Meet Charlie.

He's a ranch dog. Breakfast is his life, especially when bacon is involved. Charlie has dangly ears, floppy skin, and big fat paws. And he loves living in the country. That's because he works like a dog...fixing fences, gardening, and helping his family out on the range.

Yep, it's all work, all the time for Charlie the ranch dog. In fact, he's probably working...more

Charlie the Ranch Dog by Ree Drummond, illustrated by Diane deGroat is
a look at the life of a hard working pioneer ranch dog, two dogs in fact, as related by Ree Drummond, known as the Pioneer Woman.

Charlie narrates a typical day at the ranch with his fellow canine Suzy. Charlie is a bassett hound and Suzie is a Jack Russell Terrier. In Charlie's mind he is constantly busy, including training Suzie. In reality, Charlie mainly sleeps and eats, with bacon his favorite food.
Charlie eventually sa...more

Meet Charlie, the pioneer ranch dog. Charlie is the beloved pet of Ree Drummond, author of the the hugely popular blog, The Pioneer Woman. In this amusing story, Charlie narrates a typical day at the ranch with his sidekick and fellow canine, Suzie. Apparently, Suzie is in need of much guidance about what needs to be done on a ranch and Charlie's work is never done between ranching, protecting and teaching Suzie. The reality is Charlie doesn't do much but sleep and eat (especially bacon!), and S...more

The genre of this book is a picture book, and is intended for children who are (P) ages five to eight years old. This book is about a dog names Charlie and his friend Suzie who live on a ranch. Charlie is a bassett hound who loves to sleep and eat, and occasionally work on the ranch. But really Suzie does most of the work while Charlie relaxs. This is a very cute book that children are sure to fall in love with. Charlie, the main character, is a cute and funny pup with a huge heart. The illustra...more

Life isn't easy for a working dog, and Charlie the basset hound describes this busy routine. Together with his canine friend Suzie, he maintains order on the ranch. But as he goes through the day, it's clear that Charlie does more sleeping, eating, and relaxing than he does working. But when the family cows start to chew on the plants in the garden, Charlie comes to life. This would be a neat book to use for introducing voice since Charlie's voice is so present in the book's pages. Anyone who lo...more

Loved this book! Such a cute story, and my K-3 grade kids enjoyed it. I was going to do a book talk on Brian Selznick's "Wonderstruck" and share his writing process with the 4th and 5th graders (had seen him in person at a book signing where he did a presentation). I wanted to show the writing process with a book appropriate for the young ones, as well, and found Ree Drummond's blog when searching. She shares pictures of the writing process (including the work with her illustrator) and explains...more

Charlie and Suzie are ranch dogs...each having his/her own special talent to help out on the ranch. Charlie's happens to be more of the slower variety of helping than Suzie. They would be two easy characters to compare with their work at the ranch.

I would consider using the illustrations as part of a study on Dian deGroat, illustrator of We Gather Together...Now Please Get Lost! , Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire, and other Gilbert books.

I couldn't help but be amused by Charlie's distinctive voice. Charlie introduces himself as a ranch dog, and by the way he describes his daily tasks, you would think he is indispensable to the work of the ranch. Yet the illustrations reveal a different story: it turns out Suzie, the other ranch dog, is quite the energetic work dog, while Charlie's priorities are more along the lines of eating and napping. But a dramatic moment of bovine mischief finally allows Charlie to rise to the level of his...more

Charlie: The Ranch Dog was a cute, quick, fun read. The book was both entertaining and easy to read. There were not a lot of big words used, which I think is an important factor in a children’s book. At times, the book even read sort of like a Dick and Jane novel…”Here is Charlie sleeping..z.z.z.” Also the sentences were about only two or three sentences long. Charlie is the narrator of this book. My other favorite character besides Charlie was the chipmunk. He was always shadowing Charlie. This...more

Charlie the ranch dog must be some kin to my favorite “head of ranch security”, Hank the cowdog. Charlie is in charge and he must be constantly on alert to dangers on the ranch…except, of course, when he must take time out for breakfast, and lunch, and a few naps now and then. Delightful.

“The first thing we do every day is get out of bed early. Too early. Dark early.

I’d better go wake up Suzie. She’s never been much of a morning dog.

Well…I guess she was a morning dog today. There’s a first time...more

I follow Ree's blog and my absolute favorite part of it are Charlie stories and pictures. How did I not know that there was a picture book about him?!?! I was browsing the shelves at the library and it popped right out at me... when I saw the title on the spine I knew it had to be about the Charlie that I loved to follow online :-) Loved the illustrations and the run down of Charlie's day. It certainly helps that I have a lazy hound of my own! Fun read - glad I found... will definitely be adding...more

I like the artwork - colorful realism, well done. Four stars.

The story is tongue-in-cheek and I give it a two star. Charlie thinks of himself as wonderful, while we can see that the other dog is doing all the work. The seven year old would get it while the three year old was bored. This sort of approach always bugs me a little. It feels like I'm reading something mocking and I feel sorry for the creatures that narrate and are being made fools. I realize that it is just a dog, and it can be funny...more

I have never read anything by Ree Drummond. She is the "Pioneer Woman" who has a blog, several cookbooks, and her own Food Network tv show. One of my friends has told me about her and that her cookbooks are really great. So, when I picked up this book didn't really know what to expect. It was a great book for her first shot out the gate as a children's write. I could believe that this book was written from the point of view from the dog. Really enjoyed reading this; now I am looking forward to r...more

This book taught me a lot about what it must be like to be a dog on a ranch. This book is written by my daddy's hero, The Pioneer Woman. Mommy doesn't believe in the pioneer woman, but why would my dad idolize someone who doesn't exist... and who wrote this book if she doesn't exist. Daddy had to explain to me that there are some pioneers that aren't mormon... like the pioneer woman (she likes her coffee and spirits a bit too much).

