In this third book about fourth-grader Effie, she can't wait to go to camp so she can learn to swim, hang out with her two best friends, and win the Outstanding Camper of the Week medal. Unfortunately, it all goes awry when she finds out her big sister is going to camp, too, to work in the kitchen. Then, the moment Effie arrives a strong bout of homesickness swamps her. And things just get more tangled - and enjoyable - from there.

A girl goes away on a class trip for a week. It will be the first time she is away from home and her mother is going on a business trip the same week. Her sister has know where to go, so she has to be part of the staff at camp. Her mom gave her sister orders to not talk to her sister at all and to treat her like another child. I enjoy varying my reading diet with both children's and Young Adult books. It takes me back to that time and appreciate, as in this case, a fun story that has several touching moments. We all can remember what it's like to be away from home for the first time. While I thought some of the dialogue was not what you would expect from an 11 yr old (meaning some of the phrases were too mature), still it made me feel good to read about people helping out others, and remembering how lovely childhood c ...more
