Thomas Enger’s “Burned” is an interesting procedural taking place in Oslo, Norway. A female student of a communication and arts college has been stoned to death, and a Muslim boyfriend of her arrested. The main character is a crime journalist in a web-based news outfit, Henning Juul, who is just coming back to work after having suffered an unimaginable tragedy. His investigation of the case and the police investigation are portrayed in the two complementary and intertwined threads in the novel.

Thomas Enger has developed a character in Henning Juul that is both endearing and frustrating to the reader. His quiet demeanor covers up a rebellious and tenacious nature.A gap in the solution of any problem brings out his determinism and professional standards. It also gets him into trouble with his boss, co-workers and those who want to hide what they have done.

This is the first of the Henning Juul series to be published in English by Atria Books. Even so, it feels a bit like there was a prequel to Burned, as references are made to other stories Juul has covered, and the terrible tragedy that befell him.

In Burned by Thomas Enger, Henning Juul is a veteran investigative reporter, returning to work after a series of personal tragedies left him changed and fragile. An apartment fire killed his son, ended his marriage and left him physically disfigured. He is struggling to deal with his fears and a case of PTSD that has left him unable to work for more than two years. A lot has changed in the world of internet news, he feels shaky, his sources and contacts may have moved on, but he needs to prove h...more

Burned is a brand new (hopefully a future series) Nordic Noir book coming out of Norway. Our intrepid investigator is a reporter who is coming back from a devastating home fire that injured him and claimed the life of his son. While digging into the case it becomes clear the scars he bears are nothing to the scars that are hidden within his mind. The case itself is quite interesting as a Norwegian girl is found murdered in a horrific Sharia manner, buried to the chest and then stoned to death, a...more
Henning Juul hasn't worked in two years. Recovering from traumatic burns on his face, the loss of his son from the fire and the imminent divorce from his wife Nora has left him empty. He finally returns to work at 123News, an internet newspaper. He's an investigative crime reporter and he's partnered up with Iver Gundersen, Nora's new boyfriend.

Henning is in the image of financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist from Steig Larrson's The Millenium Series. Both men are quiet, determined and total professionals.

A solid 3.5 of a series opener.
A new Nordic author has come my way -- Norwegian writer Thomas Enger, who also has a new series to watch out for. Even if I didn't know that there are already more in the works, the end of Burned literally paves the way for a sequel. Hopefully the new entries will be translated and made available to readers as soon as possible, because if this first foray is any indication, the series is going to be a good one.

I would actually score this a 3.5.
A woman, brutally murdered, becomes the first story covered by crime-reporter Henning Juul upon his return to 123news following a two year hiatus. What first appears as a possible honor killing involving the murdered woman's boyfriend Mahmoud Marhoni eventually becomes a much more bizarre tale of revenge.

This was an excellent read. I read a lot of crime/mystery and I must admit that I am one of the few who did not get the Millennium trilogy. This to me exceeds "The Girl With" series, as the characters are real, the protagonist flawed yet endearing, the murder mystery itself has enough turns and twists to keep you guessing to the end. I am a former journalist, the Millennium trilogy to me very much was a view of what the author wished he had been as a journalist with little reality but more a dre...more

As soon as I read the first unforgettable pages of Burned by Thomas Enger, I knew I was in great hands. The two chapters which open Burned masterfully set up the interlocking themes and moods of the rest of the novel. The dream-like quality of the first and very brief chapter, without any graphic images or any gore whatsoever, knocked me over with its tragic implications. If I had read anymore, I think I would have probably started sobbing. The second chapter is quite the opposite, harsh and jar...more
A Norwegian-set novel in which reporter Henning Juul gets involved in an unusual murder case, his first story after a long absence from work due to a devastating event in his private life.
I love this genre of novel and read lots of this type, both UK and non-UK-based. I thought that the idea of having a reporter as a protagonist made a refreshing change – although it has been done before, and better, most notably by Scottish crime writer Denise Mina. However I struggled with this book, which I f...more

Henning Juul is a journalist, returning to work after a leave of absence. He took the leave of absence due to a fire which resulted in the death of his son and serious injuries to himself. Naturally, his first day back he is drawn into a murder investigation. A woman has been murdered, and it looks like it may have been done by her Muslim boyfriend. As the case progresses, Juul finds that there are really two different stories and that the murdered girl is the only thing the two stories have in...more
Enger carefully builds Henning Juul as the main character in this novel, revealing his background, history and behaviors one part at a time. These characteristics are cunningly woven into the story, making for a detective novel where tweaks and twists in the plot come unexpected and naturally at the same time. The plot has enough twists to keep the book interesting until the very last page, even when the culprit has been unveiled. No artificial moves or jumps in the plot, the story logic is corr...more
I picked up this book because it bore the inevitable sticker proclaiming Enger to be “the next Steig Larssen.” Now, I enjoyed the Larssen’s Millennium trilogy, but to be honest, while I love Lisbeth Salander, I don’t think those books represent the best of Nordic crime fiction. Burned, on the other hand, does.

Buoni i personaggi ben descritti.

I enjoyed this novel partly because it is based in Norway, where I have spent some time, and it brings me back to those times. The plot itself is very diverting, with some intriguing twists, and a slightly different tone than your average crime novel. Though I must admit there were some gaps for me in how the two main storylines were interwoven; I won't go into detail here to prevent any spoilers. Overall, however, I definitely enjoyed the book, and am looking forward to reading the sequel, Pier...more

This book wasn't BAD, per se; it's just when you translate a book from the author's native language (in this case, Norwegian)to English, it loses something in said translation that the story is meant to convey. The author writes a lot like Hemingway, with dry, no nonsense writing that is not very descriptive (which *I* like...gives "atmosphere" to the story) and it makes it 'plod' along...almost turning you off to what he's trying to say. The story itself is curious: what an earlier fire that to...more
Burned is a multi-faceted mystery, taking readers on an investigative journey that travels from college campuses to press conferences, coming into contact with shady businessmen, competitive young filmmakers, and some shadowy sources. As in real life, the answers aren’t simple—and the deeper you get into the mystery, the more complex it becomes.

From the very beginning I related to and liked the main character Juul Henning, his back story was a horrible tragedy in his near past. He works for an investigative online newspaper, which was expremely interesting as well. The story line follows him around Norway and we learn of his personal life and that which haunts him. Well written, easy to follow as he investigates a crime to its conclusion among many twists and turns and incorrect assumptions.
Hemming Juul returned to work after a fire seriously disfigured him & kills his 6 year old son, he is immediately reporting on the murder of a young woman discovered in a tent in a local park. Can he hold onto his sanity whilst investigating the murder. Very enjoyable read, perfect introduction to a new disfunctional detective/Journalist can't wait to read the next one.
