The story of King Arthur's boyhood and his education by Merlyn the wizard, who usually takes a very practical approach to teaching. Wart is transformed into a fish, a falcon, a tree and a badger amongst other things and has a variety of other adventures. It absolutely enchanted me when I was a child, the sheer force of imagination is wonderful, definitely on a par with Alice's Adventures in Wonderland or any other children's...more

Oof - how to say anything sensible about this book! I remember reading it while ill (and being given milk-toast - something I'd read about in children's books, and found dreadfully disappointing - just soggy toast covered with hot milk?) when I was about 10 or 11 and I loved it. But I clearly didn't remember it at all, as I only remembered the being a fish bit from the film (and dimly, at that) and had no memory of the Wart's being turned into a falcon or the lengthy digressions about f...more

This is the first part of the larger book called The Once & Future King. It's the fun King Arthur as Young Wart, Pupil of Merlin section of the tale. I got this from the Friends of The Library book sale: pristine condition. I'd never seen it as a stand-alone book before. I'm so glad I got it because there are major variations from the larger book. Missing = Wart visits ant colony, Wart travels with geese, Morgan Le Fay's castle of "marvelous pork." Added = Wart and Kay captured by...more

Awesome story. It is the first part of the "Once and Future King." Everyone knows this story thanks to Walt Disney. The book is a fascinating mixture of modern and medival. It has King Arthur, Robin Wood (a.k.a. Robin Hood), Merlin, giants, witches, and more.

Love to teach this contrasted with Macbeth! (Two individuals' very different rise to kingship.)
Too, students enjoy Wart's different adventures and can identify with the vicissitudes that take place in his childhood. It's a great start to an amazing compilation! (The Once and Future King)

The Disney movie is only about the first twenty pages of this book...and not really because they changed all the characters. This book is sweet, intelligent, funny, and endearing.

I'm always impressed by White's vast knowledge of things from falconry to chivalry to WWII. His playful meandering reminds me a bit of J. M. Barrie, but with an edge.

Okay, this is also a very good book. It makes a good read for kids interested in fantasy, but it has a lot more depth than your normal read. Very, very good.

Read this at junior school and it left a deep impression on me. Re-read as a 37 year old and loved it just as much.
