.

I wonder how Jason Lococo and Owen Pitt will react when they meet each other.

I loved the 2,000 hp snowblower.

There were some truly gruesome scenes in this book, I skimmed over most of them. An entire town turning into zombie werewolves and being ground to a pulp, literally. Still I again felt strongly connected to the extremely vivid characters, with all their flaws. It kept me reading and I'm sure to go back for more when they come out.

My new favorite author continues to bring fat, ham-fisted, mega awesomeness that doesn't relent even when the book is finished! I finished this book around 0300 this morning and now it's 1800 and I'm still thinking about this book. I can't WAIT to read what's going to happen in this universe next! I especially want to know what is going to happen when Loco and Owen have their inevitable new meeting. And do I sense a Heather Kerkonen based novel on the horizon? Anyway I can't recommend this ...more

This third installment of the Monster Hunter series was just as awesome as the first two. The focus of this story was not MHI (Monster Hunter International), but on the leader of MHI, Earl Harbinger. The characters were consistent, the writing focused, and the story flowed at a steady pace, making this book hard to put down. If you enjoyed the first two books in this series, you won't be disappointed in the third.
