"Make Mine a Bad Boy" is the second installment in the Deep in the Heart of Texas series by Katie Lane. I was plesently surprised with this book. When I recived this novel, I thought I would have a hard time reading it all the way through..I guess I judged the book by it's cover and title. I'm now glad I didn't. Why would I be hesitant of a hot cowboy novel, you might ask? Only because I haven't really read in that genre before. Yes, I read Historical, Highlander, Paranormal, YA and Steampunk romances, but I really haven't made it towards Cowboys yet. I'm glad I did though, because it really has a new take on the romance. When I visit Texas(and I will one day.) I hope to be greeted with the famous southern hospitalily I've come to love reading about.

Anyways, on to the actual review.
Hope is the town sweetheart. Everyone loves her and everyone excepts the best of her. No, she's not the quite beauty queen you'd think, she's actually the complete oppisite. Loud mouth, take no crap from nobody, with a heart of gold is Hope and everyone loves her for it. All eyes are always on Hope. Except the man she was expected to Marry.
Hopes highschool sweetheart marry's her TWIN sister. No it doesn't have the kind of drama you'd think, with that happening, but it does make hope upset. I'm glad there wasn't too much emphsas and arguing on that, mostly because she saved all the sas and back talk for Colt.
Colt Lomax is a one of a kind. Here's the shorter decription on him when he first enters the novel:
"But although he had a body that could tempt a Bible banger on Sunday,it was his face that held Hope's attention, a face made up of tanned skin, hard angles, and a thin layer of black stubble."
How could you not be temted to read on, right?
I actually really liked Colt. Yes, he could be a jerk, but it was mostly like a young boy picking on the girl he likes at school. (Which is talked about a bunch in this novel as well. lol)

Over all, I really enjoyed this novel. The tension between Hope and Colt was refreshing. Each time you thought they would finally admit to wanting eachother, the author would throw in a twist. If biker cowboys, lustly scenes and charming southren novels are your thing, then this novel is the one for you!(less)

Make Mine a Bad Boy is book two in the A Deep Heart of Texas series by Katie Lane, and I have to say with each book this series gets better. I originally started out reading book one and two so I could read and review book three. I am so glad I got my hands on this series!! They are an absolute delight. I am a born and raised Louisiana gal, but have spent a lot of my time over the border in Texas with family. I have to say Katie captured a Texas town almost perfectly. Some of it is a tad stereotypical, but I think it adds to the story.

We first met Hope in the last quarter of the first book, and to say she is the sweet heart of Bramble is almost an understatement. She is a fireball of energy and temper, and uses that feistiness to hide her insecurities. At the beginning you kind of want to shake her and say get over yourself. The book opens with her as the maid-of-honor at her twin sister Faith’s wedding to Slate, and Hope is none too happy about the wedding, although she does try to hide it. Slate was supposed to be HER backup plan, and wait for her to come back. She kinda ignores the fact that he is more like a brother to her, because he is the perfect shield against the feeling she has always had for the town bad boy, Colt Lomax. Hope and Colt are oil and water, but they come together with the chemistry of fire and gasoline. Lawd have mercy! They end up half nekid before they even realize it, BUT have bad luck when it comes to timing. They get interrupted in the craziest of places.

Colt was from the wrong side of the tracks, and he let the town’s opinion of him form his bad boy image. He didn’t let his self believe that he could be good enough for Hope, so he was the one to give her hell growing up. He didn’t want to stick around town, and watch the only woman he loved marry the town golden boy. So he left town right after high school, but did the town think he was out there making a good living. NO they thought he just got out of prison. Little does the town know that he is a successful custom motorcycle builder in California. Can the town and Hope forget his past to see the man he is today?? Can he open his self up to the possibly of rejection, and tell Hope how he has always felt about her??

I absolutely love this series. Like with the first book the town’s people play as much a part of the story as the main characters. They over hear a conversation between Faith and Slate, and due to miscommunication come to think Hope is pregnant and jilted by the father. They hire a bounty hunter to head out to California, and track down the missing daddy. This leads to some funny scenes! This book had me laughing out loud, and grabbed onto my heart hard. I have to say I am a lot in love with Colt myself, but who wouldn’t love a sexy bad boy cowboy with tattoos that rides a motorcycle!!!!! I highly recommend this book and series!! (less)

Hope Scroggs is feeling sorry for herself at her twin sisters wedding. Faith got the guy, the house, the life she always dreamed about. Hope is the sweetheart of Bramble, a small town inhabited by a coterie of bumbling but lovable, small town people who don't have much else to do but worry their little hearts about other people's business. As Hope is the sweetheart of the town, it is their duty to worry about her and keep informed about her comings and goings.

