Favorite Quote: “I’m all wolf honey. One-hundred percent alpha bastard.”

There is just something about this Southern Arcana world by Moira Rogers that I love. I think the combination of the over the top alphas, the camaraderie between the pack and the continuing story lines and fantastic world building really intrigues me. I have been waiting for Alec’s book for quite some time. He describes himself as a “crotchety old bastard” (he is 44) and let me just get this out of the way – he has a beard.

Carmen Mendoza is part human, empath and werewolf. Though she is unable to shift, her father's werewolf family has repeatedly tried to mate her for political gain. Things are taken too far when a witch is hired to cast a spell to bring out her dormant werewolf. Now under the spell that is tearing her apart, Carmen turns to the only man able to calm her wolf. New Orleans unofficially belongs to Alec Jacobson. After seeking revenge against those who killed his human wife, Alec separated himself fr ...more

I think at this point it's no secret that I adore Moira Rogers and the worlds she creates. Oh, man! Does she know how to write those swoon-worthy Alpha males. Yum. Beyond the hotness of her main characters, though, the secondary characters come off so beautifully. They're alive and the world they live in moves with them in a very real and organic sense. It's not narrow and limited to the here and now of what you're reading, it's vast and it stretches across states and boundaries.

The Review:

The Blurb:
Carmen Mendoza's shapeshifter father abandoned her. Raised by her psychic mother, Carmen ignored her paternal family's political machinations--until the day they decided to use her in their bid for power. Trapped between two worlds and snared by a vicious spell meant to wake her inner wolf, Carmen's only hope is to trust the one man strong enough to soothe her darkest instincts.

My least favorite of the series so far. I felt Alec was toned down and that the heroine was just a beta version of the next heroine, Kat. We get to see a lot of very interesting developments with the political world, though. It provided me with a nice sense of satisfaction after the devastation of the last book.

One of my favorite books in this terrific series. Alec Jacobson is one of the intriguing characters of the Southern Arcana, and it was fascinating to finally see him fall for Carmen Mendoza who is more than a match for the powerful alpha wolf.

Rating: Rating: 8.5 out of 10 - GREAT READ!

First line:
Alec wrenched himself out of the path of a flying fist and acknowledged, for the first time in his increasingly long life, that he might be getting old.

Memorable Scenes:
- the love scene at Carmen's place > explosively hot
- the challenge fights > Never thought I'd be so bloodthirsty and enjoy reading them as much as I did

If this book is any indication of the rest of my reads in 2011, I am going to be a happy, happy girl this year - Deadlock kicked ass!!

I have been a fan of Moira Rogers' Southern Arcana series since the first book, Crux. Deadlock, book 3 in the series, is my favorite so far:

Alec Jacobson is about as Alpha as they come - he's the unofficial leader of the New Orleans area "pack", and a lot of people rely on him to keep things running without interference from the official pack hierarchy up in New Y

DEADLOCK is the third book in Moira Rogers’ Southern Arcana series, our hero is Alec Thompson, we’ve met him in the previous books he is warlock and Jackson’s partner. For anyone new to the series, I personally think you would be better starting from the beginning and working your way through. But enjoy, this is a great paranormal series.

It is one of those romances that manages to mix a fantastic love story with really gritty plot-lines. Rogers isn’t afraid to d

Alec Jacobson is an Alpha wolf and the unofficial head honcho of New Orleans even if he won’t claim a title of authority for himself. Anything happens in the Shifter community and everyone turns to Alec or runs away from him as fast as they can. Alec is most commonly referred to as a jerk, but he is a titan among shifters and the man who takes in shifters who have been forcibly changed. He teaches them how to live as wolves. His past is a brutal one, it keeps him from seeking power, but his time ...more

The Moira Rogers duo strikes again with the third installment of the Southern Arcana Series, and my favorite story so far! Alec is the pureblood werewolf living in New Orleans that does his best to keep the peace, train new wolves, provide sanctuary to those who need it, and defy rules every chance he gets. Big things happen in this book. Big. Things. I am definitely a fan of the Southern Arcana series and this installment entrenched me even deeper into the world. I am more committed than ever. But it wasn’t my favorite installment in the series. To be clear… It was good, but the romance just didn’t resonate quite as much for me as the last one did.

This is Alec’s story, and honestly, he wasn’t even on my radar for a book of his own –at least, not yet. I can see the attraction, though. He is alpha a

OMG! I could not put this book down. Not only does my favorite wizard, Jackson, play an integral role in the plot but the sexual tension between Alec and Carmen is off the charts!

