Oh wow, Sharon and Steve really come through with this doubly entwined story. This is a sequel to Fledgling and Saltation as well as I Dare.
Theo has shown up on Liad, right before Clan Korval is moving house, stock and Tree, to Surebleak. She's hunting for her father, because "it's complicated' and finds waaaay more than she was looking for.
I truly do not know how much sense this book will make to any reader who is unfamiliar with the whole Lianden Universe. In other words, this is NOT the place...more

In this book we take up the story where 'Saltation' and 'I Dare' left off. A lot of story lines converge and then diverge again. I really enjoyed the aspect of the story that a sentient ship was skulking around in space trying to engineer a meeting with the person it thought was supposed to be its captain. Theo Waitley continues to grow as a character and get somewhat involved with her new clan. There are a lot of loose ends with respect to Kamele, Win Ton, Bechimo and Theo, Uncl...more

A new Liaden Universe novel is cause for rejoicing. At long last, we find out what happened after I DARE and SALTATION. Theo Waitley’s life may have long stretches of peace connected to it, because she’s a commercial pilot, a long-hauler who works alone. But she’s also a child of house Korval, and scarcely knows what that means. She has been linked through no fault of her own to an ancient self-willed ship – technology that is banned on some worlds, where on other worlds people will kill you for...more

I loved this, and thought it was some of Lee & Miller's best work. They continue to improve, so I'm hoping for many, many more books (long or short) from them. That said, this one wouldn't be entirely clear to someone who hasn't read other Liaden books by them. I think it was very smart strategy to try to make a new on-ramp, especially for YA readers, with Theo's story. Unfortunately, as much as I've liked Theo's stories they weren't sufficiently carefully explained in order to really be the...more

Ghost Ship is two books-in-one. I can make a case for it being two-and-a-half or even three books-in-one, each of them a gem. Let me explain.

This is a stand alone story in the greater world of the Liaden UniverseTM, although those who start their journey here will take some time to figure things out. There are a lot of things packed into this book: star travel, family, adventure, relationships, parties, “Bosses”, pilots, juntavas, scouts, 8-foot-tall clutch turtles, scholars, scholarly research,...more

As the unification of the I Dare plotline and the Saltation plotline, as well as two short stories, Ghost Ship was an encore performance for every speaking member of Clan Korval. I mean all of them, from Lukin to Padi. Because of the effort to get everyone in on the action and move forward on the main plot lines, the story read like the middle of an 80's space opera trilogy. You know, that's the book where everyone is scattered to the far ends of known space, everything is going wrong, and the b...more

An ARC is an uncorrected advanced reader copy sent out to people who will recommend the book. An ARC from Baen is a little different. When Baen has a book everyone is waiting for they will offer the ARC as an ebook priced at $15.00. It is a good deal for the author and the publisher, and fills a need for those of us who can’t for the final copy of the book to be released. To make it an even better deal for the author and publisher most of us buy a paper copy of the book when it is finally releas...more

This was exactly what fans of Liaden hoped for - the continuation of Theo's and Daav's storyline, with a bit of Miri and Val Con (view spoiler)[(and the birth of their child) (hide spoiler)] thrown in. Miri and Val Con's storyline got picked up from one of the shorter Tales of the Liaden Universe (but the viewpoint of Val Con for that part of the story wasn't repeated so it's not as if that was a problem for people who had read that story before), and otherwise Clan Korval is shown settling on S...more

I knew I'd be giving this a great rating when I was A) eager to get back to it, and B) actually lost in the story. I've always loved Lee and Miller, but there have been books in which I felt they either lost their focus or dealt lightly with something that I felt deserved more time. This one, even though it follows multiple storylines and a cast of characters, doesn't suffer from those flaws.

