I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You (Gallagher Girls #1)
by
Ally Carter
The Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women is a fairly typical all-girls school, that is, if every school taught advanced martial arts in PE, the latest in chemical warfare in science; and students received extra credit for breaking CIA codes computer class. So in truth, Gallagher Academy might claim to be a school for geniuses, but its really a school for spies. Ca...more

Welcome to The Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, an all-girls school located just outside of Roseville, Virginia. Anyone looking at this elite private boarding school would see just what The Gallagher Academy wants you to see--a preppy school for privileged girls, complete with a guardhouse and stone wall to keep the curious away from their precious charges. And they'd be right, of course, and yet they would be so very, very wrong!

I picked this book up because of all the media hyper surrounding it—the Disney option and the New York Times bestseller status, not to mention the cute cover and interesting premise. Who hasn’t found themselves imagining what it would be like to be a secret government operative during an especially boring Physics lecture? Behold: the appeal of this book (to me, at least).
With all this in mind, why oh why was I so disappointed upon finishing it?

Yes. I'm a full grown adult. Yes, I thought this was pretty freaking awesome! Don't laugh at me!! *scowls*
These are the kinds of books I turn to when I want something fun and silly; a change of pace. A high-school-drama-filled book that I can read and enjoy without the need to use my brain a whole lot. It doesn't claim to be a deeply significant story that will blow your mind with its complexity. It's a relatively straightforward plot, but with all kinds of shameless fun, plenty of humor, an ado...more

I am a daydreamer—I think most readers are. As a freshman in high school, I had a recurring fantasy about being a spy. At the time, I was taking Russian classes (back when the Cold War was a recent memory) and spent hours imagining what life would be like if I’d been bred for espionage. What if I were fluent in fourteen languages? What if I could kill a man (or woman) with a ketchup bottle?
I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You by Ally Carter is my teenage fantasy come to life.

I think that overall, this may be more like 3.5 stars but it kept me amused and made me laugh several times so I'll give it 4 stars for that! I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You is a fun and light book about a school for female spies. I love the idea behind the book and was really excited to get started on it.
This book is full of strong, independent girls who can look after themselves. Not really something you see all too often in young adult literature, sadly! That's certainl...more

I love spy movies. So, when I knew this book was about a spy school for girls, my logic told me that I have to read it. The blurb is so intriguing and cool. And when I saw it was available in Netgalley, I went for it immediately. Actually, it was the first book that I requested. So, why did I wait so long to read it? It is mainly due to the writing. It is obviously for younger teens. For this reason, I find it hard to relate to the protagonist. And as it nearly comes to the end of the duratio...more

I liked this book in the same way that I like the Princess Diaries movies (1 and 2). It's cute. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I giggle when it's witty. And when the lights come up (or I reach the back cover), there's a smile on my face.
Cammie "The Chameleon" goes to a spy school. I mean, how cool is that! Yes, at times, the plot is cringe-worthy (I mean, the basic conflict is the fact that she can't tell the perfect boy that she can throw him to the pavement from six different positions), but...more

This book was really good and I know I am going to read the second one!!! The main character's name is Cammie Morgan and the review says she goes to a "genius" school, which is actually a spy school, called Gallagher Academy. She learns/knows how to speak 14 different languages fluently, and she can kill a man in 7 different ways!!! But, the one thing Gallagher hasn't prepared her for is how to deal with an ordinary boy who thinks you're an ordinary girl that she falls for. Ugh!!!!!!!! I started...more

Cammie Morgan is your average girl except for one fact; she goes to an all exclusive boarding school for spies in training. I loved this book. If you want a light fluffy read this is your book. Beware there is a lot of mooning over boys (that’s basically what this whole book is about) but it’s done in a cute way and by the time it gets annoying action begins. Cammie and her friends have to learn how to break out of their little protective bubble Gallagher Academy has given...more

True confession: I love spies. In college, while my fellow Poli. Sci. students were reading Marx, I was reading Ian Fleming. True story. So imagine my delight when I realized that Ally Carter wrote a series based on an exclusive spy school for girls?
Oh, the things I love about this first story. Well, there’s the fact that our protagonist’s dad is missing. And her mother is the headmistress. And then there’s the small matter of the boy who captures Cam’s attention. A townie na...more

Ally Carter was an author who I came across last year when I picked up her Heist society series. It was a series which was cleverly written, humorous and a lot of fun. After thoroughly enjoying it, I thought I would check out her Gallagher girls series.

