3.5 stars. Good, but very slow-moving read (not sure why)--at times reading was like pulling teeth. Story idea is interesting, and vampire mythology has some novel elements. I liked the spiritual aspects. Some things about Cheryl I didn't like that much, but overall she was a good heroine. The Rev character rocked (kind of made me think of another Rehv I know and love)! I liked how detailed the aspects of navigating the Dallas metroplex were (I knew a lot of the neighborhoods and streets).

I just finished reading Spiral X by J.J. Westendarp and am at a slight loss for words that can explain how much I enjoyed reading this book. From the moment I began reading it, I was instantly pulled in and held captive in the world that Mr. Westendarp has created. Spiral X has all of the qualities that make it a must read book. The main character, Cheryl, is everything I expect to find when reading about a woman vampire hunter. She is strong, confident, and can take care of herself in any situa ...more

SUMMARY (from Goodreads):

THOUGHTS/OPINION:
I am kind of mixed on this book. Half of me likes it while the other half didn’t. This book feels like a bag of contradictions. One moment Cheryl is all bad ass the next she isn’t. At the beginning there was no mention of her psychic abilities and yet they all the sudden appear in the middle

Spiral X is not your typical vampire story. I was thrilled to dive into a book where the vampires weren't civilized. The vampires Cheryl hunts are downright evil and they are part of a nasty drug operation in Dallas/Fort Worth.

This book was very fast paced and Cheryl felt like a more grown up, ass kicking Buffy, with a touch of the characters from Demons. She's a hunter, but I kept thinking, she's smiting those vamps! She was totally bad ass. There's no other way to describe her and so are most

Cheryl is a Hunter. A Vampire Hunter. Not only that, but she's so good at what she does that the Underworld has a contract out on her. She has the best percentage of Vampire kills in any district and, if that weren't enough, she's about to become drawn into a big, secretive drug deal that has the ability to change the world as she knows it. Not only does Plast have a detrimental and violent effect on humans, it's central to a heinous plan to create a new breed of Vampire that won't succumb to th ...more

Spiral X is a very well written story in the vampire hunter genre. The vamps in question are not sparkly little boyfriend types but instead blood drinkers bent on re-asserting their position at the top of the food chain. In a slightly different twist from the normal undead vamps that we are used to, this version of a vampire is possessed of a demonic spirit which entered the victims near/at death, otherwise they are very like the typical evil vamps of literature.

Cheryl Erikson is the main vampir

I enjoyed Spiral X quite a bit, which was surprising because I've read my fill of female vampire hunters over the past few years. It is obvious that there is more intended for the main character, Cheryl, so some things are left unexplained as is typical with a continuing series. The story itself is self-contained and resolves itself nicely, so the larger mysteries are the "hook" to get people to read more books. Even without that, however, I'd say that the world created is interesting enough tha ...more

I absolutely loved this book. It was action packed and I was totally blown away by how focused I became on the plot. I actually had to read it twice because the first time I read it, I practically devoured it while trying to figure out what happens next, and of course, I completely forgot to take notes so I could write a good review.
I love Cheryl, she is such a great strong female character. She totally kicks butt. A lot of times in paranormal books, the female character keeps getting put into s

Spiral X by J. J. Westendarp is a great read. I began reading this book with mixed feelings and the slow start wasn't a good sign. However, once the pace picked up so did my interest. This story is engaging, the characters are well developed and this book is just a great addition to the urban fantasy genre. I also wanted to point out that the author is male! A rarity in this genre but what's even more unusual is that the novel is good! I haven't come across many of these gems in my reading. That ...more

For those who know me by know I love my vampire's and so when I had the chance to read this one I eagerly accepted. What I found though was not the typical Vamp story I am used too. For one I admit I haven't read too many female vampire hunters, yes I watched Buffy but haven't read too many not yet anyway.

I found I really liked Cheryl, tough and badass while hunting but still has compassion for the humans that find themselves enthralled by the vampires. I also like the fact she began to question

This is a paranormal book just the way I like it. I find a book perfect for me when I can’t stop reading it, and that is what happened to me with Spiral X.

Cheryl is a vampire and demon hunter. She is great, trained by the best, commited till the end with this lifestyle. She doesn’t have a job, but she has money because someone runs a business for her, and her best friend, Virgil, has her back all the times. But in the hunter business, things

22-year-old Cheryl Erickson is a Vampire Hunter with some serious attitude. She’s considered such a nuisance to the vamp community that there’s a bounty out on her life. While she’s trying to keep herself alive, she is also investigating a new drug called Plast that has hit the streets of Dallas. Normally she’d stay out of it, but since vampires are involved distributing it to the humans, Cheryl makes it her mission to put an end to its circ

Like the majority of readers, I am drawn to vampire related stories. Most of the vampire stories I read have a human love interest for the main vampire. While a story about a dark and dangerous vampire becoming romantically involved with an unsure and hesitantly willing human is interesting, it can sometimes become a little boring.

