I'm not sure I can find adequate words to describe how awful this book was, but I'm certainly going to try.

I truly enjoy escapist entertainment. Like watching an episode of a Real Housewives show or listening to a Katy Perry album. I don't expect a work of genius, just a little dollop of sugary stupidity to relax my brain after a busy day. You know, the fun kind of stupid. Devoted is the insulting kind of stupid. The sort that makes your mouth gape open in disbelief or your eyes roll in disgust...more I'm not sure I can find adequate words to describe how awful this book was, but I'm certainly going to try.

I truly enjoy escapist entertainment. Like watching an episode of a Real Housewives show or listening to a Katy Perry album. I don't expect a work of genius, just a little dollop of sugary stupidity to relax my brain after a busy day. You know, the fun kind of stupid. Devoted is the insulting kind of stupid. The sort that makes your mouth gape open in disbelief or your eyes roll in disgust at each absurd plot device or insipid narration. Upon finishing this book I threw it to my side and thought, "Why the fuck did I even finish that?!?" It surely must have been to warn anyone else away from doing so with this review.

I honestly didn't remember a lot of what happened in the first book of this series, but it didn't matter, because the first half of the book is mostly characters rehashing the story. Essentially, Hilary (um, Clea) is trying to find her immortal ~*~soul mate true love~*~ Sage because he was kidnapped by cult members who want to steal his immortality that is derived from the elixir of life so they can become immortal themselves and do all kinds of nasty evil things. Apparently there is now also a family of beings of "projected consciousness" who drank the elixir too back in "ancient Greece" (no, seriously, they call it that.) The main character of this family is a seven year old girl named Amelia (which is not even a Greek name, by the way) who drank the elixir by accident and so her whole family drank it too in order to spend eternity with her. Turns out, if you drink enough elixir to become immortal, eventually your body can't take all that immortality and it will wither and stop being able to function. Then you just become a sort of spirit ghost thing that is in limbo and your body is just a husk. Amelia's grandfather builds a house in Switzerland fitted out with glass coffins for their bodies to chill out in and wait until they can recapture the elixir's powers and allow their consciousnesses to return. Confusing? Insanely ridiculous? YES. Read on!

***SPOILERS FROM HERE ON***

Clea is visited by these spirit things while she's Bella Swan-ing over the loss of her "true love," who she'd only known in her current lifetime for maybe a week, and who had sex with her in a car to show her how much he cares. What a winner. The spirit things show her visions of Sage. He's in a room! Somewhere! And a really hot girl is his captor... Oh noes! Reluctantly, Clea teams up with her convenient romantic rival/bff, Ben. Ben, however, has moved on from mopey Clea to her surprisingly famous senator mom's assistant, Suzanne. Clea presents Suzanne to her readers as a perfect overachieving type. I think we're supposed to dislike her, but I was rooting for Ben to kick Clea's pathetic ass to the curb and run away with Suzanne. Eventually, of course, Ben agrees to help search for Sage. The two go on a ridiculous mission to meet up with one of the elixir cult groups that is looking for Sage too, since everybody wants up in this elixir of life for their own purposes. Clea's mom's new stable boy (who is conveniently dating Clea's friend Rayna) is, surprise! a member of this cult group of people who only live till they're 30 for some reason. He comes along to help. Which side will win??? Do you really still care? Okay...

Clea sees a vision of Sage and hot captor girl performing a ritual that will sever the soul mate tie between himself and Clea because spirit mom thing showed him a vision of Clea "cheating" on him with Ben. But she wasn't, really, she was just trying to trick the spirit mom! Misunderstanding! Oh no! Don't destroy this beautiful non-mentally abusive relationship! Too late. The ritual takes place. Eventually the group finds where Sage is, conveniently like, ten minutes before the cult group led by spirit being girl's evil mom is about to kill him to drain the elixir from his body. Some people get shot and stuff. One second before time's up, Sage is stabbed in the heart. Yay! Stable Boy got stabbed too by the same knife. So... Sage's spirit inhabits Stable Boy's body. Now Clea has 3 love interests... kind of. WHAT THE FUCK. No one should love her- she's awful!

In my review of Elixir, I predicted Ben would die to save Clea and Sage would kill himself so his soul can inhabit Ben's body. This sort of happened, but in an even more annoying way! So, okay... Clea's boyfriend (Sage) is now inhabiting Rayna's dead boyfriend's (Stable Boy) body. Can you imagine that scenario? "I'm making out with my boyfriend, who just happens to be your dead boyfriend too!" Awkward! Clea is also still in love with Ben, who likes Suzanne, and who should really have stayed out of this whole mess to begin with. Run away, Ben! And you too, Rayna! You're both better off. Clea is a self-destructive waste and a terrible role model for young women. I truly think she might even be a worse protagonist than Bella Swan. Yikes, folks.

