4.5 STARS. I quite liked this version of Cinderella! It's from the Spice Islands of Indonesia and it definitely adds a new flavor to the tale, one that I loved! The message of "Cinderella" being kind to animals is so refreshing, and gotta love that the "fairy godmother" is a crocodile. Too fabulous! The illustrations are beautiful and feel "authentic." The only aspect I felt was lacking is that there was really no love development between Damura/Cinderella and

This book is another version of a Cinderella story. Damura is a girl whose mother passes away and ends up living with a terrible step mother and step sister. They treat her very badly. While out by the river one day washing clothes, Damura remembers something her mom told her-to ask nature for help. Out of the water pops a crocodile who Damura calls, "Grandmother". The crocodile helps her in this time of need. When Damura finds out that the prince is coming, the crocodile gives h

This version of the Cinderella fairytale comes from the Spice Islands. Damura’s mother teaches her traditional dances and to respect the animals. When she dies, Damura is tricked into convincing her father to marry another woman in the village, who soon turns on Damura, treating her as a slave for herself and her daughter. When Damura is doing laundry at the river, she loses her old sarong, but Grandmother Crocodile gives her another made of silver. The stepsister tries to repeat Damura’s su

I recommend this Indonesian version to beginning explorers or completists. It's the second time I've seen the new-to-me bit that the step-mother conned the girl into asking her Daddy to marry her - would that the European version had that device because I never did understand how a father could be so blind and neglectful.

In this Indonesian Cinderella tale, the crocodile plays the role of fairy godmother. Damura (the Cinderella character) is rewarded for her kindness to the animals and her stepmother and stepsister are rightfully punished for their cruelty.

Enjoyabe enough read. Good together with another better Cinderella story. Great for comparisons. Thought the story was lacking a little, maybe many traditional tales are...? There were a few parts where the flow was interrupted.

Beautiful illustrations and different enough from the familiar tale to be intriguing. I liked the emphasis on kindness.

Fairy Tale. CIP Summary: "In this Indonesian version of the Cinderella story, a girl named Damura escapes her cruel stepmother and stepsister and marries a handsome prince with the help of Grandmother Crocodile."
This story was another Cinderella story, but with an island flavor. The "godmother" was a crocodile, which was an interesting twist. A little strange that an alligator was able to spit Damura back out after eating her. Appropriate for a fourth grader a

A cute Cinderella story set in the spice islands. True to the island feel the fairy godmother is shown as a crocodile called grandmother. I enjoyed reading a different version.
