Hallelujah! The Sweet Potato Queens are back!

In 1999, Jill Conner Browne, royal boss of Jackson, Mississippi's own glorious Sweet Potato Queens, introduced them to the world in the hilarious bestseller The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love (which contained everything you ever need to know about Love, Life, Men, Marriage, and the importance of Being Prepared). But, fortunat...more

Jill Conner Browne continues giving queenly advice in God Save the Sweet Potato Queens. A follow-up to The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love, this book expands on many of the same topics: love, marriage, motherhood, fiancés, style and the importance of attitude. In addition she shares a number of funny stories from fans around the country many of whom have started royal families of their own. The chapter entitled "Matters of the Heart" is a touching story about a long time friend of the author....more

Perhaps it was all the hype, or perhaps it was just because I didn't read the first one, but this book, while tickling my funny bone and warming the cockles of my heart, did not entirely stand up to my expectations.

This is not to say that the book didn't accomplish its purpose. I laughed, I cried, I was filled with the mad desire to dress up in six inch heels, a conspicuous feather boa and reclaim my womanhood with a terrible southern accent. It was cute, it was charming, and most importantly,...more

What happens when a group of women all named Tammy get together with their fearless ringleader, Jill, and strut down the road in the middle of Jackson, Mississippi wearing green sequined dresses and pink majorette boots during the annual St. Patrick's Day parade? Oh, I'd say a mild case of hysteria at best....
They're called The Sweet Potato Queens and every one wants to be one. Founder of the Queens and author of this book, Jill Conner Browne has given us much insight into the wacky world of Swe...more

I listened to this on tape and laughed out loud. She is so irreverent and funny. I guess it's a southern thang.--hr

Grab your Fat Mama's Knock You Naked Margarita mix, a bag of Fritos, a pan of Chocolate Stuff and turn off the phone, because Browne is back with a sassy and hilarious sequel to 1999's The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love, and you're not going to want any interruptions. Browne and her co-Queens (all named Tammy to protect their privacy) are back with more ou...more

As usual, I listened to this book (rather than read it). It was read by the author and I think that adds a lot to the enjoyment of the book. Jill Conner Browne has a bit of a Southern accent and the way she reads some of the passages in the books is laugh out loud funny.

Yes, there are some bawdy places in the book. However, since I was listening to it on a long road trip to Denver it was just perfect for breaking the monotony.

No, it's not great literature.

It's just good fun.

This was just okay for me, mildly amusing in places but never outright hysterically funny. I listened to the audio version while out on my walks and enjoyed the author's reading of it. I can't get enough of Southern stories and charm so maybe this is why I was initially drawn to this. I wish that I had known years ago that basically all you need to do well in life is a title, a tiara, and a sassy attitude. Would have saved a lot of time :)
Not a complete waste but I won't be pursuing any more of...more

Also excellent. Also a must read. It's just that nothing beats the real thing. I loved the fact that at the end, there is a wonderful, sentimental, and beautifully written tribute of sorts that ties all the silliness of the two books together and puts everything into perspective. Like it isn't ALL just a bunch of nonsense.

Didn´t work for me. A lot of the talk of being such liberated women to me just reinforced stereotypes about women- like marrying an old unhealthy but rich man who will die soon, cooking a fattening casserole for him to speed up the process but never have to go t jail etc. I give it two stars because at times, passages were amusing, but overall, I thought it just didn´t work for me!

This is the second in the Sweet Potato Queen series, and the third I've read. If I'd read this one first I wouldn't have gone farther. (I've previously read #3 and #1.) There are some giggles (and no recipes worth a second look), but mostly it seemed to be straining too hard to be funny. Or maybe I just wasn't in the mood.

Listened to this on CD which is the only way to go with her books. I actually made "Death Chicken" the other night and won't do it again . . . don't think it was meant to go with brown rice as the rice did not cook. Also the whole thing was swimming in grease from the bacon. I will say that the chicken had a great flavor though!

Very fun book to read - resulted in a fun book club meeting too. Loved the recipes in the back. One of my friends who read this book has joined her local chapter of the Sweet Potato Queens. She has a blast and they do a lot of charity work at the same time!!

The friend who gave this to me thought it hysterically funny. I'm afraid that I didn't find the original Sweet Potato Queen book as hilarious as she did, and that I prefer my sweet potatoes to be of the baked or roasted sort.

This book made me LAUGH MY ASS OFF. It is the second in the series, but I left the first one on my desk at work by accident. I am STILL laughing and I finished it several hours ago. I could be laughing for days.

How can anyone not like this book? It's downright funny and Jill Conner Browne is so right when she says, "eventually everything in the South gets deep fried." You know that's right!
Tami
This book is so fun. You have to have a certain sense of humor to enjoy these books. Being southern wouldn't hurt either, but isn't a requirement. I absolutely love these books!
Marjorie
awesomely funny lady - if the voice inside my head had a southern accent, it would sound like Ms. Browne's books - or what I would LIKE the voice in my head to sound like.
Holyn
Yet another laugh out loud funny installment from the SPQs about life and love - and hair bows! For a look at life from the sweet Southern side of life, pick up this book.
Jeri
Didn't finish this book...just couldn't seem to get into it. Read The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love several years ago. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood...

This stuff is just HILARIOUS! I got a lot of strange looks listening to this on my commute to work. It was hard not to drive off the road.
Joan
Some clever passages scattered throughout. I loved the part that assured me that many other wives have to wear a coat in the house during the air-conditioned days of summer!
Beth
Five stars due to the fact that it hit the spot. Light, entertaining, laugh out loud (many times) and spot on with most if not all of her insights.
Kristen Lamb
I love all of Jill Conner Browne's book. This book is laugh out loud hysterical and even my male relatives and friends loved it.

I have taken quite a shine to Jill Connor Brown. I would definitely suggest her books to anyone looking for a good time and fatty food (Mmmmm Mmmmm, bacon!).

Kimberly
Another good read - not a lot different from the first, but full of more humerous stories and great recipes.
Leigh
The entire sweet potato queen series makes you laugh out loud! You will love these ladies.
Jen
Definitely not as good as the 1st book. It seemed a bit self-important.
Tessa Gauzy
This is a great book, I will probably appriciate more when I'm older. I need to read the others.
Patan
Very southern with some laugh out loud moments. Totally shallow but cute.
Susanne
This is a fun easy read and it is hysterical! I honestly cried laughing