If you made it this far, I commend you for trying to make sense of this review. I can barely make sense of it myself, and I managed to make it through all 350 pages of this awful book. That wasn't much of a feat, though, it's in 14 point font, and several chapters are in italics just in case you can't distinguish that there are different narrators. There truly must be better young adult supernatural novel series to spend your time on. Even Twilight is marginally better than this!(less)

I’m a little overwhelmed with Devoted. It was a good and all, definitely a step up from Elixir, the first book. But I guess the vastness on how this series has progressed into was not something I was prepared for. What started out as a simple love story morphed into a world where the story of the Elixir of Life has more to it than it seems and the tragic love story between Clea and Sage is just one of the few misgivings when the Elixir is involved.

And along with Suzanne, is Nico, an aid in the stables, who Rayna instantly falls for, though he isn’t as he appears.

Most of us have the usual pretence of rolling our eyes at a celebrities name on a book that isn’t a biography, assuming their writing skills will be lacking, that their plot will be pointless. But sometimes our assumptions can be wrong.

I’ll be honest, Hilary Duff isn’t the best writer out there, but for a beginner she is pretty good. Her writing, although lacking in some parts, is refreshing to read and also quite surprising—considering the fact I initially believed her as having no skills. She has also improved from her first book, Elixir, seeming more confident with her skills, along with her once again vibrant describing of the different sceneries that our main character visits.

One thing I like about her writing is that the main plot has already been thought out—Devoted’s ending linking with information we learnt in Elixir. But because of her main plot being already being planned out, I felt that she hadn’t completely planned what would happen in-between, the book at one point felt marginally dragged out, and I found myself wanting something interesting to happen. But even with the dragging out, I couldn’t stop reading. I was simply curious, the world that has been made in Devoted, is utterly intriguing, from the love between our main character, Clea and Sage, to her friendships with Ben and Rayna. To the mysterious groups: Cursed Vengeance and Saviours of Life. But out of them all I was most intrigued by a new character, Amelia and her mysterious family.

I’ll finish with this: Whoa, that was an ending, and I can’t help but feel sympathy towards a certain character whose heart will be broken when they find out what happened.

I’ll be waiting for the third and final book, Truth, to be released next year.(less)

Well, I didn't actually like this one as much as the first. The first one was SO interesting and felt like an adventure at every turn. It was so full of little details I almost didn't remember some of them, ha. But this one? Well, this one felt a little slower and I even thought it dragged a bit. This one is a little hard for me to rate, I did enjoy Elixir, and definitely enjoyed Devoted, however I was disappointed with the turn the story took. Alrighty, first off: WHAT A MEAN WAY TO END THIS BOOK!!
Now that I've gotten that out of my system, I officially love this series. I love the way it works, I love the science behind it, I love the conflict.

At first I was taken aback with the ghost-like family. They just sprung out of nowhere. I thought it was just Clea hallucinating out of extreme depression, but I was relieved to find out that she hasn't gone insane yet. Duff's creativity shines through with the creation of Amelia's family. They are victims of the Elixir who in desperation to keep living for eternity, devises a plan for them to exist has mere "conscienceless." They have amazing mental powers allowing them to be telekenetic, psychic, and to materialize wherever they wish. They are a unique bunch, and a pleasure to read. Amelia, the youngest of the family, opts to help Clea despite her family's disapproval. Amelia's mother, Petra, has lost all sense of humanity, and seeks to eradicate her daughter. Seven-year old (or twenty-five hundred year old, depending on how you look at it) Amelia is admirable, she is willing to sacrifice her existence for her morals, and she is also Clea's only hope. Amelia and Clea switch off the role of narrators throughout the novel. Amelia overshadows Clea, simply because Amelia's supernatural powers are just more intriguing than Clea's lovelorn preachings.

In summary, Clea is in an emotional rollercoaster, she does stupid things and takes out her anger on the wrong people. The back cover claims Clea "wasn't raised to be a weak person," but she clearly shows her flaws in Devoted. She can't seem to do much without Ben's help. Despite ignoring Ben for weeks, she goes right back to ask him for help once she figures out she needs Ben's intelligence. It seems like Clea can't do anything without a an by her side. The back cover goes to to claim Sage saw the parts Clea "didn't share with anyone...and [loved her] anyway." which made me wince. I don't know what Clea doesn't share with anyone, she is clearly an open book; she can't even tell a lie without her best friends knowing in five seconds flat. Clea is obsessed with Sage, unable to see Ben, who clearly loves her for her flaws as well. I can't say I am rooting for Ben either because he retaliates against Clea by dating a gorgeous assistant and he also seems largely unreliable (not only did he get held hostage and find pesky ways to taunt Clea.) Whatever hate is harness in the first novel for Ben turns into pity. He is the poor friend who missed the opportunity for a love confession, not to mention that he is fated to not get the girl anyway.

