George R.R.

Sandkings is a collection of short stories from George R.R. Martin in the 80s. I plan on reading them all, but so far I've only read the title story, Sandkings, which is the last story in this book.

Sandkings

You should NOT read this:

- if you don't like short stories
- if you don't like science fiction
- if you don't like elements of horror
- if you don't like tiny 6-legged creatures
- if the thought of tiny 6-legged creatures crawling around gives you the creeps and makes you imagine things are crawl

This collection feels like it’s an emanation from some platonic concept of “story”. At least for someone who grew up on E.C. Comics, Poe, and Lovecraft. “In the House of the Worm” is an evocative novella filled with squirming horrors and wonders that will bring to mind Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death” and Vance’s Dying Earth, the title story is a rightfully hailed classic; part fairy tale, philosophical piece, and Sweeny Todd horror story, “Stone City” is ‘At the Mountains of Madness” and hints o ...more

Just re-read this one today for at least the fifth time! This story never fails to impress me with its depth...

If you love George R.R. Martin's "The Song of Ice and Fire" series, if you can't wait for the next one to be released, and want to spend all your time re-reading the series and reading anything that reminds you of it, then "Sandkings"...is probably not for you. This book is nothing like that.

In fact, none of the stories in this collection are even similar to each other. In one book you get : a space-traveling Inquisitor, a coming-of-age stone age fairy-tale with a twist, an end of the world (sor

Simon Kress is a rich man who collects dangerous, exotic animals. When most of his pets die due to starvation and neglect when he was called on an extended business trip, he goes on the hunt for replacement pets.

He walks around the city looking for a new and exotic pet to impress his friends with and chanced upon a newly opened store that sells all sorts of odds and ends from artworks and alien artifacts to all sorts of (alien) lifeforms. Inside the store, he discussed his requirements for a new

For lovers of the dark and cynical. This is a story that has stayed with me over the years and I have suggested it many times over- yes, I loved it that much. I decided to pull it out again and have found a new affinity for the story all over again.
A wealthy collector of rare animals buys insect-like highly intelligent life-forms only to find that his cruel and sadistic pleasures plunge him into the very game of survival that became a way of life for the creatures in his menagerie. You know what

This novel made my hair stand on end, so I guess horror would be better suited than sci-fi. It is more than interesting and a real page-turner, but I don't recommend it to those who have phobia of insects, although it is very good.
I had no idea that GRRM can write so many genres so well. I'm in awe.

I loved the television adaptation of the story SANDKINGS back in the nineties. It was the premier episode of the new OUTER LIMITS series on SHOWTIME, I think. I had no idea it was written by Martin. Look forward to checking this collection out.

The first sci-fi short stories I ever read. My grandma gave me an early edition copy as a 13 year old, and because of this I'm one of the few who know Martin for his sci-fi more than his fantasy.

If my house was burning down, this and the other short story collections by Martin would be the books I would save.

The brand of sci-fi that Sankings is a truly unique one. All the intrigue and futuristic developments that come with the best sci-fi are here, but so is a stunning element of wistful melanch

I could almost worship the man whose imagination and cerebral labyrinths gave birth to such a strange story, so well crafted it seems surreal. It makes me wonder what demons and what power of genius could haunt a mind and result in a work of such epic proportions on a scale of values. Although it's cruel in places, scary and even grotesque, resembling the human nature itself, this story is a genius' work!

Out of all the novellas/short stories/whatever they are, I've only read Sandkings.
I never read anything like this before. Speed reading wasn't an option. I was terrified. Completely terrified.

It felt weird at first reading a sci-fi story by GRRM. Upon reading the first 20% of the book, I knew it was going to be a scary read. If you find tiny creatures unsettling, then stop and drop this book. If you can muster enough courage (like I did), then prepare yourself. One thing's for sure -- GRRM truly likes his characters twisted.

I did not make it through my projected reading list once again. Who knew that searching for a new house would be so time consuming! I will get to the books I listed earlier but for now I decided to share one of my favorite short stories to get you ready for next month. October is my favorite month of the year and I am prepared to spend those 31 days sharing all things creepy, spooky, scary, haunted, and gloriously cheesy! Be very excited folks!

Now for my review. I first read Martin's Sandkings i

Every once in a while, we encounter a short story that is powerful enough to embed in our memory no matter how long ago we've read it. I read Sandkings more than ten years ago when I randomly picked it up at our school library, long before George Martin and A Song of Ice and Fire became household names.

For many years after I chanced upon it, I tried recalling and remembering the title and author of the book to no avail. All I had was the memory of the story. Every now and then, I test my luck on

george was known as the great writer of plot twists in genre stories well before game of thrones fame. Back in the eighties i read his stories of superheroes, monsters, sci-fi and fantasy. Sandkings is typical of his best back then.

I've been curious about George R.R. Martin but never enough to approach one of his tomes in the Game of Thrones cycle. Then Lightspeed's podcast read his short story The Way of Cross and Dragon. I really enjoyed it and Martin's talent as a story teller came to the fore in the depth of thought and detail that went into the tale.

Luckily the library had the collection that the story came from and I now have it in my hands so I can sample a bit more.

Ho hum ... Loved The Way of Cross and Dragon. Foun

My boyfriend and I read George R.R. Martin's novelette, "Sandkings," and it was one of the best short works I've read in a while. I've had some trouble concentrating on reading lately, but this story kept me interested and riveted the entire time. I hated the protagonist as a person--but that made it even more gratifying to see the story unfold the way it does.

This story clearly shows that George R.R. Martin is a terrific author, and re-invigorated my efforts to read A GAME OF THRONES (which I'v

Sandkings is a collection of several little stories by George R. R. Martin. The title of the book is as well the the title of one of this stories of which you can read the plot above. I have read all of the stories and I really liked them. Perhaps the first one is a little bit hard to understand. George is a very talented author and he proved it once more by writing these stories. The sandkings story is a very good one, perhaps people are not going to like it if they're easily impressionable but ...more

"Thus it was that I first encountered the striking figure of Saint Judas Iscariot, a complex, ambitious, contradictory, and altogether extraordinary human being.

He was born of a whore in the fabled ancient city-state of Babylon on the same day that the savior was born in Bethlehem, and he spent his childhood in the alleys and gutters, selling his own body when he had to, pimping when hew as older. As a youth he began to experiment with the dark arts, and before the age of twenty he was a skilled
