This book has very personal significance for me and my family because both of my maternal grandparents lived a portion of the early years of their lives in the now vanished mill village of Scull (sometimes spelled "Skull") Shoals. My grandfather used to talk to my father about the area, planning that they would take an excursion there, but they never did because for many years the area was very isolated with not a very well kempt and accessible path leading to it. Interesting account of the rise and fall of a mill village near Athens. Actually a pretty clear rendering of white male privilege and greed. Native Americans living where you want to live? Drive them out and take their homeland. Now you need cheap labor to farm that land and mill your cotton? Buy slaves kidnapped from their homeland. Lose a war you started and lose your slaves? Just ignore that and keep the people you won't allow to become educated working in continual servitude to you. Just ...more