Clea goes an hunts down another group of shady people called the Cursed Vengeance to beat up the original group of shady people called Saviors of Life. Cursed Vengeance is straight up bad-ass. Despite their military training and deadly arsenal of weapons, they are straight to the point; they don't spend time plotting some elaborate lan, if they want you, then they kidnap you. I guess being cursed to a life where you are destined to die before thirty makes you cut to the chase. My favorite character is Sloane, the leader of Cursed Vengeance. She wants Sage dead, but she is merciful, and she also isn't afraid to swear.

To my pleasure, there is relatively more action than romance in Devoted. Though both of Clea's love interests get new lovers. Ben turns to the gorgeous, intelligent Suzanne while Sage sets his sights on Lilia who eventually convinces him to release his bond with Clea. Clea gets jealous and impulsively seduces Ben...

Elixir was problematic for me in its many plot holes, Devoted had fewer of them. I hope it's a sign of Duff paying extra attention to honing her story planning skills. Why in the world would you go into Walmart and buy a duffel bag packed with knives anyway, isn't that just dead weight? And why in the world wouldn't the store clerk call the police? Just because the abandoned subway station was a bomb shelter, doesn't mean it gets electricity. How can it go undetected by the electric company? If Clea wanted to save Sage, wouldn't it be smarter just to hug him so that when the dagger strikes, it would hit her instead?

Unfortunately, the mystery surrounding her missing father while prominent in the first novel completely disintegrated in the second. Clea seems to forget, or give up, on finding her father because...she has her soulmate to save. Fathers obviously take a backseat to lovers, at least that's how Clea works. It feels like the reader is supposed to assume her father is dead though that is never made tacit.

After finishing Elixir, I immediately picked up Devoted to quench my thirst. Devoted, like its predecessor, Elixir, is set up for its final conclusion. Unlike Elixir however, Devoted opens the story to more potential and Clea is not left swallowed in lovelorn depression. I knew to brace myself for emo Clea in Devoted (it was like Bella without the blank pages, fetal positions, and crazy motorcycles.) The conclusion wasn't exactly a cliffhanger, but I was left curious. The love triangle Duff created just might turn into a love rectangle (or square? or quadrilateral?) Overall, I can see Duff's writing improve exponentially: she has created a enthralling love story filled with well-developed characters and thrilling action. Duff's talent for taking the paranormal genre and making it her own, has me excited for her next work.(less)

The follow up to Elixir, Devoted packs plenty of flash and action, but none of the heart. And that's great if romance bugs the crap out of you. In Devoted we have lots of action, new mysteries, and angst (yay, my favorite). And that's where the good ends.

I finished book one pleasantly surprised and eager to know more, I had to wait until I could get back to the library to get this one and I couldn't wait. Thinking of book 1 and looking at this one I thought I would be finished by the next night, could easily read it in a day, but for some reason it's taken me 5 days. I just wasn't that interested, I wouldn't be desperate to grab it. Something about it just didn't feel right.

I still liked Clea as a character but she is more obsessive and needy in this book and at points it got annoying, she would moan that Sage was gone and was clearly in danger but she wouldn't do much about it other than moan that she didn't know how to find him.
Ben has become distant and instead of the cheeky, funny, loyal friend, he becomes a bit of an arrogant a**. I missed the pairs easy banter and friendship.
Sage doesn't really feature much in this book, he is mentioned a lot but hardly ever 'seen' and when he is it's only a couple of pages. I wanted more from him, I liked his easy-going, self-assured behavior in the first book and the easy way he interacted with Clea.
We are also introduced to another family of Immortals, but after so many years they aren't much more than spirits. I was really confused by what exactly they were and how it all worked. I just couldn't fathom it until at least half way through.
I'm making it sound like I hated it, I didn't it was still an okay story, the plot idea was good and i liked the involvement of 'Cursed Vengeance' and the introduction to Nico, woah Nico! there were moments when the book really picked up and I would be engrossed then the chapter would end and the scene would shift and I would be out again.
The book doesn't have a proper ending, it is clearly set for another part and I am curious enough to want to read it. I want to know what happens, but fear I will have to wait to know which is extra frustrating.
There is potential in this book but I just felt like something was missing. If you enjoyed the first book or am a Duff fan, I would recommend reading it, but I'm hoping the next book picks up again.(less)

i think hillary duff did a great job on this one ! it is amazing!
even though there are parts that i hated, this book got me HOOKED. i could not put it down. the things that bothered me the most were;
-the sage falling in love with lila. i thought they were soulmates? i thought he was supposed to love only clea. the first time i read this, i thought it was petra showing a fake scene, ugh.
-then, clea decides to get revenge. poor ben trying to move on but then now believes that clea was for real.

