To me, food blogging suggests a certain obsession with the twee and precious, along with just the right plating and natural light. I also expect charming writing with wit and personality. Tina Haupert’s new book, Carrots ‘N’ Cake, based on the blog by the same name, delivers on the former but not so much the latter. Bland, boring, obvious, repetitive, self-congratulatory … Haupert’s smug anecdotes are so unremarkable as to be unworthy of the name. Her diet advice will not come as news to anyone...more

I am a regular reader of the blog, Carrots 'n' Cake, thusly, I really wanted to love the companion book. Unfortunately, I just really am not head over heels for what I read.

The book is an easy read, but perhaps it's too easy. It is very similar to reading the blog, but sadly it just doesn't really translate well into book form. I found the writing to be quite repetitive and not really very informative. There are some recipes in the book, but I wasn't really ecstatic about many of them and I wond...more

If I could give this book zero stars, I would. So glad I got it at the library and didn't spend money. I'd like to say that I enjoy the blog so much and Tina seems likeable on there. So what happened? It really fell flat and I don't understand.

First, there is absolutely no worthwhile content. Recipes I don't care about, stories with absolutely no point. She talks about her relationship with soon hubby yet glosses over everything to the point that I didn't care or have any feelings towards her.

I was very excited to win this book, I mean anything with a cupcake on the cover has to be good right? Besides the attractive cover, this book was quick, entertaining read. Christina Haupert, is the woman behind carrotsncake.com, a food blog that began as a food diary has evolved into a platform for healthy living. This book isn't a miracle diet, it isn't an eat this or that and you won't get fat book. This book is a collection of best practices, healthy choices and delicious recipes that have w...more

A friend recently recommended Tina's blog (of the same name) to me. I immediately realized that she had this book and checked it out from the library. Less than a week after both events I have unsubscribed from the blog and returned the book. Nothing terrible about either, just nothing new.

I hate to say this and sound unsupportive of someone who seems so genuine and hard-working, but I can't really relate to Tina and that made her book hard to slog through. Her recipes might be fine but, honest...more

A semi-motivational book, but at the end I'm not sure if I'm more motivated to be healthy and fit, or motivated to start a blog. She does have a few tricks to help with a healthy lifestyle: put health foods in clear containers at eye levels; put treats up high or at the back of cupboards; put garlic powder, ground ginger, cumin, and sea salt by your food prep area for low-calorie ways to add lots o flavor; if you're at a party and snacking, only pick what you're not capable of making.

Apart from...more

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book. Prior to buying the book I had read reviews, and found that there were some mixed opinions.

I started reading the book with an open-mind. I read Tina's blog, so I already enjoy her writing style.

I really enjoyed the book. It opened my eyes to some things that could stand to be changed in my own life.

At times I felt a little inadequate compared to Tina- She seems to have such a handle on her life, and mine is out of control. But, I realiz...more

I enjoyed this book. I am currently trying to lose weight, (who isn't), and it went along perfectly with what I want to try to do. The recipes are delicious and although there were some ingredients that I have to buy specifically for them, they are normal for the most part.
I like the style of the chapters and the way they just "talk". It makes the book seem more real and the lifestyle that Haupert has made more doable to the average person, but it also was a little hard to follow at times, just...more

I was really disappointed with this book and the worst part is that I knew I would be when I picked it up. Actually no, before that. I knew I would be disappointed when I heard she was writing it. I feel bad but I really tried to be supportive of a fellow food blogger. She really just isn't a writer. It wasn't witty or funny, there wasn't eloquent narrative, it is exactly like her blog which I have read off and on for the past couple years and lately, mostly off. And picking up this book reminde...more

Some of the recipes were okay, but nothing revolutionary that I haven't seen before, and for a nutritionist she sure doesn't include any type of breakdown of the nutritional info. The writing was annoying and terrible. I'm so sick of everyone with a blog getting a book without the basic knowledge and talent of how to write. it's insulting. The whole balance theory is all well and good and I strive for this myself, but I couldn't relate to why she was losing weight in the first place (her wedding...more

I could relate to Haupert while reading several of her stories and struggles; however, I felt it was a bit repetitive. It could've been about 50 pages shorter if some of the repetitive information was taken out. I also felt like a lot of her recipes were similar to one another. I wish she would've picked the best of the best of her favorites to include. All in all, this was a quick read with some helpful information but I'm not sure who the target audience would be. I think people that enjoy rea...more