In the midst of all of this, the town bad boy comes stormin into town on his motorcycle. Colt and Hope have lots of history and issues and chemistry but it wasn't enough to woo me into enjoying this book.

Basically I didn't like the West Texas town of Bramble. Or it's citizens. Furthermore, I'm not certain the author liked the people of Bramble either. Bramble is your typical romancenovelville small town where people have very little common sense, and do nothing but gossip. For example the town gets thinking that hope is pregnant with twins. So they get a bounty hunter (someone's relative) to go hunt down with a shot gun the man who got Hope pregnant. I think this was supposed to be funny as the characters the bounty hunter brought back were all very unlikely impregnators. Also Hope keeps assuring them she's not pregnant but naturally they don't listen to her. They were so outrageous and neither Hope nor Colt were outrageous I felt like Hope and Colt were looking at me and rolling their eyes at the town's people.

I was also irrationally irritated by Colt's adoration of fall because of the peaches in Fredericksburg. Peaches peter out in August so come fall it's not peach season.

But Hope isn’t as happy to see Colt and he thought she would be and since he’s teased her mercilessly since they were both young he just can’t stop himself from antagonizing her. But what do they really feel about each other? And when Hope finds out she’s pregnant where will that leave them?

I didn’t read book one in this series and I think that put me off the first part of the book. There were more than several references to things that happened in book one and I didn’t have a clue what they were talking about. I would recommend reading book one before you move into book 2. Once I got past my confusion the story was pretty entertaining.

Hope was the sweetheart of Bramble and could do no wrong but really, the way the townsfolk were portrayed it appeared they were dumber than dirt. More than a few times I wanted to crawl into the book and yell at the people and tell them to get a clue. But Hope was very confused. She wasn’t sure about her feelings for this twin sister (from book 1) that had shown up much less what she was feeling about the situation when her sister married Slate. Then there are her feelings for Colt that she’s never really admitted to herself and I found that confusing. I guess I can understand denying your feelings in public but to yourself? Can someone live in denial to themselves that long? I guess anything is possible. But I did feel for Hope as the town expected so much of her and she was just trying to live her life as best she could.

Colt was definitely a bad boy. He knew how to take the bad and go one step further. But he was really a nice person at heart. No, he didn’t want to face certain things and took off a couple of times to try to deal with his thoughts but he always came back – which gave him stars next to his name in my book. He had gone out and made something of himself and even though the town he grew up in still didn’t see him for who he was, he was really only trying to get one person to see him and that was Hope.

I think I would have liked to have seen how Colt and Hope could get along and be together before they had their HEA. Yes, they could have sex and be happy little campers but we were never really shown the pair together and being happy. Three quarters of the book had them antagonistic towards each other and the other half having sex. Though they cared for each other we just didn't get to see enough of that side of their relationship.

Overall it was a cute story but a little redneck for my liking – not necessarily with Hope and Colt but definitely with the supporting characters.

It never worked out for me, but you'll have to see if it worked out for Hope. Then there is the situation with the twin sister who can read her mind and she never knew she existed before this trip home and she married the high school sweetheart while Hope was out of town....

Colt's character made this book for me. There's a certain hidden vulnerability to his character that just melted my heart. After having read and thoroughly enjoyed Lane's first book in this series, I was really looking forward to Hope's story. Unfortunately it just didn't pan out as well. While it is filled with all the small town wackiness and fun that inhabited the first, what promised to continue in the feisty town sweetheart and the resident bad boy, disintegrated into two people who spent most of the book ridiculing and calling each other nasty names then running away at each sign of trouble. I finished it! I finished Make Mine a Bad Boy by Katie Lane. If you remember my review about book one, Going Cowboy Crazy, I won this in a cowboy giveaway from Sarah, The Brazen Bookworm.

It was wonderful. I wasn't sure that after "falling in love" with Slate Calhoun I'd be able to read this when he wasn't exactly as prominent a feature. I also wasn't sure I'd enjoy reading about the other twin's life. She hadn't made that great an impression on me in the last book so I was wary when I picked this up.

