A Slight Trick of the Mind is yet another retelling of the Sherlock Holmes mythology. As a younger person, I loved all of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, so I suppose it's no surprise that I've been drawn to some of the retellings that are floating around the fiction shelves from this century. Last year, I read a bunch of the Laurie King mysteries that feature an aging Sherlock Holmes partnered with Mary Russell. I thought that A Slight Trick of the Mind would be in a similar vein. I was totall...more

Kedua, kasus tingkah laku aneh seorang istri. Lalu terjadilah kasus ketiga di peternakan lebahnya. Sembari mengenang kembali kasus yang terjadi, Hol...more

This book was originally titled "A Slight Trick of the Mind," but it presumably was re-titled and re-released because the title you see in Good Reads is the one that showed up when I typed the original into the search. As a rule, I don’t like pastiches in general and Sherlock Holmes pastiches in particular. They’re never good. So why am I giving this one a five star rating? Because it really isn’t a pastiche no more than it’s a mystery. It’s more of a literary effort of ...more

Oh, this was heartwrenching. I have a soft spot in my heart for cranky old men, and the Sherlock depicted here was no exception. Here was a strong man watching his own mind and talents begin to fade, and I can think of no sadder fate for Holmes. There are three interwoven stories in this book: a trip Holmes takes to Japan under the pretense of adventuring with a fellow bee enthusiast, Holmes' home life with his servant and her son, Roger, and an old case that Holmes is writing his version of....more

I have adored Sherlock Holmes since I was a little girl and I had posted in my bedroom the list of clues that he used to figure out someone's "station in life". Like what their shoes looked like; what their fingernails looked like, etc. I loved that lesson of paying attention to the small details to make the larger picture more meaningful. In this book, we are at the end of Sherlock's life. What would it be like if you were Sherlock and you had been so wise and tactful and revered ...more

It's just a different side of Sherlock Holmes that you will find in his writings. Not as the best detective as he used to be. But more as the usual retired old man with his new life after retire.

Tapi disini, kita jadi seperti melihat s...more

A pastiche about Sherlock Holmes in as an elderly. There is no difficult crimes to solve here. A brave pastiche, as it describes Holmes falls in love with a woman, but not Irene Adler! Some Sherlockians speculate that Adler is Holmes' true love, while other say that Holmes is not capable to fall in love. But this book tells Holmes deeply madly in love with another woman.

That is why this book only receive three stars from me. Otherwise I could give four.

This is a book about one of my all time favorite detectives, Sherlock Holmes. He is now in his 90's and semi-retired. He cares for his bees, writes in his journals and is now pondering the full meaning of life as his glorious mind begins to leave him.
He has lost Dr. Watson, Mycroft and Mrs Hudson. He his now alone in the world and yet still seeks his inner peace.

I found the book a tough read as the author jumps from story to story but in the end, if you can hang with the book that long, yo...more

buku tentang Sherlock Holmes yang keren banget!
Walaupun Mitch Cullin bukan pengarang langsung Sherlock Holmes, Cullin bisa menceritakan Holmes dengan baik.
Semuanya dapet deh! angkuhnya Holmes, gaya sopan santunnya British people, dan banyak detil-detil lainnya.

I'm not a big fan of Mr Holmes, my husband is. So far, I've read only one Holmes' short case, The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge, and I think it's not that great.
This book is about Sherlock Holmes, yes it is. But it's not written by Conan Doyle. The writer put a lot of drama in this book. It's about the old Holmes, lonely and sad. There are some mysteries in this book (3? I forget) but none of them is complicated.

recommends it for: Not just for Holmes fans or mystery readers, at all.
A welcome standout in the crowded world of Holmes pastiches, by a versatile writer I first encountered out in Jim Thompson territory with his verse noir, Branches. Peeling back the layers of the nonagenarian Holmes, perhaps more like Banville's The Untouchable or...? (I'd love to see a similar humanization of James Bond in his dotage, which would be just about now.) Sad, beautiful.

akhirnya selesai juga baca novel ini.

aku ndak begitu mengenal sherlock holmes. as long as I know, dia adalah detektif hebat, banyak dikutip di banyak buku, komik, cerpen, film, kata dsb.

If you have any Sherlock Holmes interest, there is apparently a whole world of alternative stories by other authors that I never knew existed. This is the only one I've read and it captures a frail old man version of Holmes; he's lonely, a little sad, and that tone is pervasive throughout the book. I tend to like books like that. It's a short book and I thought well written.

I was very disappointed in this book, given the glowing reviews from some very reputable reviewers. I found it to be unfocused and not particularly insightful, although the author tries mightily at the end to give the book some weight. The most positive thing about it was a passage about why Sherlock found honeybees so compelling.

IMHO lho yaa.

Sherlock Holmes, in his last years, remembers his distant past and his recent trip to Japan. He is obsessed with beekeeping and builds a friendship with his housekeeper's son. There's a mild thread of romantic mystery, but I didn't find this terribly interesting. To be fair, though, I'm not a Sherlock Holmes fan.

There are many absurdities, although you could see that even you had the world in your hand, your life is quite empty without learn to love and honest to yourself that you love sbd. That's what I see through the story.
