The three-month stay of the liner and its 650 German officers and crew created quite a stir among the mansions of Bar Harbor. Into this rich tapestry, Paretti weaves plausible love matches between a prominent socialite and the ship's second officer, a Bar Harbor governess and the captain, even the town librarian and Cecile's purser.

The best part about this novel is that it's based on a true story (about my beloved Bar Harbor!), and Paretti seems to have gotten the historical facts right. But while the cover claims this is "a novel of romance in old Bar Harbor," the story seems to lack a bit of...well, romance.

Mostly I love this book for the Bar Harbor setting & history.

since I love Bar Harbor, ME, my husband got me this for Christmas. It started out really strongly with an intriguing hook, then it slowed considerably about half way through. Oddly, while the characters were all ok, I never really started cheering for any one of them; well maybe Captain Pollock.

A very interesting look at WWI and America's early stance on the war. I've only read about the horrors once the USA got involved in the warfare.