I was wrong on both counts. I loved Hope Scroggs. And to be honest, I'd take Colt Lomax over Slate Calhoun any day. Slate was football coach who always did was expected of him until Faith came along. But Colt is a bad boy with an enormous heart of gold, he's just afraid to show anyone. We see him transform in this book from someone who just doesn't give a rat's butt to someone who seems to just be exploding with feeling. ::sigh::

Reading this I found myself getting angry at Hope for not just melting into a puddle as soon as Colt looked at her. But it wouldn't have made for a very long book if she had. Not to mention I probably wouldn't have liked it half as much as I did.

And now a quote from Colt:

I heard you, but that doesn't mean I understand what she has to do with my hangdog look - not that I have a hangdog look - but if I did, she wouldn't have anything to do with it.
Poor thing was trying to backpedal. As if it wasn't obvious to everyone.

I love how redeeming this is. The surprise twists. How the town may seem clueless, but maybe some of them aren't completely. I do like Faith's role in this book, even though it's small as Hope is the main character. I love Hope's fire and determination. And Colt's heart. It's just wonderful.

I definitely recommend this book to everyone (over the age of 18). I think it may have made it on to my favorites list. I just wish I'd had book three in the Deep In The Heart of Texas series, Catch Me a Cowboy, so that I didn't have to wait to read it. I hate waiting. I'm really impatient.

Now I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first.Like I said in my first review I wasnt a big fan of Hope but I loved Colt. Her attitude bothered me and I couldn’t see why people let her get away with things the way they do because I really wanted to slap her off the face off the earth. I did grow to like Hope towards the end of the book.

With a heartbreaking upbringing, Colt has finally made something of himself though he still carries a chip on his shoulder thinking of himself still as that kid from the wrong side of the tracks, and having Hope continually shut him down while making puppy dog eyes at the town hero doesn’t help his confidence. Yet he still rallied around his town and it’s citizens when they needed it, taking the role of leader and surprising them all. Colt’s smart, sexy, quick-witted, funny, determined; well, everything about him was endearing.
Hope on the other hand, I didn't care for. Though by the end I warmed to her somewhat, I still thought she was a loud, annoying, spoiled brat with a bad attitude. And really, the town’s whole idolism with her left me baffled.
Colt & Hope’s relationship was a roller coaster ride though and because of my interest in Colt, really captivated my heart.
The story is fast paced with an easy plot, entertaining dialogue and a quirky little town. And this crazy town of Bramble, Texas really kept me on my toes, wondering what in the world they were going to do next in effort to ‘help’ their little Hope along.
Despite the fact that I wasn’t at all into the heroine; the hero, prior main characters, side characters and surroundings really made up for that and I enjoyed Make Mine a Bad Boy immensely. I’m hoping Lane has another book planned for this delightful series.(less)

I really loved this story. I was taken with Colt from the beginning. You could tell that he was struggling from the start with what he wanted and how to get it. But no one was struggling more than Hope. I loved her character, a superstar in the eyes of her hometown but nothing more than a waitress in Hollywood. This humorous story would be great as a stand alone story but is a perfect second book in the Deep in the Heart of Texas series. I liked this book just as much as the first book in the series.

The one thing he has never been able to get away from is the vivacious Hope; the high school beauty queen, destined to never look his way. When he bumped into her in Hollywood, she was feeling vulnerable and fell into bed with the smooth talking hottie. Thing is, it’s left a lasting impression on both of them and now Colt wants a repeat performance. With all the things that are going on her life, a quick roll in the hay is the last thing on Hope’s mind. But, can she really resist the bad boy of Bramble again? Especially when her body screams yes every time she sees him.

Hope Scroggs is not the most likeable character that I’ve ever met. A massive bundle of insecurities, she came across as brash and quite bitchy at times. The town had built her up to be the golden girl of Bramble and given her the belief that the world was her oyster. When Hollywood didn’t live up to expectations, her feelings of self worth hit rock bottom. Colt came along and made her feel pretty again and so they ended up in bed. The sex stirs up an unwanted attraction that sends Hope running back to the safety net of Bramble. Once there, she realises that the safety net has been whipped away. Her back up man Slate has got married to the identical twin she never knew she had, leaving her in a state of uncertainty. The only thing that’s certain now is the devotion of the townsfolk, but even that is under threat with the arrival of Faith. She is truly horrible to Faith in some ways; if they were children you would put it down to sibling rivalries, but we are talking about adults here. When Colt comes along, she fights tooth and nail to get him to leave town. Why? Because she’s as judgemental as the rest of the town and thinks he isn’t good enough. He’s a lowlife criminal who does what he wants and lives off his brother-in-laws money; he isn’t good enough for the sweetheart of Bramble, no matter how attractive she finds him! It really is quite laughable how wrong they have him pegged! By the end of the book, I did like her a little better. When she let’s go of all the judgement, she is actually quite open to seeing how misunderstood Colt is. The thing that p*ssed me off was that she had to have him prove how wrong she was before she actually stopped being such an ass with him.

