Un giorno Beggiato, colpito da un tumore inguaribile, chiede la grazia e quindi necessariamente il perdono di Stefano. Ma quest’ultimo ha in mente solo la vendetta e architetta un piano machiavellico per portarla a esecuzione. Dove risiede veramente il male? Nel gesto irresponsabile di un omicida facilmente pronto a dimenticare la sua colpa o nell’ossessione di una vendetta capace di rivelare i lati più torbidi delle vittime? Dei due uomini protagonisti di questo romanzo, il colpevole e l’offeso, qual è il peggiore? Ed è più terribile la pena scontata a vita in carcere, con i rimorsi, la solitudine e le continue umiliazioni, oppure il castigo toccato alle vittime delle azioni criminali, la disperazione per aver perso i propri cari, che neppure la punizione dei responsabili può alleviare? Massimo Carlotto affronta queste questioni fondamentali della natura umana con lo stile asciutto e devastante che ne ha fatto un esempio unico nel panorama letterario italiano. Il ritmo dell’azione è serrato e travolgente, i dialoghi sono crudi e le riflessioni scarne ma essenziali. Non c’è traccia di verbosità, di fariseismo, di sentimentalismo, ma neppure di violenza gratuita o di desiderio di scandalizzare. C’è una visione del mondo che può sembrare spietata, ma che è semplicemente onesta, e c’è un’arte vera, rara, fatta di coraggio, immaginazione, ritmo e potenza espressiva.(less)

Questo libro, di cui avevo sentito davvero un gran parlare, secondo me non merita più di 3 stelline e mezzo.
La storia, che segue in parallelo le vite di due personaggi, la vittima di un atroce tragedia e il suo carnefice, è indubbiamente toccante, e permette di mettere a nudo delle tematiche forti: la disperazione e la solitudine, la difficile condizione (quanto mai attuale in questi giorni) delle carceri italiane, la malattia e il desiderio di vendetta. This is the first time I've ever tried Italian noir, and it's easy to see, after reading DEATH'S DARK ABYSS, why Massimo Carlotto is "widely considered Italy's foremost crime fiction writer" and "a major exponent of the Mediterranean Noir novel." It's also easy to understand why he writes noir about the Italian criminal justice system, given the fact that he served years of jail time for a murder he didn't commit, but was eventually given a presidential pardon.

Carlotto’s tale of a man who has lost his wife and child in an armed robbery gone wrong stands our perception of good and evil on its head and throws a glaring light on the heartlessness of Berlusconi’s Italy.

Silvano, the story’s victim, is a broken man. Following the senseless death of his loved ones, he gives up his high flying job and safe, middle class life to become a human shell who makes keys and fixes shoes in a shopping center, waiting for his time to run out, unable to overcome his grief. But when he hears that Raffaello, the killer who’s doing time for his family’s murder has cancer and is asking for clemency to be allowed to die a free man, he sees his chance for revenge and has high hopes that he will be able to track down a never apprehended accomplice of the crime that destroyed his life. With Raffaello out on the streets, Silvano uses the terminally ill gangster, his mother, a cop, a priest and a high society socialite with a guilt chip on her shoulder to track down the alleged accomplice.

The story is told by alternating protagonists, with Raffaello wanting to make the most of the time he has left and Silvano not caring for his life (not that of anyone else) which ended with the death of his wife and child. The violence unleashed by the victim is epic, repulsive and understandable, as conventional morality is stood on its head by extreme suffering. Soon, the reader is led into the darkest corners of Silvano’s mind where revenge and mayhem thrive, fester and burst forth.

The protagonists, all too real in both their humanity and monstrosity, show a healthy capacity for cruelty, as well as, in unexpected ways, for kindness. In the end, the reader is left with some of the incredible pain that all human beings endure as a consequence of their decisions which somehow never pan out the way they planned. This is what makes Death’s Dark Abyss a truly frightening and disturbing text. Carlotto does that rare thing, telling it like it is.

