Kids will actually put down that DS - this one is perfect for road trips, waiting rooms and boring grown-up restaurants.

Book Talk - Look! A Book! A Zany Seek-and-Find Adventure

What’s your favorite mode of transportation? How will you travel through the pages of this book’s crazy and wild adventure worlds? First you’ll turn the page where you’ll decide what vehicle you’ll ride…Will you fly a helicopter, spaceship, or a plane? Maybe you will board a boat, hot air balloon, or train. Perhaps you’ll settle for a car, or drive a truck, or dare to take the flying bicycle and jet-ski contraption. Hurry up! You’d better p...more

I might be slightly over-rating this book, but it's all good. It's a really fun book with amazing art.

In essence, Look! A Book! is akin to books like Where's Waldo and the popular "hidden objects" video games. There are a number of scenes in the book (underwater, haunted house, robot factory) and readers are instructed to look for certain objects in each scene. In a city with a happily rampaging dinosaur and elephant, for instance, you have to look for a vampire.

The artwork is so colorful and a...more

Love this book!
It's a great read for someone who loves to find things and sharpen their eyes!

Kids will love hunting for things,
and seeing the little die cut windows showcasing things they may have missed.

I really loved that when you got to the end there was a whole 'nother challenge and list of things to find,
though I wasn't entirely surprised; I was noticing how many books and pieces of pizza were in the illustrations the whole time!

And the illustrations are marvelous!

A really fun seek-and-find book. I haven't looked at Staake's other work but this is certainly enough to make me want to read more! In this 'zany seek-and-find adventure,' rhyming clues tell you what to find. And when you finish, another list sets you off to hunt through the pictures again. Definitely more fun than Waldo, this is sure to be a hit with lots of readers.

As with any interactive book, the biggest issue with this one is simply wear and tear. The pages are nice and heavy but between cu...more

There are lots of look-and-find books out there. Where's Waldo, I Spy, What Do You See?...just to name a few prolific series. Look! A Book! accomplishes more or less the same thing, but with a lot more flare. Busy illustrations invite kids to look closely to find the hidden items. But there's something about the the whimsical nature of the rhyming prose that makes this book superior. I also like how a few objects are specifically pointed out through the die cuts in the pages before the author as...more

"Not a lot of words to read -- the pictures here are all you need."

I am not a fan of Look-for-this-in-the-Picture books. Where's Waldo? Who cares? He's a big boy. He can find his own self.

But this one was different. The pages alternate between the big, beautiful, fun pictures and each one has peep holes both before and after them to point out little details.

"A bowl! A troll! A barber pole!" or
"A ham! A clam! And Uncle Sam!"

When John was little, he and I would have sat and looked at this for a lo...more

This is a fantastic book for kids! Not only are the pictures great and pages fun to look through, but Bob incorporates rhyming words and easy to read words, making this a book that K and 1st graders can read.

This book is one the whole family and/or the whole class can enjoy. One top of trying to find what is mentioned on each page, Bob has hidden things on each page that readers have to find, from baseballs to pineapples, red books and a lot more.

This is one book I definitely one I recommend p...more

This book reminded me a bit of the I Spy series by Marzollo and Wick, although for a younger audience. Pages with cut-out circular windows reveal objects; turn the page, and a full 2-page spread follows. Rhymes describe one object that must be found within each 2-page picture. The illustrations are colorful, packed with interesting things to look at, and just difficult enough for a lower elementary school child looking for the sought-after object. At the end is a surprise flap revealing more obj...more

This a wonderful book in the same family as the popular "I Spy" books. What I like about this one is that it is really great for younger kids. Each page is filled with really wonderful illustrations that young kids will revel in. I also love that at the end, there is still more fun to be had if you dive right back in.

I think that parents looking for something fun with young kids will enjoy picking this one up to share together!