Colt I like. He isn’t an angel, but he’s definitely badly treated. He is a walking talking tattooed hottie, but he is all marshmallow on the inside. Let’s list the charges the town have put against him. Bad boy? Check, but in a pant droppingly delicious way. Criminal? Not guilty. A leech? Nope, he has made himself successful. What I like about him is that he doesn’t deem the townsfolk worthy enough to know the truth; they gave up on him a long time ago, therefore are not worthy of his explanations. Still, I felt so sorry for him; he didn’t have an easy upbringing and those idiots made it worse! When the poop hits the fan for several of our main characters, he does everything in his power to help in any way he can. That’s when I knew that he wasn’t a bad-boy at all; he just wore the uniform! He starts to drop some of that anger over the course of the book and heal...it just makes him more delicious!

There is a massive similarity between this book and the last. The townsfolk are portrayed pretty much as idiots in both tales. They get an idea into their heads and won’t let it go, despite evidence to the contrary. In book one, they decided Faith was Hope and would not be told otherwise. In this one, it’s that Hope is pregnant, which leads to a Bounty Hunter being hired to track down the Father (Huh?). Although it is entertaining, the joke started to wear a little thin after a while. Whilst overall the book was a hit for me, this particular theme just made me tired!

A misunderstood bad boy falls in love with the town sweetheart in this lovely tale of love and rebirth. With tattoos, a motorbike and a heart of gold, Colt is a man that I’d like to meet 

I didn’t enjoy MAKE MINE A BAD BOY as much as I liked GOING COWBOY CRAZY. The main reason was Hope. Her attitude bothered me and I couldn’t see why people let her get away with things the way they do. I did like Hope more by the end of the book, but it took me awhile. Hope has always been the sweetheart of Bramble and she is afraid to admit that the life she sought in LA was not all it was cracked up to be. Colt has been running away from being the poor kid on the wrong side of town and being labeled a misfit and bad boy his whole life. No one really knows that he possesses an amazing skill of working with his hands and building custom bikes and that he actually owns his own business. He likes having the title of being a bad boy because it gives him a sense of freedom and he doesn’t really have anyone’s expectations to live up to. He can get up and go as he pleases! But neither one of them is ready to admit the attraction they have had for one another their whole lives. It seems that it has always been a love-hate relationship – Colt would always pick on the girl and tease her just like little boys do. I love the vulnerability that she gives to Colt while still portraying his bad boy charm. I think his tattoo is sexy too!

Whether Hope or Colt see it coming, fate has a way of stepping in and taking over their lives. Something unexpected scares the crap out of both of them, but it makes them come to terms with reality and about what they really want in their future.

This love story definitely has a different approach than that of Faith and Slate, but I enjoyed the darker side of it. Faith and Slate seemed to be more of the fairytale while Hope and Colt seem to be the Cinderella story.

By the end of the book, Katie Lane has you wrapped around her finger wanting more from the little town of Bramble, Texas.

The chance to pester Hope is always a plus. He is drawn to her and can barely help himself when he’s around her, but she is another one that will never let the past go. I absolutely love the crazy townspeople of Bramble. They literally make me laugh out loud. I love how they can have the facts right in front of them, yet they completely ignore them and make up their own conclusions and solutions.

You seriously can’t go wrong with this book. Colt is a great hero. He is enough of a bad boy to be sexy as hell, but sweet enough to make you wish he was yours. Hope is stubborn and spoiled, but she’s not mean. She’s very likeable and you find yourself rooting for her more and more with every turn of the page.

I did not like this one as much as the first book.
Hope was kind of a whiny brat. Throughout most of the story, she was grumpy and resentful of her newly found/met twin sister for 'messing up her life' and 'taking her man.' That got old really quick. Especially, as she was not in love with Slate and knew he wasn't in love with her - - ever!
I actually felt sorry for Colt and am not sure why he kept coming back for more.

I really enjoyed this book. This is a new to me author who will be on my list of books to buy in the future.

Make Mine a Bad Boy is the second book in the Deep in the Heart of Texas series and it was a wonderful romance. I love small town romance stories, they are filled with quirky and fun characters and when the town actually becomes part of the story, it makes it all the better. Brambel Texas is just that kind of place.
