Anche le librerie sono soggette alla moda: ultimamente vanno la cucina, che un po' è un evergreen soprattutto in Italia, i segreti, i libri misteriosi. Amore zucchero e cannella di Amy Bratley è un romanzo che non riesce ad affascinare. La sua protagonista, Juliet, è una ragazza di neanche venticinque anni che pensa e si atteggia come una donna anziana, di quella tipologia fastidiosa che alterna il vittimismo, al catastrofismo, al puritanesimo.

Ha ancora tutta una vita davanti, ma il suo obiettivo è sposarsi il prima possibile e per cercare di dare forma al suo sogno decide di prendere in affitto un appartamento con Simon, il suo ragazzo. Nel volersi accasarsi presto non ci sarebbe nulla di male, ma avere il così detto “prosciutto sugli occhi”, sì. A Simon della vita di coppia non importa nulla, acconsente solamente per non sentire la sfiancate sequela di lamentele di Juliet, che ripete in continuazione che vuole il suo nido d’amore. Risultato: una casa ammobiliata, un ragazzo fedifrago e un cuore infranto.

Crollato il mondo, Juliet deve risorgere dalle sue ceneri, ma la protagonista di Amy Bratley è tutto tranne che un’araba fenice. Sente di fare una scelta sbagliata dietro l’altra, cova rancore per se stessa, per chi l’ha tradita e se si lascia un po’ andare (ubriacarsi e finire a letto con qualcuno) inizia a flagellarsi ripetendo instancabilmente “io non sono così”, “io non sono una rovina famiglie”.

A questi attacchi di puritanesimo, trova la risposta nel vecchio libro di sua nonna per diventare una massaia provetta e inizia a creare cose fatte in casa, precisamente dei grembiuli. Tra il desiderio di diventare un angelo del focolare moderno e il sentimento crescente per un nuovo love interest, l’autrice infila nella narrazione il mistero della famiglia di Juliet.

Un background disastrato, pieno di misteri. Eppure quello che dovrebbe essere il filo conduttore, la ricerca che si dipana per tutto il romanzo, appare solo a sprazzi senza suscitare alcun fascino. Il risultato è un libro che non intrattiene il lettore, il quale alla fine si stanca degli isterismi della protagonista che a fatica sente vicina.

Le tematiche affrontate sarebbero anche piacevoli, ma Amy Bratley intesse con fatica un romanzo che mostra in tutto e per tutto la sua acerbezza come scrittrice. Magari nelle sue prossime opere avrà modo di crescere, magari saprà approfondire maggiormente i suoi personaggi che ora risultano ritagliati in modo troppo semplice, come delle figurine di carta.

A deludere il lettore che si avvicina al libro, poi, concorre anche il titolo. In Italia spesso e volentieri si traducono (molto) liberamente i titoli dei romanzi stranieri, ma questa volta si è osato troppo. The girls’ guide to homemaking, “La guida delle ragazze per fare cose fatte in casa”, è diventato qualcosa ti troppo distante dal testo e per niente calsante.
L’amore c’è, va bene, lo zucchero compare qua e là sottoforma di dolci, ma la cannella? Neanche l'ombra.

Questo libro fa venir fame. Possibile che non facciano altre che bere ( Juliet è costantemente ubriaca, inizio a pensare che l'autrice abbia seri problemi di alcolismo ) e mangiare? In mezzo al libro ad un certo punto c'è addirittura una ricetta ( che voglio provare ). I personaggi sono un pò stereotipati. Simon è sicuramente il peggiore di tutti, antipatico e egoista come pochi. I will be honest and say I was initially drawn to this book by its beautiful cover. It’s really different, quite old-fashioned looking but after reading it, it suits the book absolutely perfectly and makes it even more kitsch and charming! This book is author Amy Bratley’s debut, and while this is a somewhat overdone subject in chicklit – girl finds out boy is cheating on her, girl struggles to move on but does so and pursues new love – but Bratley dresses this up within a desire to create a real home, and all the things that go with that. I was utterly charmed by this book, and really enjoyed every single page, I found myself not wanting to put it down, even as the clock ticked on every night.