Staake's amazing illustrations put this book at the head of the pack of I-Spy-style picture books. With retro, Jetson-like images and well crafted rhyming verse, Staake encourages kids to find all sorts of different objects in his detailed art. This is the perfect choice for kids who haven't yet found the I Spy and Spot 7 books, or for the kid who has already burned through all of them.
Sarah
Gorgeous illustrations with cut outs to hint at what's on the next page. Every other spread is a seak and find adventure. It's an I Spy without all of the tackiness. A rare combination of artistically masterful illustrations and high interest for young readers - a definite must for any collection.

If you throw an I Spy, a Where’s Waldo, and a fiction picture book into your children’s lit blend-o-matic and hit puree, what you get is Look! A Book! – pure entertainment in printed form. The spreads alternate between rhyming text set against bold colors and incredible seek and find illustrations. The conclusion of the book lists many more objects to go back and locate, ensuring hours of happy hunting. Staake’s bright, abstract style has never been more detailed, with wildly creative results. Huge book with bright colors that has students finding things. It's rhyming and has simple language. I would use this as a center in which the students are trying to look for various things. I would have students also look at similar books and create their own finding book.

My boys, ages 3 & 5, LOVED reading this book this afternoon! Very similar to an I Spy book, the cutouts invite kids to look closer into the pictures to spy other things! We were inventing our own things to spy as the pictures are so detailed! What a fun read!

Looking for a good seek and find book? You found it. This will keep your child entertained for quite some time. A great book to have when you are going out to eat or on a plane flight. Have fun "looking" at and for all the weird and creative illustrations.
Agnes
This treasure hunt "look closer" book engages a young reader to look for details in a big picture of a wild and wacky world full of animals, clowns and kids. The color scheme and cutout peek-a-boo design works well with the sparse but fun rhyming text.
Shelley
I really liked how the rhymes and the die cuts draw your attention to some creative details in the very intricate pictures. Robbie and I both loved this book. We kept it the full 3 weeks allowed by the library, read it often, and I wasn't sick of it!
paula
But hold on a second. Not so fast. Don't take this personally, but I think there are a few things that you forgot to put into your complicated colorful scene. Do you have a dog mowing the lawn? A horse in a hot tub? A Fighting Irish football helmet? The 'A' train? Paul Bunyan? Donuts? Oh I'm sorry - of course you have donuts.

I enjoy this book as an addition to the "I Spy" genre. There's really great rhymes, cut outs, and fun illustrations that will interest readers, and something new for those parents who have picked up I Spy and Where's Waldo for the 100 time

An I Spy sort of adventure combined with an early reader and rhyming text. Fun, fun, fun.

Every other seek and find book you've ever seen absolutely pales in comparison. Waldo and I Spy blush in shame when they see this book on the shelf. Brilliant, awesome illustrations, just-hard-enough-to-find items, and a surprise ending.
Sandy
First of a series, this is a bundle of benefits for a "search" book: rhyming verse, exotic words along with common returns and concepts, oversized format, cut-out shapes, vibrant color, and comical images.
The Library Lady
I really like Bob Staake's other books. And this is head and shoulders above "Where's Waldo?" crap. But the die cuts and fold outs are going to make this a very short lived book in any library, or at home.

"Not a lot of words to read -- the pictures here are all you need!"

Great pictures and the words are fun. I can see opening this book again and again and finding new things every time.
Jodi
One of the best children's books I have seen in a while. A huge improvement over I Spy books, with quirky illustrations and fun cut outs. Sure to be poured over by giggling children.
Danelle
Just an awesome 'I Spy' type of book. The kids love it and the illustrations are wonderfully done. We checked this out from the library but I will be buying a copy to keep.

This is a fun eye-spy-type of book. I really enjoyed looking for all the little random things mentioned. This book is one that readers will look at again and again.
Alexa
I just loved this book. It was like I Spy, but less irritating and way more exciting. Loved the rhymes and the surprises. It was so fun to read.