This is an awesome addition to the Liaden universe! I should almost just give it five stars, except that...more

I enjoyed reading this novel, but only because I'm already "in the world". As a standalone novel, it was unsatisfying. At this point in this series, Lee & Miller have a lot of characters and several plots going. Instead of focusing on one of these, they kept jumping around, and left many ends dangling. A good novel needs a main plot to hold it together, and the main plot needs to come to at least a stopping point. In this book, many things happened, and all the plots and characters advanced,...more

We finally begin the story of the complicated problem Theo brought to the Delm of Korval at the end of I Dare. Fledgling and Saltation have been getting us caught up on how Theo came to have a complicated problem to begin with and now this book reintegrates these story lines with Clan Korval as a whole. The Liaden series has long been one of my absolute favorite things to read. This book was no exception. [return][return]Here are some of the things I loved about it. Possible SPOILERS. I loved this! Not only is this the third book featuring Theo Waitley, this comes back to the main line of the series and we *finally* get to find out what happens after I Dare.

This kicks off with Theo meeting Delm Korval, discovering her missing father is already there, learning some of his secrets and discovering she has a whole bunch of relatives she never knew about.

Then Val Con & Miri try to guide her in the two remaining problems - how to save Win Ton's life, and what to do about the se...more

(contains spoilers!) This is a wonderful continuation of the series BUT. It covers a lot of ground - too lightly - and I do so love Liaden books because of the depth and lyricism of the language and plot investigations. I do have fun with the half of the book which continues Theo's story. But I want to see how Pat Rin feels about the tree landing on his planet; how it's changed his life - I want to know how Cheever's doing - I want to spend a few eternal moments relaxing with Shan - I want to sp...more

Finally the book I've been waiting nearly 10 years for. Picks up where I Dare leaves off. The other two books that caught Theo up to this point were not the best even though they might have been necessary. Although I debate that since they could have been condensed I think into at least one book. Well anyway finally we get back to Korval and ships. There was plenty of space opera action here and we got to see the settling of Clan Korval onto Surebleak. It was wonderful to see most of my old favo...more

I really like Lee and Miller's Liaden books, and this one was a worthy addition to the series and a great deal of fun, even if Theo Waitley is likely to never be my favorite character in the series -- too much excellent competition. If this were just a Theo Waitley story (like Saltation, say), I'd probably give it three stars. But I enjoyed the book most for bringing together half a dozen different story lines from several books into something really new. Of course, this same feature means that...more

Fab-YOU-LOUS!!!! For anyone who has been reading the Liaden Universe books, this is a MUST HAVE NOW book! The only down side is that the next book isn't finished yet, because the storyline has only gotten MORE interesting! If I have to find a complaint, I guess it would be that Theo has become the one carrying the stories forward, leaving some of my favorite people more as "also featuring" actors, when I really want more of their stories. But Theo Waitley, designated a "Nexus of Violence" by one...more

The first hundred pages or so were sufficiently boring that I almost aborted the read. Then it got going and was the usual fun rollicking adventure you'd expect from this series. Still, this was not nearly as compelling as some of the earlier books I've read from this series. Maybe part of it is that I don't know all the backstory because I haven't read them in order. Still, I'd much much more highly recommend some of the earlier books here (in particular the three that are collected into Partne...more

Another Liaden book, in a rather scattershot narrative style. POV characters include Theo, Miri, Daav, McFarland, some bad guys, a sentient ship, and some others. The jumps forward in time (narratively, not actual time travel) were disconcerting. I'm not sure what to make out of this book, it seems more like a placeholder, getting people to places they may need to be in terms of plot (except for the bits where Miri and Val argue about him being overprotective). At some point we'll have to find o...more

Theo Waitley is getting even deeper in the convoluted machinations resulting from her relationship to the Korval clan. Her ship Bechimo is impatient to form a bond with its new captain and her missions for Uncle are getting even more fraught with problems. The entire clan has had to relocate to an entirely new planet. A great addition to the series which demonstrates the remarkable abilities of several of the members of Theo's extended family even as Theo keeps stretching herself to adapt to the...more

Theo finally gets aboard Bechimo, acquires a copilot, begins a commercial cargo/trading run and also begins developing a relationship with an AI that is pretty paranoid and cranky. As in previous volumes, though the pacing is a bit slow--what with too many and too frequent cuts to multiple plotlines and points of view--the characters and particularly the cultures in which they are embedded show real richness. Good stuff, though, and I'll continue to read in the series, hoping to see more action...more

Theo Waitley has met her father's Clan and been Seen by the Delm of Korval now, at the end of both I Dare and Saltation (Theo Waitley, #2). She does not, however, consider herself of Korval — she is a Waitley, as is reasonable for a young woman raised in a matrilineal culture. She did, however, take two issues to the Delm for solving, and one has been resolved: she has been reunited with her missing father.