Incidentally, the author’s history reads like one of his novels. Massimo Carlotto, a left wing activist in his younger years, was framed by Italian police for a murder he did not commit, went on the run to South America and France, eventually turned himself in to Italian authorities and did five years in jail. In one of the biggest cases of miscarriage of justice in Italy, Carlotto, thanks to a long campaign by his supporters, eventually received a presidential pardon in 1993. Hardboiled indeed.

Qualche anno fa presentai a Bologna Arrivederci amore ciao, che aveva come protagonista Giorgio Pellegrini, "pentito" della lotta armata il cui percorso di formazione criminale iniziava proprio con la scelta del "pentimento" e terminava nella completa abiezione e disumanità.
In quell'occasione dissi che Arrivederci amore ciao restituiva all'espressione "noir" il suo significato letterale: dopo tanta letteratura beige, marroncina, "fumo di londra" e color cacarella, finalmente un romanzo italiano nerissimo, in cui non vi era redenzione, o meglio: vi era la "riabilitazione" dell'ex-compagno agli occhi della società borghese che aveva "tradito". Dal mio punto di vista, il contrario della redenzione.
Dissi che l'approccio di Carlotto era molto più interessante e utile della reiterazione di clichés come lo sbirro buono e onesto, tanto diffusi nella narrativa di genere dello Stivale. Di recente siamo arrivati alla pornografia pura e semplice, con certi libri scritti da sbirri, dei quali sospetto vengano pubblicati soltanto perché scritti da sbirri (si veda il caso di Michele Giuttari, tanto per non fare nomi).
Dicevo, è molto più interessante un autore che t'infila la merda dritta nelle narici, che ti costringe a identificarti (perché l'io narrante serve a questo) con un personaggio respingente e accompagnarlo nella sua scalata sociale in un ambiente codino e perbenista, attraversando con lui un Nord-Est corrotto e carente d'ossigeno.
L'oscura immensità della morte si spinge addirittura oltre. Sempre sullo sfondo di un Veneto invigliacchito ed esausto di vivere, Carlotto indaga quella che Giorgio Bocca nel suo libro sul 7 Aprile definiva: "la pietosa, comprensibile faziosità delle vittime e dei parenti".
Mi piace considerare questo libro un contributo anticipato al dibattito su memoria, colpa e pena scatenato dalla richiesta di estradizione in Italia di Cesare Battisti. A dire il vero non si tratta di un dibattito, visto che i media ospitano solo le certezze, le ignoranze e le "male fedi" del partito giustizialista e dei pasdaran della "vendetta infinita" ("opinionisti" affini al Presotto che compare nel romanzo), occultando qualunque parere critico.
Il rapinatore Raffaello Beggiato sta scontando l'ergastolo per avere perso la testa e ucciso due ostaggi presi durante una fuga, in seguito a una rapina andata male. Gli ostaggi erano un bambino di otto anni e sua madre.
Dopo quindici anni di prigione, Beggiato non è più la stessa persona, pur restando fedele a ciò che rimane del codice d'onore della malavita. Ignorando le offerte di sconti di pena, non ha rivelato il nome del suo complice mai catturato. E' colpevole di un crimine odioso, ripugnante, eppure ha una sua personale integrità.
Quando a Beggiato viene diagnosticato un cancro, il suo avvocato presenta un'istanza di grazia e - in subordine - una richiesta di sospensione della pena per malattia.
Per la grazia è necessaria l'approvazione dei parenti delle vittime, cosa assai discutibile e reminiscente di un ordinamento giuridico tribale. La vittima, la più lontana dai requisiti di distacco e lucidità necessari a somministrare la giustizia, è chiamata a decidere il destino del suo carnefice di un tempo. In questo modo è costretta a rivangare e rimuginare, e la sorte di una persona dipende dal risultato dei rimuginamenti.
Il parere viene chiesto a Silvano Contin, marito e padre delle due vittime, nel frattempo sprofondato in un pozzo senza fondo di rancore e desiderio di vendetta. Della moglie e del figlio, Contin tiene in casa solo le foto dell'autopsia, perché "il dolore mi [aiuta] a orientarmi nell'oscura immensità della morte".
Parte da qui la catena di eventi che porta la vittima di un tempo a improvvisarsi giustiziere e divenire a sua volta carnefice, e il carnefice di un tempo a divenire prima vittima e poi, con un colpo di scena, redentore che offre all'altro la "seconda possibilità", quella che a lui è stata negata.
In cosa consiste la "seconda possibilità", e in che misura cambierà l'ex-vittima e neo-carnefice? Per saperlo dovete leggere il libro, a cui la mia descrizione scritta a caldo non rende giustizia (oops!).
Si tratta senz'ombra di dubbio di un romanzo "a tesi". Nelle interviste, l'autore non sembra farne mistero. Tuttavia è molto meno didascalico di quanto si possa pensare e, tesi o no, se ne avvertiva la necessità, in un momento di massima strumentalizzazione del dolore dei "parenti delle vittime". Mica di tutte, s'intenda: è presentabile, notiziabile e "spendibile" soltanto il dolore di alcuni e non di altri. I parenti delle vittime del "terrorismo rosso" vanno benissimo; i parenti delle vittime delle stragi di stato sono già meno telegenici; i parenti delle vittime della repressione poliziesca (le centinaia di "morti da Legge Reale"), beh, quelli è meglio lasciarli stare, potrebbero mettersi in testa di sfruttare l'occasione per "fare politica".
Oggi le etichette "noir" e "thriller" vengono appiccicate a due romanzi su tre, gli editori italioti non si preoccupano se il genere s'inflaziona e lo scoppio della bolla è ormai imminente: a loro interessa l'uovo oggi, chi se ne fotte della gallina di domani? Dopodomani, torturati dai crampi della fame, compreranno polli di batteria importati da chissà dove, a rischio d'influenza aviaria. Purtroppo, a differenza degli allevatori giapponesi, nessun editore farà seppuku per la vergogna e il disonore.
Comunque vada, noi ci teniamo ben stretto Carlotto e i suoi romanzi nerissimi.(less)

