5 stars – Historical Romance

This is an entertaining, delightful, spicy romantic romp about a stifled 30-year-old secretary/writer who finds her ‘etiquette above all else, proper manners are gold, and I always do what I’m told’ code of living challenged by her publishing boss, a dashing, debonair rake who doesn’t give a flying fig about society’s rules or propriety ever since a painful, scandalous divorce to a young American left him jaded about women, relationships, and marriage.

I liked the fact that she was under appreciated secretary and he realized that he couldn't do without her. I liked how she proved him wrong on how she thought her ideas would be interesting to the readers and she stood up for herself. Got to love a strong heroine character!! Laura Lee Guhrke is one of my favorites!

And Then He kissed Her by Laura Lee Guhrke is a fast simple read that was exactly what I was in the mood for. I haven't read anything else by LLG but I've been seeing her name around for a bit now and I think she has a great Historical Romance voice. Nothing grandiose, a bit borrowed from Austen, but comforting like hot chocolate on a cold winter night.

Emma is the best Hist. Romance heroine I've read in a long time. Independent and confident in her own abilities, she's working for our hero Marlo...more

I read And Then He Kissed Her 2.5 years ago and remember loving it, though it was before I started rating my books and keeping track of my ratings. After finishing it a second time today, I completely understand why I loved it so much and why I remember it so fondly. It was an amazing book and definitely warrants a 5-star rating!! The only thing I wished for was an epilogue.

First a disclaimer: The one star is based solely on my personal preferences and not on the obvious trend in romance reading. That having been said...This book has very little to do with what the description on the cover states. It is more a study in how a man worms and wheedles his way into a woman of strong moral character and virtue's bed. It takes two thirds of the book to do this, with him, in the final third, enjoying an illicit affair with her even though she feels horribly guilty and used...more

I enjoyed this historical. This isn't a time period (1893) that I've read very much about, so I admit some of the details (the typewriter, omnibus and trains) would catch me off guard and cause me to pause until I remembered I wasn't reading a Regency story. I enjoyed Emma and Harry's discussions about what is proper behavior for an unmarried woman and I especailly loved the discussion about the chicken wings.

At first I did not like Harry at all! The book started out with us meeting his mistress who he has just ended it with. And poor Emma must put up with the rude lady! But then something changes and you fall in love with Harry at times. This book was very good. I have to say that I loved the end it had me crying and smiling at the same time.

Side note: Maybe because I just saw this movie but the relationship between Harry and Emma reminded me of IronMan. How he always had a new woman in his bed and...more

It's the 1890s, London, and Miss Emma Dove is easily the only female secretary in the city. She's had the post for five years and proved to be exceedingly efficient and reliable. Her boss, the Viscount Harry Marlowe, owner of a successful publishing and newspaper business, is divorced (a scandalousoutcome that took five years to achieve), dissolute, and a rake, and gets Miss Dove to buy his parting gifts for his mistresses. She takes all this calmly, giving the impression that she is prim, prope...more

The Story: Harry Marlowe is a successful publishing mogul and a known ladies' man. For the last five years his life--business and personal--has been kept in order through the efforts of his sensible, complacent, and remarkably efficient secretary, Emma Dove.

Emma is a self-declared 'girl-bachelor' with an expertise in etiquette and housekeeping, a real precursor to Martha Stewart. She has long-since talked herself out of falling for her boss's charms, but she can't help but feel like she's missin...more

It was supposed to be good!!!!! But that damn heroine ruined it for me!!!!!!!

This is more like a vent, if you can tolerate this kind of heroine, then you'll find this rather hot, romantic read...so don't let my opinions deter you

She is so PRIM and PRUDE and annoyingly self conscious as to what others think of her! IT drives me crazy!!!!!

The story has a good premise and has the potential to be a very funny story (which is the reason why I decided to read it). However, it is unrealistic to me. In the world the author has her story set in, a women's virtue is very important. If it was got about that her morals were lacking, she would have problems with obtaining a job, finding a place to live and keeping her friends. However knowing all this, the main character (who is quite intelligent) decides to lose her virginity to a man who...more

A beautiful story in an England where society rules are changing. Our heroine is a secretary, something unheard of from a female in her time, and her employer is a scandalous forward thinking peer, who doesn't really care for society's rules. This is one of their biggest differences, since Emma is as proper as can be and the books on etiquette she writes and tries to get him to publish are proof of that.

Discovering that Harry has never actually read any of the manuscripts she gave him, Emma deci...more

I bought the book ( the french version) in january, and it took me, quite a few months to finish it. It is not badly written. But it is a pretty dull romance with no extraordinary scene or big significant moment. I am not really into historical romance but I started this book with an open mind.

