The theory is borderline trite, and he selects on the dependent variable. The history in it is fine (although not in depth at all) and it is a reasonably fast read. But the theory is underdeveloped and not especially interesting--especially because he only looks at cases of successful empires. Many of his keys to victory, after all, were followed by unsuccessful groups--which means that he never proves that these keys are sufficient.