This story was not like that at all. First of all, the kickin'-butt takin'-names main character was a non-vampiric female. I enjoyed this fact. She had male sidekicks,

Cheryl is a Hunter with a great reputation and hard ass attitude. When a new drug was circulated in her territory she goes on a hunt to learn about the harmful drug that doesn't only affect humans but makes them more dangerous than vampires.

Spiral X is like taking Buffy's (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) character infused with Blade's bad ass attitude. Spiral X was surprisingly good and a fast read. I have read a lot of female heroines or female vampire hunters but Cheryl's character felt fresh. She i

Ok guys I was ecstatic to be asked to review this book. I love almost anything paranormal and was not disappointed with this book. From the start I was sucked in, for one reason the main character is female. I wanna be like Cheryl when I grow up! Seriously! This is not your typical vampire, hunter book. With it's twists and turns and OMG no way's it keeps you on the edge of your seat reading as fast as you can to find out what happens next. Spiral X takes the reader back to the time when vampires weren't the good guys. This is deep, dark and gritty. It is action packed, very well-written and the detail is immense.

The main character in this is Cheryl Erikson, who became a Hunter when her father was murdered. She has no need to work as she is the figurehead president of her father's company. She is also "one of the boys", no glitzy pink nail varnish for this tough cookie, although she has a vulnerable side that makes her altogether

Never has a book deserved the words "action packed" more! What a roller-coaster of events!

What I enjoyed about this novel was the fact that it played in my head like a movie. The characters were believable, mythology understandable and there were twists and turns around every corner.

The Author being male only helped this novel. He made fight scenes and car chasing scenes believable and understandable. How many times have I read a fight scene where you are not sure what is happening an

I haven’t really read a lot of the paranormal genre however I loved this book. It was so fast paced that I was gripped reading faster that I probably should off to find out what was going to happen next.

One moment I would think I knew what was going to happen next then I would turn the page and be shocked by another twist. This book definitely keeps you on your toes. The characters are so well developed and each character has a specific role to play in the novel. The author skills shine through

The main lead character, Cheryl Erickson is a vampire hunter. She's a strong and confident vampire hunter. She's good at what she does but she can also be "soft" when it comes to her family and friends. I liked her character. I also liked that she has a lot of friends with her, especially Tank. I really enjoyed the time when Cheryl is with her fellow hunter, Tank. I loved it when they're together! Awww - why not Mr. Westendarp? Sorry spoiler :)

I liked the plot and the twist in the story - I def

Can I get more please? Spiral X by J.J. Westendarp just fell into my lap (gotta love Library Thing) and I'm glad it did. This was a fast paced thrill ride from beginning to end. Cheryl Erikson is a 22 year old Vampire Hunter in Dallas, Texas. Not only is she a hunter, she's a psychic and can sense when vampires are around. Throughout the story, she is trying to get rid of the vampire population and a drug called Plast which is making them stronger and harder to kill. With the help of Cheryl's si ...more

Spiral X is reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Cheryl Erikson, this story's vampire and demon hunter, takes on the shadowy underworld that most people never know exists. To add to Cheryl's problems, there is a new drug called Plast flooding her city and the vampires are in charge.

For me, the similarities to Buffy were a little too close. Both are young, beautiful, tough women with boyfriend issues and only a few close friends they trust. The plot had no big surprises and at times things f

Recommends it for: Undemanding readers looking for a fast-paced vampire-hunter action novel without romance
It's got great ingredients for an entertaining read - a feisty, sexy heroine, demonic vampires (with another twist on the vampire mythos), a relentless pace and loads of action - but it just didn't work for me. I didn't like Cheryl, the writing got on my nerves, and it has a strong Christian theme which didn't bother me too much but did nothing to win my favour. On the positive side, the plot is serious, and not just a front for a supernatural love triangle, which seems to have become the cliche ...more

I haven't read many slayer books so I may not be the best judge, but I loved this book. Cheryl is so badass! I loved every second of the fast paced story. This is an indie book, but it didn't read like one. I didn't find any glaring spelling or grammar mistakes. This is a high quality book. I highly recommend Spiral X to anyone who likes Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I liked this more than I thought I would. Which is mostly due to vampire burn-out. It turns out if I space them out (reading that is) I can take them much better, especially if they have some imagination to them. The heroine is seriously kick-ass and likable, and the vampires are actual vampires, at least what we always thought them to be. ...more

I liked the story, but a few items were not really clear and I had to read back a few pages to figure them out. The main character is very Buffy like and I like the idea of a tough female lead. Not a bad story, but I found my self putting the book down more often then not. I plowed through it last night and I did like it over all.
