Very much enjoyed this book. It was a memoir, but it was also a guidebook from a 40 year history of higher education leadership. In conjunction with Birnabaum's How Academic Leadership Works, one can clearly see the characteristics of excellent leadership in higher education and where mediocrity rules. Highly recommend to all who enjoy memoirs and are interested in higher education.
"Bowen was President of Princeton when I was a student there in the 1980s and so this book is interesting to me on many levels. Bowen is a noted scholar of labor economics and higher education and his insights on higher education are tremendous. Even more interesting are his reflections on his service as Provost and President of Princeton, most particularly the lessons he learned.