In the previous two books in the series, Crux and Crossroads, Alec comes across as controlling, angry, and ornery. Everyone is scared of him because of his past shenanigans, everyone thinks he's a crazy old alpha bastard. Alec is crazy all right - like a fox! I never thought of Alec as sexy in the other books but my opi

I've been a big fan of the Southern Arcana series since I first read Crux and I'm pleased to say that Deadlock doesn't disappoint. I wasn't too sure how I'd take to Alec as the hero, whenever we've seen him before he has come across as a grumpy, uptight alpha and I wasn't sure I'd be able to warm to him but I have to say he had me hooked within a few pages. We get to learn more about why he acts the way he does and although he may still be a grumpy b*stard he was also sexy as hell. He is protect ...more

Would someone please tell me why it’s taken me so long to jump back into this series. I know I’ve made that statement before, but not including the last two novellas, it has been over a year since I read Crossroads, the last book in this series. A YEAR! That is totally unacceptable.

This world that Moira Rogers has created is amazing. There is so much to it. There are shifters, and there’s magic and crooked politics and danger and amazing characters that include strong, independent women and craz

This is the third installment of the Southern Arcana where Alec, the unofficial Alpha wolf of New Orleans finds his girl. How many times have we heard “Alec Jacobson is an asshole” well it takes an empath to find out what Alec is really like. Andrew very nicely said he’s a hopeless romantic which is a very sweet quality for the big tough brooding guy to have.

Carmen wants to make a change in the supernatural world and she does so by working at the neural clinic in New Orleans. She has seen the ho

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite series! I had high hopes for Alec; he's the older, brooding hottie of the series - the Alpha. In some ways I was happily surprised at his character's development; I liked the dominance mixed with intelligence. I can't figure it out, but he seemed softer than softer I expected, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I love complex characters, but somehow I was disappointed. In this book you're never really sure if he is going to maintain his Alpha stat ...more

DEADLOCK is the third book in the Southern Arcana series and I have been anticipating Alec’s story since book one. A bossy, grumpy, alpha shapeshifter that keeps a cage in his basement and has a tendency of kidnapping people that pose a threat to his friends? What’s not to love!

Carmen Mendoza has some pretty simple goals. Help the supernatural creatures of NOLA and to avoid all the political marriage traps her family keeps tossing in her path. Alec has a goal as well. To keep NOLA safe from the

When I saw that Alec was going to be the focus of this book I was super happy. He has always been the badass of the series, the one everyone is afraid of, but I also knew there was more to him. We finally got his history and why he hates his family so much, I would too.

It was fun to see him transform from taking care of his little area to more. Of course that transformation could only happen when he meet a woman, something he never expected due to his past.

A quick and satisfying read overall but the obstacles are overcome far too easily.

Alec and Carmen meet and fall in lust then love in the blink of an eye with nothing to hamper their romance (Alec gets over his dead wife very quickly, Carmen accepts his dominance and relinquishes her independence in a flash, and Alec accepts his political destiny without reservation). Nevertheless, their relatively angst free relationship is engaging and they are both likeable characters who are e

Any man that calls himself an 100% alpha bastard is somebody in my book to be excited over. I was very excited to finally get Alec's book. He has always been the full on scary one in the series and it was good to get to find where all his angst came from. I was not let down. This was another awesome book in the southern arcana series.

Ever since I first met Alec I wanted this story, and now I finally got it. He was just so alpha, wounded and all that jazz.

I am gonna make this into a quickie (will try at least).

Alec is being his usual self, taking care of New Orleans and at the same time not taking part in politics. In comes Carmen, sparks fly and she is the one to soothe his soul. Sparks fly, in and out of bed (when they get there).

And there is politics. Her family is making a play for a seat, and they are real bastards. Alec

I really enjoyed this book in the Southern Arcana series. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about it, and actually put off reading it for a little while because I didn't love Alec's character in the other books. It's not that I didn't like him, I just wasn't sure I wanted to read a whole story devoted to him and from his perspective.

What was I thinking?! It was great. Rogers does a great job of conveying Alec's voice and Carmen is a wonderful match for him. I really enjoy this series and ge

I love this book. The characters are vivid and the plot sucked me in by the end of the first page. I loved the author’s version of the world in general and New Orleans in particular. It is such an apt place for supernatural beings to gather. Carmen is a complex character who has a really bizarre family dynamic. She was abandoned by a father who still wants to control her life. Fortunately for Alec, his family is too afraid to try to control him anymore. The author is a master at writing suspense ...more

The beginning was fantastic. It provided enough back-story and in such a way that I was able to connect emotionally to the characters and understand their connections to each other, without being buried in info-dumps. I enjoyed watching Alec and Carmen grow as characters and as a couple. Really, the emotional development in the first part of the story was wonderfully done. At that point, I was ready to give this book 5 stars.

I love this series, I haven't been disappointed by any of them yet and each one has just gotten better. This was about Alec and I was hopeful that everything would work out for him and I should have known not to worry. His story fit him perfectly and his love interest fit him even better.

I do want to give a little note for those readers who can be squeamish about sex scenes. This one was a little more sexual than the previous two books, and there was a little bondage and some submissive games in
