I came upon Schopenhauer unexpectedly. I had heard of him before in passing, probably mentioned in connection with pessimism or in a laundry list of German philosophers. While reading Doubt: A History I came upon this:
"Schopenhauer did not believe in God, but he did not believe in science either. To him, trying to learn about reality by figuring out the laws of nature (as they appear to us) is doomed. Yet he believed there was a worthy pursuit of truth, through art."
And that is the moment I de

Rafael Bechelli
In this short compendium Schopenhauer, among other things, heavily criticizes obscurity in writing. A thing so common in philosophy and in soft sciences in general.

He claims that a man who have gained full knowledge on the subject would find no difficulties in communicating it as simple and clear as possible, and only when the subject is partially understood that one needs to fill the gaps with a rhetoric shroud that renders it impenetrable and foggy as a way to hide his own ignorance. He links

I liked when Schopenhauer said that bad taste is a sign of a dull or confused mind. I agree because when people have bad taste in clothes, its because they do not know what is good and try to wear eclectically many things which are considered cool in order to make them look fashionable. I believe taste should be very refined and simple, and not overdone to the point of looking or being very tacky.

Lots and lots of critics. Schopenhauer have plenty of good points on the (mis)use of language, but he could have been less repetitive.

Alberto
The first two essays (on authorship, on style) are pretty good. The rest is a mixed bag. And Schopenhaeur has an obnoxious beef with several near-contemporaries such as Lessing and Hegel, which make some of the essays annoying (-1 star). Kudos for calling Tritam Shandy and Don Quixote two of the best novels ever (+1 star).

Schopenhauer is the only philospher whose essays I've ever read voluntarily. He writes better than many of his ilk.
