When Baron Fulke of Erlegh is ordered to take a bride, he grudgingly begins a journey to fulfill his duty to his king. In a time when marriages were arranged based on status, the Baron travels to Kenwick for a two-fold purpose. One, to take Warin of Kenwick under his wing to train and the other, to discuss with Sir Everard of Kenwick the possibility of taking his daughter as a bride. Once he arrives, plans go awry as Fulke first spies the beautiful Reina. Though Reina is the daughter of Sir Ever...more
A Knight of Silence Review
By Candace Bowen Early
This book takes place in medieval times around the time of King Henry the 1st and is filled with mystery romance suspense and backstabbing.
Picture it... King Henry's son using a woman to spy on a suitor of Empress Matilda. A deaf woman torn from her betrothed and mocked by all and held against her will. Can her husband and brother rescue her from a tyrannical king hellbent on using this poor woman or will she be doomed to a life of servitude? I wo...more

If you like historical romance, this one is just a treat. The author did her job in sweeping me off to a time when knights swore their allegiance to protect their ladies, their lieges, and their kings, when chivalry abounded, and courtly love flourished. The setting, language, and actions of the characters (as far as I know, not being a history buff) were right on cue, without being so over the top that I couldn't follow. Many hours of research went into this story, and it shows. I'll have to t...more
The intrigues and insecurities of medieval court life form the background to this very readable novel. King Henry 1 of England, the Conqueror’s son, takes advantage of a noblewoman’s disability when he forces her to spy on Geoffrey of Anjou, suitor of the Empress Matilda.
Rescued from a silent, futile life in a convent by a man unable to love, deaf Reina is abruptly torn from her new husband’s side and plunged into a precarious existence at court, shunned by hostile nobles and scorned by the shal...more

I read this book and was struck by the author's authenticity, as if she is a rather well-preserved 900 year old. Not many authors dare to cast their heroines with any sort of affliction, but it is what makes us all cheer for Reina. It makes us truly believe in the romance between she and Fulke (whom, heck, I'd fall in love with!)
All too often romances are served up on a platter. This book makes you earn the romance and gratifies the reader that much more! Bravo.

A gripping novel that is underpinned by the author's meticulous research/knowledge of the period. This book has everything and could sit in almost any genre - adventure - conflict - love interest etc... The pace is just right in that a reader doesn't want to put the book down and yet, when does can pick it up and become immersed in it in an instance.
Didn't get into this.. It simply isn't my kind of book. The love at first sight, the stirrings in the loins, the experienced man, virginal woman.. I just don't dig that stuff.