Juliet is the lead character and one I instantly adored. You can see that all she craves is a home, a stable home with someone who loves her and she thought she had that with her boyfriend Simon. When she finds out he’s been sleeping with their old flat-mate and Juliet’s best friend, she is of course heartbroken, and kicks him out. You can feel Juliet’s pain right from the off, and it was good to see a strong female character, one ready to kick out a cheating man and not accept his excuses. I loved Juliet as a character, and as the story progresses and we learn more about her, you can’t help but empathise and feel sorry for her.

Juliet was abandoned by her own mother after the death of her father, and soon it becomes clear why Juliet is so desperate to create a home for herself. As we grow up, we all want a nice home to live in, with nice things and homely bits and bobs around the place, but Juliet soon gives up on that hope once Simon leaves and lets her place turn to ruin – who wants to worry about washing floors and washing up when you’re heartbroken? This is exactly what I love about the book – it’s very real, all the emotion we get from Juliet feels very real and you can imagine yourself behaving the same as Juliet if you were ever unfortunate enough to find yourself in her position. I just wanted to give her a big hug!

There is an interesting subplot involving Juliet’s best friend Imogen and her fiancé Jonathan. This was quite a curveball in the book, it didn’t seem to fit in at all with the main plot of Juliet’s messed up love life and moving on from that, but at the same time it made for great reading because I was curious to see how it would pan out for Imogen. It was good to read a strong female friendship too after the dissolution of the one between Juliet and Hanna at the beginning, and it shows how a good friend will pick you up even when you’re at your lowest ebb. I really enjoyed it, it was well handled by the author, and while I was worried initially about how it would suit the book, it did so very well by the end and I felt like it definitely belonged.

As you can probably tell by my review so far, the book was a joy to read. Each of the chapters were begun with a quote from a homemaking book of yester-year, and these were charming little anecdotes. I loved how Juliet embraced the things her grandmother had written for her in her own homemaking book too, and Bratley describes the aprons, and sewing and other things Juliet creates so well, I could visualise in my mind what she was doing and the gorgeous 1950′s print aprons. Bratley has a way of drawing us into Juliet’s world so quickly and easily that you’re pulled into the book from the beginning, and are loathe to leave it until you turn the very last page. A very enjoyable and wonderful read.(less)

This is so terribly written and so cliched that I groaned all throughout reading it. I hated it. If I could have given it 0 stars, I would have. The only reason I forced myself to finish it is because I'm using it as an example of how chick-lit is anti-feminist for a university assignment and it fits the bill perfectly.

The author needs to learn how to 'show, not tell' and how to write without adverbs after every verb. You don't need to write 'she said coldly' or 'she stormed angrily' every sing...more

I had such high expectations for this book that perhaps I was bound for disappointment, but I find it so hard to be forgiving of a book with what should have been such a good concept that was let down with such awful characters.

THAT is the story I thought I was going to be reading, but what I ended up with was with a main character who had zero redeeming features (seriously - zero. She whined, moaned, cried, was hypocritical, was needy, was weak and actively encouraged infidelity after she already knew how much it hurt to be cheated on. But the thing with this book is that infidelity is bad when it's the guy who is cheating, but it's different for a woman (especially if its with another woman *rolleyes*) - did I mention hypocritical?

The male characters in the book with the exception of Dylan (who is infinitely too good for anyone in the book) are all shallow, oafish, idiots which is something I hate in the chick-lit genre. Just because I want a fun book that doesn't make me think so hard, it doesn't mean I need things to be so dumbed down - I don't need it hammered into my head how awful a guy is as a choice by making him a caricature and I certainly don't need the obvious pointed out. In fairness, the female characters in this aren't much better - Juliet's failings are obvious, but her friends and family aren't that much better. Flighty mother, kooky aunt, cheating best friend...in fact the only female character in the book that I cared much for was Hanna (the room-mate who slept with Simon), which I'm pretty sure wasn't the idea considering.

