O Γάλλος ποιητής και συγγραφέας Jean Genet έγραψε το σύντομο αυτό κείμενο το 1958 για τον εραστή του Abdallah Bentaga, ένα νεαρό σχοινοβάτη του τσίρκου, τον οποίο γνώρισε όταν ο ίδιος ήταν 45 χρονών. Παίζοντας τον ρόλο του Πυγμαλίωνα, ο Genet στήριξε τον σχεδόν αγράμματο Abdallah στα πρώτα του ακροβατικά βήματα, και αργότερα υπήρξε ξανά το στήριγμα του όταν ο Abdallah τραυματίστηκε σοβαρά κατά την διάρκεια μιας παράστασης. Jean Genet was a prominent, controversial French writer and later political activist. Early in his life he was a vagabond and petty criminal, but later took to writing novels, plays, poems, and essays, including Querelle de Brest, The Thief's Journal, Our Lady of the Flowers, The Balcony, The Blacks and The Maids.