Her journey takes her to Cincinnati, Ohio and from there she encounters Cursed Vengenace under an abandoned train station. From that point on Clea made a pact with them to team up and help them find the Saviors only if she could get Sage out of the chaos could she keep Sage. She agreed knowing full well that she would have to have Cv's help to stop the Saviors. All throughout the book the reader sees that Clea and Sage have this soulmate bond that has been between them since past lifetimes. There souls and her bestfriend Ben's soul get reincarnated everytime they are killed and they each come back into the next life as someone else. But the ultimate interesting idea is that Sage and Clea always find each other in each life because of their bond. Their bond can only be severed by one of them saying they no longer wanted to be bonded to each other. Also, the reader sees these consciences called Mother, Grandfather, Father and Amelia who at one time used to be human but are no longer because the elixr has been in their bodies for too long. They are trying to help the Saviors kill Sage, well all of them except Amelia. She knows its wrong and that they would be killing an innocent soul and she begins to try to help Clea the best she could. Overall Clea is trying to save the life of her soulmate before his untimely demise.

This book was more than I imagined it would be. I really enjoyed it and I could barely put it down! I didn't want to do anythnig else but crawl up in a chair and read Devoted by Hilary Duff. It was a really refreshing story to hear. It was such a creative piece of work that had so much imagination placed into it that I really loved every minute while I was reading it that I was sad to see it end. I would recommend this book if you are imaginative and are ready for an adventure into the life of Clea Raymond. Overall a really amazing read!!

I believe that the author's purpose of writing the book was to entertain the readers who picked up the novel but also to show the readers a life long story. I think it was playing on the old story of star-crossed lovers but eventually they were able to be together so that put a little twist into that theme. The evidence I have to support my theory is all throughout the book the reader can evidently see that Clea and Sage are fighting for their love and try to do everything in thier power to be able to be together. From Clea seeking out the help of Cursed Vengenace and talking to conscience beings, to finally flying across the country to find Sage proves that Clea was madly in love with Sage and they would do anyhting to be together if they had the chance to get to each other.

The theme that stuck out to me of the book was persistance pays off in the end. Clea fought to the end, risking her life, and her friends to try to keep Sage alive so she could be with him. She could have given up and easily said "Eh... he's not worth my time." But she knew he was something more to her and that she couldn't give up. She had to stick it out and fight to the end if she ever wanted to see Sage again!

I'll begin by saying I loved Elixir--give or take a little love. It was good. It had mystery. It had suspense. (Though the car scene pretty much made me disgusted with Sage.)

So, Sage is gone. End of Elixir. When I opened this book, I expected so much more. Instead, this jumbled, horrible, shredded thing-of-a-story ensued. Pure disappointment.

I had loved Elixir and couldn't wait for this to some out. I can't say it was as great as the first one, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

The story picks up with Sage missing and Clea having no clue how to find them. "Soulmate" is an overused term, but a true soul connection is very rare, and very real. Two people who meet and share such a connection do more than fall in love; they change each other both deeply and irreversibly. real soulmates will always weather diffuclt times; they have to. NO. NONONONONONONONONO!
Okay I could have given this book 1 star but I couldn't dismiss the fact I was COMPLETELY hooked and totally on the edge of my seat throughout the whole it (especially the last 100 pages). But I HATED the ending! (With spoiler) I hated that Clea couldn't see through what happened and did what she did just to spite Sage, I HATE that Sage gave up so quickly, and I HATE that they lost their soul connection. - I was devastated! Omg. Loved. This. Book. The story picked up right where Elixir left off, and I was NOT dissappointed. Hilary Duff added in a few more people and ideas into the story line, which I loved! I really like how she added so much more to the plot in this one as well.

Devoted is a wonderful continuation of Duff's first novel, Elixir. You can definitely tell that she grew as a writer, because not only is the plot line much more captivating and complicated, the story is also better written than her first book. My view on this is a bit blurred because I'm a huge fan of the author as a singer and actress. So yes, I had a hard time to judge on her book objectively.

The reason why I decided to give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because of some of the details. Take for instance, in the beginning when Clea sees that family and she doesn't freak out. She doesn't demands or asks who they are; she seems like she's striking a conversation with complete strangers. Also, Sage wouldn't have "fallen in love" with someone else if Clea was really her soul mate. Because of this, Clea kinda of betrays her love for Sage in a way. Grr...more

I really hate reading out of chronological order, but I read this before reading the first book Elixir because my library didn't have it >< I actually really enjoyed this book. The characters were enjoyable to follow and I thought the plot was good, though some of the explanations through Amelia were complex to follow. I fell in love with elixir. It has absolutely everything. Suspense, mystery, romance, everything! And I loved the characters BUT I HATED clea's personality in this book. She was annoying and stupid!
I have mixed feelings for Ben. And Suzanne - _________- I hated her so much! Snobby personality.
Killing Nico was too much!
Sage being an ass was, well weird yet cliche.