However, she also carries the Captain's key to the sentient ship Bechimo, and that ship is...more

I have got to tell you about this great book I just finished reading. Which also means telling you about a lot of other books by the same authors. The book is Ghost Ship by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, and it is the third book in one series and the 8th book in another series, and… it’s kind of complicated.

Ghost Ship is the sequel to Fledgling, and Saltation, and it continues the story of Theo Waitley, young Jump Pilot, Starship Courier, as she finds herself with a rather tangled problem. Theo ha...more

I couldn't wait to get my hands on the latest of the Liaden books. And apart from there being one too many character POVs within a single chapter, my anticipation was justified - I really enjoyed this one.

It was satisfying revisiting my favourite characters, but just as good was the fact that we finally moved forward in the overall story arc - it was way past time to find out what happened next! I Dare with Pat Rin and his Surebleak adventure was one of my favourite books, and so I really liked...more

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had read "Plan B" immediately before it. Because this book is following Theo Waitley (primarily), and opens right after the ending of the last book about Theo (Saltation (Theo Waitley, #2)), my assumption was that it stood alone, like the other Theo books. This is not the case however. You'll meet pretty much all of the main Liadan characters (except for most of the dead ones, like Shan's parents). That's Kareen, Shan, Miri, Val Con, Pat Rin, Daav, etc...more

Genre: Science Fiction (space opera)

This felt like an interim installment in the Liaden series – progress is made on a number of fronts but nothing is concluded. First, Theo does finally meet up with the ghost ship, Bechimo, but Bechimo himself still remains something of a mystery. Second, Theo does finally meet her Liadian family, and we get to watch them settle into Surebleak a little bit, but nothing is resolved regarding Theo’s relationship to Korval. Thirdly, the plots of the department of...more

Short Review: This is book 3 of the sub-series and book 14 of the overall series. So unless you have invested in the series already you are probably not interested. This book, even more than the last, is really pulling together the threads of the previously books in the series. All of Clan Korval are together because the Clan has relocated from Liad to Surebleak. Theo is trying to find herself in the clan.

A science fiction/space opera novel about family, fighting to defend yourself, and trust. There is a varied cast of familiar characters, a wonderful, slightly frustrating return to the Liaden Universe. The plot is like a series of interesting, character-driven interludes, with a hurried ending that seems to have some gaps. Theo lacks the humor and liveliness we saw in "Fledgeling" and I expected 'Bechimo' to play a larger, more active role.

The Liaden Universe series is one of my favorite series. You really should start with book 1, Agent of Change, in order to appreciate Ghost Ship.

You follow the adventures of the Korval clan, through spaceships, other planets, an intergalactic mafia, alien turtles, and the elaborate manners their society demands. The writing is amazingly vivid, and the action is non stop. Throw in a dash of humor and mortal peril and you understand what the series is about. If you have not read the Liaden Univer...more

Lee & Miller and the Liaden universe are still a winning combination, but the book felt a little disjointed as some events that encompassed days (the exchange between Theo & Uncle took 6 days and encompassed 100 some pages) and cleaning up the DoI on Vander took 2 pages and must have encompassed months if not more. Still excited to have a new book and looking forward to more.

I love Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's Liaden universe stories. I eagerly await each one. This is world building at its finest and I have days when I wish they would work faster. Ghost Ship is excellent. If I have one complaint, I would have liked to spend more time with Theo as she establishes her relationship with her ship. As much as I love all the characters, Theo's Ghost Ship is becoming one of the most interesting.