On a good note, the romance was building nicely through the book. It was believable though admittedly slow, but it's the only reason I didn't completely throw the book away. The characters don't really lac...more

Miss Emmaline Dove is the consummate secretary. In the five years she's worked for the Viscount Marlowe, she's made his life easier than he deserves. She smooths all of his bumps including buying gifts for his family, meeting with his publishers, and even giving his mistresses their conge. She's grateful that he has given her the chance to prove that women can do the same job as men, and he even pays her the same salary as her male counterparts. But she really wants to be an author and Marlowe k...more

My first book by LLG and I loved it.
It kept me captivated all along without any overdose of angst, teasing interludes or any such thing.
It a gently flowing sort of a romance and all along I knew it was good enough to be a 4-4.5 starrer. What clinched it the 5 star -favorite status was one line, just a single line and one not even uttered by any character of "significance".
It follows below.

This is my first book by this author and i was interested to read it because it comes highly recommended in Amazon.

It did not dissapoint and it make Laura Lee Guhrke's books one of my "to read".

The story set in the turn of the 20th century when industrial changes comes and swept England. When agriculture is no longer enough and aristrocacy is on the decline for the rise of new money.

Industrial revolution also brought changes in women's role. No longer in the domestich sphere, many young women...more

I've been on a historical romance kick lately and this one totally fit the bill. The hero and heroine don't instantly fall head-over-heels in love with one another. It's actually romantic to watch them discover their feelings and it feels very organic and like a natural progression.
Emma has worked for Lord Marlowe for five years as his secretary, highly unusual for a woman of the late 19th Century to be treated and accorded a respected career. She does her job perfectly and keeps Lord Marlowe's...more

I can't think of the last time that I read a book that skipped all the action, villain plots, big misunderstandings, and just focused on good old-fashioned romance. And Then He Kissed Me did just that, and it was like water to my soul. It quenched a thirst I didn't know I had....to get back to the basics.

This book is funny. Really funny. It had me laughing from the first page. The dialogue is witty, smart, and fast-paced. This is a quick and priceless read. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

So I was putzing around on the AAR website earlier and came across the listing for the Reader Favorites 2007-2008.. This book won for "Best Heroine", so I decided to give it a chance.

Not my usual "historical" tastes, this book was set in the 1890's -- where such devices as trains and telephones and typewriters abound (wow that's a lot of "T" words!). I admit, that threw me off a bit, but the time setting was necessary -- in a Regency romance, the entire concept of "girl bachelors" simply wouldn'...more

Apparently, it is perfectly ok for a woman not to have any morals or to have too many morals and be divested of those morals with ease.

Seriously, these books (this one especially) act like there is something wrong with having morals. Morals are not something you should throw away over one damn guy who can kiss well. And why can't women ever seem to control themselves? Why is it that women go from virgins (why are they always virgins?) to enjoying sex in a really short period of time? Learn some...more

selama 5 tahun 'mengabdi' ama Harry, Emma tau betul karakter bos nya itu.

You know how some romances start off strong and then wind down and peter out? This is the opposite. It starts out a bit slow and then gets more and more intense until the end.

Emma is a thirty year old secretary near the end of the 20th century. She is an aspiring writer, never married, and has always made sure she does what is expected of her. She works hard and has earned a small flat for herself.

Harry is a viscount, and Emma's boss. He sees that the aristocracy is dying and even though it's "...more

Wonderful story about two broken people that find love by accident in the end of the century London (1893) as society is in the midst of great changes. I love the subject that Miss Emmaline Dove attacks in her society, the plight of the Girl-bachelor as well as other mundane subjects in a woman's world at that time. Of course it wasn't going to be interesting to a man that lives with three sisters, his mother and his grandmother, he has probably become completely deaf to any subjects outside of...more

I'd say very well done L. L. Guhrke!

This was such a fun read. It reminded me a bit of "Two weeks notice". It had a pace of romantic comedy and it was really funny.

First half was kind of slow, but despite the lack of romantic aspect I didn't mind, because the banter between H/h was witty and just a pleasure to read.
The second half was very sexy and I appreciated some Rules of a Romance bending like (view spoiler)[Emma changing her mind to have sex with Harry (hide spoiler)] or Big Misunderstand...more

Emma is a quiet, well spoken, follower of the rules. Good social etiquette has always been a priority for her, something that has been drummed into her head since she was a young girl. She is a woman of 30, single and resigned to the fact that she will forever be a spinster.

Lord Marlowe (Harry) is a rule breaker. He believes in living life to the fullest and just enjoying oneself. He throws caution to the wind and believes the opinions of those outside of his family mean nothing. Society all bu...more

“I enjoyed reading when I was a boy, but these days, I read all the time and it has rather taken the pleasure out of it for me. When I am at leisure, reading is the last thing I want to do.”

“That makes sense, I suppose. But for me, reading is an adventure. It makes me an armchair traveler and takes me places I shall never be able to go.”

“Harry - “No plovers no pigeons no snipe. No oysters mussels clams or whole lobsters. No artichokes no savories no cheese.” He paused for breath then went on “Nothing too rich nothing too highly seasoned. And never more than one glass of wine. Did I miss any no-noes ”

Emma - She sighed. “When it comes to my work I do wish you would be serious.”

Harry - “I am serious ” he assured her. “After reading this I understand why women have such tiny waists and go about fainting all the time. I thought it was corsets but no. You’re all hungry .”
