Oppenheim never met an adjective he didn't like. He heaps them up in drifts, paragraph after paragraph, page after weary page. The plot is a little time-worn now, but was no doubt fresher when published. Even so, I guessed at the twist early on, and then found plowing through all those adjectives even more tiresome. Not bad for literature of the time, but not the best first introduction to it, either.