I would like to be Charlie when I grow up, even if it does soun...more

A ranch dog's work is never done and Charlie is no exception to this rule. He is a thoughtful little gentleman who doesn't forget the importance of a good meal (breakfast is his favorite... mine, too); who doesn't steal the spotlight and lets his best friend, Suzie shine; who knows the importance of a good rest ("I must have accidentally closed my eyes for a few seconds"); and who knows that no matter where you are, you're always important and appreciated by those who love you.

M.m.m. Well, I liked it. (Pam gave it a 4. Is that because you're such a dog lover??) Great illustrations, a little over-sized, and a nice feel with raised lettering on the paperback cover. Cute story and Charlie the Ranch Dog does save the day. I recognized Diane deGroat's illustrations but couldn't remember that until just now. Not sure why there is a lasagna recipe in there, but maybe I will try it! (Okay maybe I give it a 3.8)

Charlie the hound lives on a ranch, with his terrier friend, Susie. The two work hard all day, with Charlie making sure that Susie does her job right. Between meals, naps, and supervising, a ranch dog's work is never done. Hmm. Guess it's time for another nap....Zzzz. With wonderful illustrations by Diane de Groat, this picture book will tickle the funny bone of kids who understand the irony of the "hard-working" hound. Ages 3-6

Charlie the Ranch Dog has a LOT of responsibility around the ranch! Between taking care of business, napping and eating breakfast, the basset hound doesn't have time for anything else. In the end, will taking care of the ranch or napping benefit him most?

The illustrations in this book are cute. I do wish that there was more of a storyline to it, but I'm sure kids at school will love it because it takes place on a ranch.
Angie
Charlie and his friend Suzie take care of things on the ranch. They keep the cows out of the yard and garden. They help in the garden and they keep critters off the porch. Well Charlie supervises while Suzie does those things. Charlie really likes to nap. Charlie is just like a big old dog should be. Really interested in eating and sleeping, but thinks he is big stuff. I would love to have a Charlie!

Charlie the Ranch Dog thinks he is very important. There's a lot for a dog to do on a ranch. Charlie, a bassett hound, must make sure that Suzy, a Jack Russell terrier, does her job, and he helps keep the ranch running. At least that's what he says he does. The illustrations tell otherwise. This charming book with colorful, engaging illustrations will charm both children and their parents.

This is a fun look at life on a ranch in the country, told from the perspective of a hound dog. The illustrations are terrific and the story is humorous. I'm not exactly sure why, but there's a recipe for lasagna included on the last page. It looks like a fairly standard recipe except that it calls for cottage cheese (we prefer ricotta). We enjoyed reading this book together.

Absolutely hysterical! As the owner of a basset hound, I thought this was an amazing children's book written about basset's and their personalities. Everything in here made us laugh out loud. I think the humor in owning a basset hound was so well captured because the author is an own of a basset. They truly are a different breed, but we don't love them any less!

Now, I love the Pioneer Woman blog, but I can't get behind a book that seems to only exist for brand promotion. There's no storytelling here, just prattle about the details of the daily life of a ranch dog in the same cutesy voice that Drummond uses on her blog. I have a copy of this at the library because our centralized collection development bought it for us. One star only because the illustrations are cute.

I read this to my grandkids.
Though the book is written with children in mind.
It touches the adult who reads this book to children.
I may need to buy more copies to allow little fingers to touch the pages as we read it.
A good introduction to the author who is also an accomplish parent, and a culinary leader of "everyday" food on her foodtv show.

Charlie, as the title so explicitly states, is a ranch dog. He's up before the sun and helps out with chores around the ranch like... sniffing, eating, and napping. Charlie likes to think he's being helpful, but really his best friend Suzy does all the heavy lifting.

I adored the illustration in this book, and I especially love how they so perfectly and lovably contradict the story Charlie is telling.
Michelle
Cute story. My daughter is obsessed with dogs and loves to shout out "cows" every time she sees one, so this was the perfect book for her. After a few pages I was reading the story in a southern accent for some reason. It seemed to fit.

I loved that Charlie wants a bacon garden. I think I would quite enjoy a bacon garden myself.

Charlie the basset hound lives and works on a ranch. It is hard work especially since he has to make sure that Suzie the Jack Russell terrier holds up her end of the job too.

I enjoy reading Ree's Pioneer Woman blog occasionally, so it was fun to see her pets and family represented in a picture book. The book was cute - cute story, cute illustrations - but the dry, witty humor I love on her blog was so toned down it left me a little disappointed. Still a fun, cute read with the kiddos!

I adored Charlie the Ranch Dog, by the adorable Ree Drummond. Also, the books illustration was very detailed, not to mention beautiful and colorful! Charlie is a basset hound who loves to sleep and eat bacon and bark! ;) Definitely a great pick for all children! There is also a recipe at the end of this book. Yum!

Recommended by kids for NYRA 2013. Charlie, the ranch dog, is a good-natured dog that enjoys napping. It is a pleasant story with nice illustrations, and I can see more a mom recommending this book rather than a kid. It is a nice book to share with your child one-on-one instead of in a storytime.