What an awesome concept for a book! Teenage girls who just happen to be spies. On that alone, I started reading. Right from the beginning, Cammie was a fabulous main character. Funny, relatable, hardworking, and loyal to both her friends and her mom. Ally Carter did a great job of making the life of a teenage spy seem both familiar and fun. For example, the classes. Countries of the World, Covert Operations, Ancient Languages, Culture and Assimilation, and Protection and Enforcement. Each and ev...more

This book had a fun premise: An all-girl spy academy disguised as a private school for rich kids. The problem here was in the telling--not the author's, but the reader's.
When my wife and I travel on longer car trips, we tend to listen to audio books checked out from the library--mostly YA chick lit, for some reason. Our friend Andrea enjoyed this one, and we figured we'd like it, too. By the end of the sixth CD, we realized that we'd have liked it more if we had read it quietly to ourselves.

I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have To Kill You, is a great book that is not only for girls. In this novel, the main character Cammie Morgan is a normal young lady. But there is one little thing that is weird about her, she goes to all-girl spy school called The Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women. The reason why I said that this school was a spy school was because they teach fifteen different languages, the latest in chemical warfare, how to brake CIA codes, and advanced martia...more
You thought regular high school was tough, well Cammie is going to Gallagher Academy, an all girl school for spies. By sophomore year she is fluent in over ten languages, can kill a man seven different ways and hacks into the CIA for extra credit. So falling for a boy shouldn't be so stressful, not when you are a spy-in-training. Having a relationship with a boy may be the toughest mission Cammie may try to undertake.

The main reason I picked up this book was because of the title; it's totally cute. And when I read the blurb, I liked the storyline. What's not to like about a girl genius who's currently a sophomore in SPY school? I've watched enough movies to know that there'll be cool gadgets and undercover cops involved.

I like Carter's books because they are appropriate for the audience intended to read them. But I will say I can only take her books every few months, especially when I'm listening. I think these border on juvenile literature, and I'm pretty sure that the younger set...i.e. pre-teens...are probably more interested in them than the older teenagers. Still, Carter writes endearing characters who grow on you. And the stories are innocent and original. I like the idea of an all girl's school devoted t...more
I loved, loved, loved this book! It was so funny--like, laugh out loud funny--had some really good characters, and an interesting plot (though pretty simple). It was pretty original, too. At least, I've never read anything like it before. AND there was absolutely no questionable content. Nothing whatsoever. It was 100% clean, which is kind of shocking for the genre, which usually sneaks some stuff in. I can't wait to read the next one!
Ahhh, the first book in the Gallagher Girls series! When I think of this book, I immediately think of the hottie, Josh. When Cammie goes out on "field trip," she falls in love with the only one who notices her when she is undercover as the Chameleon. As you would've guessed, relationships with secrets never work out well. But Cammie is good at keeping secrets. Can she keep hers or will Josh find out EVERYTHING? Read to find out how this love story ends!
The first Gallagher Girls book was very quick and easy read. It's not complex and it's easy to follow, but the basis of a spy-school for girls is an interesting one. I liked all of the characters that were introduced and Cammie is a promising protagonist - It's nice to see girls being shown as strong characters in the YA genre. The romance between Cammie and Josh was sweet enough without being over the top. The book could be stepped up a level, but it's definitely good as an easy read and I don'...more

Okay, so, this is not exactly for my age - this is something written for pre-young-adult readers, but still - the book was hilarious and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
I loved most of the characters and the plot, found the terms used very suitably, laughed out loud at the change of writing that made parts sound like quotes from a spy report but had ridiculous context.
I found the book light, funny and relaxing.
I hope the next ones in the Gallagher Girls series get more serious and more complex because I...more

This is a very fun (I seem to say that a lot about books) YA novel about a girl who attends a boarding school for young spies-in-training. Cammie Morgan is the daughter of the school's headmistress, and she has life in her school figured out. Things get complicated when she meets a local boy in town, a boy who doesn't know that she goes to Gallagher Academy, a boy who thinks that Gallagher is a school for rich girl geniuses not a school for spies. Can Cammie keep her cover intact? This book is a...more