Tightly written with a moral imagination that really surprised me, "Death's Dark Abyss" is not your normal crime fiction. Taking the revenge tale and turning the tables on who gets redeemed, I never knew where Carlotto was taking me.

Now I guess I know what "Mediterranean noir" is: fast paced, gripping, completely amoral, and about as noir as noir can be. Niente Alligatore,per questo libro di Carlotto, ma i soliti temi trattati nella saga dell'investigatore idealista ritornano, in un certo senso, anche in questa storia.
Interessante approfondimento del tema della vendetta e del perdono, oltre all'ormai classico riferimento alleregole non scritte di malavitosi e carcerati "d'onore".

La pietà era un sentimento che faceva parte di un’altra vita, prima che la morte avvolgesse la mia esistenza.

Come dice l’autore stesso nell’antefatto, i temi di questo durissimo romanzo sono la giustizia, la vendetta, il perdono. Liberando progressivamente un intreccio incalzante giocato su due piani narrativi che si alternano a ritmo martellante, questo romanzo analizza in modo lucido e feroce la devastazione prodotta da qualunque fatto di sangue nella vita e nell’animo di chi vi sia coinvolto.

Silvano Contin war einst ein Vertreter für edle Markenweine, der dreizehn Jahre lang mit seiner Frau Clara verheiratet war und deren achtjähriger Sohn Enrico ein liebenswürdiges Kind war. Bis zu jenem Tag im Jahre 1989, als nicht nur die Leben von Frau und Sohn ausgelöscht wurden, sondern auch das von Silvano. Fünfzehn Jahre sind vergangen, in denen Silvano unablässig den Schmerz und den Verlust fühlte und dessen einziges und zum Scheitern verurteiltes Ziel es noch ist, Beggiatios Komplizen zu finden. Bis zu dem Tag, an dem er vom Avvocato Beggiatios und vom Gefangenen selbst einen Brief erhält, in dem er gebeten wird, in einer noblen Geste des Verzeihens das Gnadengesuch des an Krebs erkrankten Häftlings zu befürworten. Dieser Brief ist ein erneuter Wendepunkt in seinem Leben, denn nun sieht er eine reelle Chance, endlich den geheimnisvollen Komplizen aufzuspüren.

