This play gave me a wonderful idea for my next photography project and another view of hell. Every time I pick up something by existentialist authors, I’m reminded of how much they closely border upon my thoughts on life. The play centers around three characters who are trapped in a room after being dead for several hours and begin conversing about each other’s idea of why they’ve landed there which they think is essentially the hell. They bicker, fight and hate each other and we come to see how...more

I read No Exit in English and French and saw the play while studying in France. In par with Sartre's idea of freedom, we create heaven and hell today, in this life on earth, by other's judgments of our acts. "Hell is the other", the phrase encapsulating heaven and hell, I found quite to the point. The 'other's' eyes pierce into my head, judging and shaping who I am, which I must escape, through my freedom to choose. No Exit is a simple and yet powerful play, which defined Petan's (northeren) Fra...more

The version I read didn't have 4 plays. In fact, I read an online version: http://www.sartre.org/Writings/NoExit...

A brilliant examination of hell. It's more difficult than it looks to write effectively about damnation. I think the most common quote of this book--"hell is other people"--is misunderstood. It makes more sense when taken in context--spoken by a damned soul, a soul so selfish, so unrepentant that to it hell really IS other people. All of the characters in this play are completely in...more

We've often heard the cliche "Hell is other people", but no one has ever taken the saying more literally than Jean-Paul Sartre in 'No Exit'. The play opens on Garcin, a man damned for eternity. He is lead to a plain room with no mirrors or beds, only three couches and poor decorating. Like the two women that arrive after him, Inez and Estelle, he wonders why there are no torturing devices in Hell as expected. However, once the three start in conversation, they realize that they have been chosen...more

"This bronze. Yes, now's the moment; I'm looking at this thing on the mantelpiece, and I understand that I'm in hell. I tell you, everything's been thoughtout beforehand. They knew I'd stand at the fireplace stroking this thing of bronze, with all those eyes intent on me. Devouring me. What? Only two of you? I thought there were more; many more. So this is hell. I'd never have believed it. You remember all we were told about the torture-chambers, the fire and brimstone, the burning marl, Old wiv...more

Jean-Paul Sartre, an existensialst, a philosopher, a novelist etc. His idea of hell is very much similar to the idea of Shakespeare. Shakespeare has quoted once, " All the devils of hell are on the earth". This novel goes on the same bottom line where he depicts a picture of hell, in which he shows three peoples who dies, and then they enters the hell. There were two ladies and one man. All the three peoples were kept in a same room. There was nothing else in the room except few paintings. There...more

Brilliant! The hell as we have probably never imagined it. Perhaps the first piece of existentialist writing that didn't literally give me a headache. Really, something to get back to every now and then.

It was strange, but the setup was nice and it was a really, really interesting concept that I now kind of want someone to write a (good) full-length novel about.

I've read this play some years ago in highschool for the first time. Even then I thought it a masterpiece. Mostly, because at the end of the story you do not close the covers and put the book back on a shelf, then forget all about it and move on with your life. No, it makes you think. Is there an afterlife? Is there a heaven and hell? And what would it look like?...

J.P.Sartre's portrayal of hell is the one that got to me most. Hell is other people? It couldn't be worst to be put inside an exit-l...more

i've been wanting to read this play forever because its design of hell sounded interesting. forever came, and, well, this play leaves something to be desired. these characters are flat. especially the "slimy" estelle. the plot could've benefited from more fleshed out damaged souls, indeed. i need another existential philosopher to take this plot to the next level.

This is the Sartre play that made famous the line "Soylent Green is made of people." Well, not really. I do not think I am spoiling anything by saying that the play takes place in a kind of hell with three characters, one man and two women. They are all there for various reasons. The play spends a few lines extolling existentialist philosophy and maybe surprisingly to you some traditional virtues like courage and honesty. The characters spend most of their time trying to find out why they are th...more

Habe ich vielleicht überlesen, was der Autor vermitteln will?

"Hell is other people." This play is absolutely hilarious, because it puts such an interesting spin on our concept of Hell and the tortures awaiting those of us who are heading there in the afterlife. The idea that two people can drive you absolutely batshit is incredibly resonant, especially when compared to the fact that you can also drive those two people absolutely batshit in turn. Isn't it our interactions with others that make us so angry in our daily lives? And isn't it true that alone, t...more

This was my first Sartre, so I'm not really knowledgeable about his philosophy or other works. I would need to do more study before I could give an in-depth review/critique.

In this drama three individuals go to hell. One is an upper-class woman who threw her baby off a cliff, one is a lesbian, one is a male who is a war-dodger and who committed adultery in front of his wife (all that happens before the story opens). They find themselves in a room together, and they cannot get out of the room. In...more

Perhaps the most clever play written by Sartre, this one-act scene dramatically illustrates the causal link between choices made by man during his lifetime, and facing the repercussions thereafter. Contrary to human understanding wherein the only form of punishment envisioned is corporal, Sartre ventures into the realms of our ethical and moral dilemmas surfacing amidst our helplessness to conquer them anymore in the afterlife. Taking an absolutely different spin on our common understanding of "...more

I finally understand existentialism...or at least a version of myself does. This play isn't much more than a pamphlet in terms of size but the principles expressed are plenty. Garcin, Inez, and Estelle are eternally damned to a Hell none had ever imagined, one without fire, brimstone, torture, or the red devil himself
