This book wasn't as good as the others. The Edgar Allan Poe parts were interesting but that's not why I bought the book. I bought it because of the way Ms. Fairstein puts together mysteries and her leads solve them. I loved how she usually has them interact both professionally and personally. But in this book it felt stilted and forced. I felt she had so many mysteries going on at once that she had to tie together that she didn't really do any of them justice. Great. My first Fairstein (I also have Death Dance, review coming soon, if this anything to go by!).
I read it in two sittings. Poe redivivus, serial rapes, beatngs, a death or two and enough procedural detail to keep it flowing nicely. A twisty, literate plot, with shifting suspects; sassy, hard-nosed banter, with a marshmallow center in the case of Coop and Mike, the lead investigators. I really like this author. She writes good mysteries (way better than Cornwell in my opinion) and I really like the main character in the books-Alexandra Cooper. What I really loved about this book was that the murders happen like in Edgar Allen Poe stories. There is a secret society who is in to Poe and they are trying to figure out who in that society is committing the murders. But what is cool about it is that you learn some history of Poe-about his life and family. Very interesting!

After seeing an article on Linda Fairstein in the University of Virginia alumni magazine, I decided to read one of her books. She served in the Manhattan D.A.'s office for 25 years and then retired to writing. She starts each project with extensive research on some aspect of Manhattan and then builds a story around it. For example, Entombed involved Edgar Alan Poe. The result is an intelligent, informative, and well-written mystery. I'll read others by her.

Assistant DA Alexandra Cooper and her partners, detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace, investigate the murder of a young woman after her bones are found behind a brick wall in a house that used to belong to Edgar Allan Poe.
Highly recommend this series. Fairstein again finds an interesting and informative subject for the basis of her plot. Blends the pacing of a thriller and the literary background of Poe's stories.

Alexandra Cooper investigates a series of murders, old and new, which seemed tied to an old case of the Silk Stocking rapist and a fan of Edgar Allan Poe.
Readable, but a bit forced. Definite knowledge of the city and the history, as well as the DA’s office, make the story interesting but the plot is a bit unbelievable. Recommended for a quick read, though.

I really enjoy Linda Fairstein's Alex Cooper novels. I like the personal experience she brings to the novels, I like the relationship between the main characters: Alexandra Cooper, Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace, and I like the history of New York that encompasses every novel.
I liked this book with the introduction of the Silk Stocking Rapist.

I enjoyed the Poe elements and the description of places I never knew existed in New York. However I felt the characters were very one dimensional, even the tragedy that befalls one of them didn't elevate the emotions I felt for them. The plotting felt a little torturous, too many threads trying to be pulled together.

Loved the connections to Poe in this novel. Mike Chapmen is one of my all time favorite supporting characters. Sometimes the fact that Alex is always needing to be saved by him is a little irritating, but otherwise it's a fun read.

Poe fans, here is some light reading for you about the master of the macabre. Facts and fiction mixed together about Poe make this one I'll get for the school library--I think a number of kids who like Poe will enjoy this one.

Good strong character. Good book. I liked how there was stuff tied into the crime from Edgar A. Poe's works. I'd like to own all the books by this author. I will definatly recommend it and read it again.

Fun, like a really long episode of Law and Order, and attractive if you're fond of Edgar Allen Poe references. But not as well-written as a really long episode of Law and Order, so there's that.

A mystery surrounding Edgar Allan Poe???? Can it get any better? This is the only novel I have read by this author but it was fast-paced and I loved the historical content of it.

This is my favourite Linda Fairstein book, I enjoy reading about Alex, Mike and Mercer. The books are well written and you never know who the killer is until the end.

Better than most of hers but nowhere near as good as Cornwell at her best ie her early books.