Der Roman "L'oscura immensità della morte" ("Die dunkle Unermesslichkeit des Todes" scheint auf den ersten Blick für eine derart komplexe Geschichte mit 188 Seiten sehr dünn und doch gelingt es dem Autor Massimo Carlotto in kurzen Kapiteln, die abwechselnd jeweils aus der Sicht von Silvano und Raffaello geschildert sind, deren Gedanken und Gefühle, Wut und Trauer, Hoffnungen und Wünsche durch ihre eigene Stimme dem Leser nahe zu bringen.

Silvano taumelt seit dem Tod von Frau und Kind am Abgrund der Verzweiflung. Sein Alltag ist monoton mit seiner Arbeit im Reparaturservice Absatz-Blitz im Supermarkt ausgefüllt und am Ende des Tages bleibt er daheim und schaut Quizsendungen. Der Genuss am Essen ist verloren, ebenso wie der an einem guten Wein. Es ist billiger Wein aus dem Karton, der betäubt.

"Die Überlebenden müssen mit den schrecklichsten Erinnerungen weiterleben, mehr bleibt ihnen nicht. Das Problem bestand darin, eine Normalität vorzutäuschen und den Schrei zurückzuhalten, der immer häufiger ins Freie drängte […] Am liebsten hätte ich geschrien bis zur Ohnmacht, bis ich sterben würde." (p.28f)

Raffaellos Sprache bzw. seine Gedanken sind ebenso durch den Gefängnisalltag reduziert, in dem es einzig darauf ankommt, sich den Tag methodisch zu organisieren, um nicht durchzudrehen. Er verweigert die Chemotherapie, weil er sich erhofft, durch das Gnadengesuch den Weg zu ebnen, um durch Haftverschonung wegen Krankheit in die Freiheit zu gelangen, die er sich in seiner Fantasie mit seinem Anteil an der Beute in Brasilien und der besten Behandlung als ein Superleben ausmalt.

Doch keiner der beiden Männer kann dem Leser sympathisch sein, denn Identifikationsfigur ist niemand. Die Rollen als Täter und Opfer, die am Anfang scheinbar genau festgefügt sind, verschwimmen im Verlauf der Handlung, (view spoiler)(less)

SOO GOOD! The author was sentenced to a crime he did not commit, and was ultimately acquitted. Carlotto is able to provide two perspectives in the case of a murderous crime. So many questions are posed: should guilty individual be allowed a second chance? should we take the laws into our own hands and seek revenge to gain some sort of justice? The various twists in the plot make you enticed for the 145 pages this short read gives.

Dark and grim noirish thriller concerning a bank robber who kills two hostages (a woman and her young son) and the victims' father, who lives to enact revenge. The tale is told from the standpoint of the two men, who are not as far apart from a moral perspective as you might imagine. Quite gripping. It would make a good film.

This is a mean and vicious study of how a crime affects two people, and for neither is there much good out of it. Language is filthy. The images are brutal and the conclusion is not further along the road than when it started.

Violence only begets violence and none of us are truly innocent. Nor are we free from the consequences of our own violence or that of those closest to us. This book is powerful, this book is upsetting, this book is disturbing and this book is breathtaking.

Shelves: mystery-noir

Pure noir in the tradition of Hammet and Thompson, a psychological study of victim and victimiser and how the lines between them are crossed and recrossed. Much more subtle than the line between good and evil, we all know that doesn't exist. Well worth a read though I'm a Crumley sort of girl myself and there wasn't a visible light anywhere.
