As much as I love historical romances, there is only so much of the history I can take. Which explains why perhaps, I did not enjoy this book as much as I thought I would.

If I'm not mistaken By Arrangement is my first Madeline Hunter read, and I chose this not lightly - because when I checked her website I loved almost all the blurbs of her books! They were exactly what I would want to read about. Surprisingly though, I seemed to find More...

By Arrangement has more human characters, and more human conflicts, that most romances - and I find that often, more realism equals less romance. I think that is the case here, where the dark atmosphere and gritty portrayal of David and Christiana's relationship made the book more intense, and more satisfying, but also less fun.

Hunter writes very well and I think she should get major kudos for writing about a period that is generally ignored - late medieval/early Renaissance - and for More...

As always, Hunter's hisorical details are on target, but I wasn't impressed with the characters. I'm sure they rang true for their time period. I wish they'd been more attractive inside as they were outside and I yearned for something a bit more unsual. This story has been done too many times before, especially the justification for David de Abyndon's attributes due to aristocratic blood lines being revealed at the end with a ho-hum twist. I found myself scanning to get done.

O enredo deste More...

I read this book because everyone raved about Madeline Hunter's historicals, and this one in particular. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed this book. I thought David was a great hero. He was the kind of man who did what he set his mind to, and didn't worry too much about what other people thought. He was an 'actions speak louder than words' kind of man. Even though his bride Christiana's reputation has been ruined by a fairly innocent dalliance with a knightly courtier that she More...

I didn't expect to like this book so much when I started reading it. So it kind of took me by surprise. It's one of those books you still remember even after a good while has passed. I would recommend it to anyone who likes romance and especially to historical romance lovers.

I really dug the politics in this book. Yes, a romance, but it's focus is nearly more on the history than the romance, which is something I enjoy quite a lot about Hunter's books.

Usually books of this genre aren't very memorable, but this one was. Enjoyable.

This book started out sounding like something I would love - a romance novel with a medieval setting that wasn't somewhere on the Scottish border!?! Historically accurate details! (I think).
The main characters however felt really flat to me. The plots David has created for himself were really confusing, and seemed more involved than could be expressed in a story that's supposed to focus on two lovebirds. In fact, romance seemed really half-hearted. She likes him because he makes her fe More...

Started out strong, very good characters, nice plot, good flow. the end got a little stupid with the misunderstandings and stubbornness. Book would have been much better 50 pages shorter.

I liked this book because it wasn't just a romance, but had some good political themes to draw on. A bit racy for me though...

Quite possibly my favorite romance novel. I just love to hate David.
I was on my way to Houston when I stopped in the airport gift shop and picked up this book. It looked intriguing becuase I'm interested in Medieval times. I felt Hunter did a good job at describing the times and how things were done.
I enjoyed the heroine but thought she was a little too naive at times. Although, I think Hunter had this in mind for her.
There is some mystery to this book and that was somethi More...

The story of a young noblewoman forced to marry a merchant she considers beneath her. She spends the first part of the book believing she is in love with another, but eventually grows to love her husband, who is not all that he seems. A slow, sort of subtle love develops between the two, not bad, but not great.
