Restele secret. Comme la vie meme . Ou pour emprunter la fin de un autre roman deStendhal To the happy Few. le livre etant desine a ceux qui ...more

Translated by C.K. Scott-Moncrieff, introduction by Bergen Evans.

This is a rather unsatisfying little novel of French manners concerning a young man and a young woman who love each other madly but will not think of marrying, for their own reasons, and thus remain basically estranged. According to Evans, Stendhal indicated in a letter (but not in the book) that Octave, the noble hero, is meant to be impotent: this is his "fatal secret." Because this is never mentioned in the story (or even hinted

I think that all those books about a love that complete just at the end of story could be either boring or fascinating.
I like this better than ''Pride and prejudice'' or ''Wuthering Heights''. I don't know why but the story was more captivated.
The contrast between the poor and the rich, Octave and Armance makes the story interesting.
At the beginning, Armance was a girl that didn't care about others say but when it came to a marriage with Octave, she refused saying that she can't do that because

The first, and classic, work by the mononymous Italian.

Enjoyed the rather dramatic choice of ink for Octave's letter, and Bonnivet's elliptic coffee stain and bookbinding manipulations of Soubirane.

Henri-Marie Beyle , better known by his pen name Stendhal , was a 19th-century French writer. Known for his acute analysis of his characters' psychology, he is considered one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism in his two novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839). ...more