I enjoy reading the Carrot n' Cake blog, so naturally I loved this book. I particularly like the author's approach of an "day in the life" view taken on each subject. She showcases the challenges of maintaining a healthy life style with examples from her life. She is honest about her personal struggles and provides great insight and tips for how to tackle daily obstacles. She suggests very simple ways to implement healthy changes without being too preachy. She includes recipes ranging from sangr...more

Weird book. I'm going to resist the great temptation to psychoanalyze the author or to say any number of things that would sound mean. There are 58 recipes in this book and only 16 of them are for anything I'd call real regular food--half of it is baked goods (mostly cookies and muffins), and the rest is drinks, smoothies, desserts, breakfasts that sound like desserts, etc. Draw from that what you like about the author and her issues. And I always roll my eyes at anyone who goes on about what a...more

This book was practically an exact duplication of her blog carrotsncake.com. Save yourself the money and just read her blog. With so many "healthy living" books out there, this one hardly brings anything unique or interesting to the table. She really doesn't give any valuable advice to people that have a general knowledge of how to lose weight or workout, but for someone completely new to a healthy diet and exercise you may find some tips and recipes on her blog, and the best thing about that is...more

In "Carrots 'n' Cake," food blogger Tina Haupert offers tips on maintaining a healthy balance in food consumption. Overeat at dinner? Start tomorrow off with a workout and light, healthful breakfast to feel better, she writes. Know you tend to indulge after a long night of drinking? Set a limit before your night out begins. And so on.
She illustrates these principals with belabored but airily chatty anecdotes from her own life. It's a quick read, a bit of mental junk food on the topic of health....more

As a few others said, it is a very easy and enjoyable read. I loved getting to know Tina better through her book.

I loved all of her healthy-living advice, from having cocktails at home to anticipating splurges. She even includes a bunch of great recipes. I love the recipes that are in smaller portions, like the microwave oatmeal cookie.

Used to read the C&C blog before she became super annoying with Cross Fit, and I won this book from one of her giveaways. For a free book it could have been worse but it definitively isn't prize winning literary material. I keep the book around for a couple of the recipes that were actually pretty good.

I read Tina's blog everyday, so I was excited to hear more of her tips and recipes in her book. Although I admire her for her organization in life & work, I felt that her book was scatterbrained and her thoughts were often incomplete. However, it was still interesting to hear more about Tina's journey to a healthy lifestyle and I recommend this book to people that enjoy reading Carrots 'N' Cake (the blog).

At first I really liked the author's sense of humor and I thought I'd really enjoy the book. It doesn't have enough information for me to really consider it a diet book, but there aren't any huge life events or trials that would make me consider it a memoir.

It seemed more like a really long, uninformative essay on her successes and failures in dieting. Not so great as a full length book.

I got this as an advanced copy, and just didn't like it. First off, it was written in blog style (same reason I didn't prefer Julie & Julia), so it was hard to stay interested. And most important, I just don't know if I really found the health benefit of most of the recipes. I think there are better books out there if you're looking for good food with a few bad ingredients removed.

While I adore Tina's blog Carrots n Cake, the book was subpar. I am looking forward to trying many of her recipes included in the book, but as for the rest of it- I think I was just expecting something more. I will stick to her blog from now on!
Esther
It was a decent, quick read. I don't feel it really provided that much useful advice overall though. The recipes intrigue me though - that is the most useful aspect of the book in my opinion.
Janae
I really enjoyed trying the various recipes in the book. It was also nice to know that someone else experiences the same food issues that I do!
Pat
I won this book as a Goodreads first read. I was not familiar with Tina Haupert's blog so had no expectations of the book. I very much enjoyed M. Haupert's chatty writing style. Her healthy living suggestions are sensible, and many of her recipes look like something I might try making. All in all, time well spent in reading "Carrots 'n' Cake".
Jillian
Love the frank and honest approach of this book, and how the well-rounded approach to food, fitness, and life is approachable for so many

I really enjoy this blog, so I enjoyed the book too. Quick read- good for airplanes and by the pool, and that's where I read it!

Written in a format similar to her blog. If you like Tina's blog, you'll like this book :)