I wanted to love this book. I love vintage stuff, I love romance and Marilyn Monroe and I love mindless chicklit! But not when it's this mindless. Cheap dramatic tricks, the overall tone of hypocrisy by the author, the lack of a sympathetic 'heroine' and the fact that the only real home-making guide stuff we got was at the intro to each chapter. Sadly those excerpts of other peoples books were the most entertaining things about the book and that really makes me sad because as a premise, this should have been great but it was so badly let down in execution.(less)

La storia è raccontata in prima persona da Juliet, che in modo un po' confusionario racconta i fatti della sua vita attuale intervallati da ricordi del passato.
Ogni capitolo è presentato da consigli tratti da riviste o libri anni 50/60 per perfette casalinghe, consigli che spesso risultano come una forzatura, come a voler rimarcare l'importanza d'esser una buona moglie e una buona donna di casa.
I personaggi non sono ben delineati, restano comparse all'interno della vita della protagonista e spesso sono sempre ubriachi, come se ognuno di loro potesse ottenere o fare qualcosa solo ed unicamente in preda ai fumi dell'alcool. Andando avanti con la lettura ci si aspetta di veder crescere Juliet, di vederla evolversi: viene rimarcato più volte che vorrebbe una casa e fare la casalinga, ma per tutto il libro il suo appartamento viene descritto sempre in disordine, sporco e lei riesce solo a cucire grembiuli.
Per tutta la lettura ci si aspetta continuamente di avere qualche informazione in più sui vari protagonisti, poterli conoscere meglio, ma alla fine l'unica cosa che si impara a conoscere meglio è un libro di consigli per casalinghe.
Difficilmente il lettore si sente coinvolto nella narrazione, spesso la protagonista gli diviene insopportabile e l'attenzione tende spesso a calare.
La trama non è male, ma la Bratley non è riuscita ad approfondirla: da molti elementi su cui riflettere, ma non li sviluppa, la stessa storia d'amore è marginale, vissuta con indifferenza e pigrizia, i personaggi sono inconsistenti e molti degli avvenimenti vengono a volte buttati in mezzo alla narrazione, come a voler metter un po' di "pepe" al racconto, ma poi non vengono approfonditi e finiscono per esser dimenticati.
Lo stile della Bradley è comunque semplice e, nonostante non riesca a mantenere sempre alta l'attenzione del lettore, la lettura scorre veloce: nel complesso il libro è poco impegnativo, ma forse è stato caricato di troppe aspettative.

Perhaps if Juliet spent less time crying and bonking her boss then she might actually be able to sort her life out. Oh wait, hang on, it's chick lit so it's a god given that her life will miraculously sort itself out and she will end up living in a hipster flat in Hackney without a care in the world.

There's more joy in my miserable depressing reads than this mumbo jumbo.

I really enjoyed this. Definitely a light read of a "chick lit" genre - wrapped up cleanly at the end (cheesy, but I like that). Easy bedtime read; doesn't need too much concentration.
Some implausible story lines, but that's what makes it fiction, right?

Fun for me as a new "Londoner" as the story took place in London and I actually got many of the references!

L'ho letto perchè era un regalo. Si lascia leggere, è scorrevole, ma niente di più. La storia è semplice, senza una trama particolare e il finale scontato. La parte più simpatica sono le note a inizio capitolo prese da vecchi libri di consigli per una casalinga/moglie ideale degli anni cinquanta/sessanta: piccole finestre su un'epoca.

a nice diverting read. main character is rather wingy and hypocritical making the first 100ish pages a little trying, but she does grow out of it thankfully. lovely homemaker hints dotted throughout, I would have liked more though. very on trend so will date, but captures the craft revival nicely with meaning.

All'inizio il romanzo sembra molto pesante, ma man mano diventa scorrevole. Devo dire che però il titolo italiano non ha molta affinità col contenuto. Sicuramente può essere definito un libro su qualcosa di reale, come ritrovarsi da sola in una casa che hai affittato col tuo ragazzo, che hai sbattuto fuori casa perché si è portato a letto una tua amica. Felt the book took a while to get going but it picked up in the second half. The old style home tips to start each chapter was something a bit different.
Would be interested to see if there was a follow on book as the end definitely left it open for a follow up.
Overall a good read but not something I would rush to read again.

This the the first Amy Bratley book i have read and it certainley will not be the last. I really enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. Which i feel is always a sign of a good book.

I instantly liked the character Juliet as she was so easily likeable, she really wants to have a future with her boyfriend Simon who she has been with for 3 years, but he has other ideas.

A number of events happen and things don't go according to plan. But it all turns out good in the end.

Per il 50% del tempo i personaggi di questo romanzo (romanzo???) sono sbronzi. Per il 60% del tempo fanno bilottate una via l’altra. E per il 90% del tempo sproloquiano.
