Reading this novella has got me itching to read the series. I cannot wait to see how Tod fits into the series. Vincent has a fresh take on all things supernatural. Reading her stories are very refreshing, when a peron getts sick of reding stale or forced paranormal novels.

This is a great bonus story for fans of the Soul Screamers series. Unlike many of the discounted/freebie novellas that authors release, this one really enhances the story arc and provides a different and more balanced perspective. It's fun to be inside Tod's head and I was surprised at how touching some of the scenes were. I've always liked this character, but this novella made me understand and enjoy him even more.

This was my first foray into the Reaper world so I can’t comment on the others in the series. If this novella is any indication of what the others are like and the quality of writing though, I’d tell you to go grab it and the others and sit down for a fun read.

I love a snarky main characters and Tod’s wise-cracking had me laughing more than once. The story moves very fast…which left me wanting more. The characters are well developed, though, as I said, if you’ve read the other books in the series, you’ll be more familiar with their history and story line.
This story is complete enough so that you don’t have to read the others…but you’ll want to. Just saying.

Rachel Vincent writes with a delicate touch, which I very much enjoyed. It isn’t easy to pull the reader into a grim (small pun intended) story involving troubled family dynamics (Deceased father, little brother Nash) and real life issues such as troubled teens, drinking, drunken driving, responsibility, and death but she manages to do it. She also manages to toss in some romance that tugs on the heart strings. One of the magical things – besides her ability to throw humor into some very serious life events – is stirring the reader’s interest in the possibilities that most of us, probably, haven’t considered when we’re thinking about our final moments. And when is the last time you got to see and hear a Grim Reaper doing his job – with his own brand of snark – and enough foreshadowing to truly give you the creeps even while you’re chuckling at him?

There’s an entire world here, waiting to be revealed about the Bean Sidhe, Reapers, the Re-animators and more. There are also a lot of thought provoking material about life and death and living hidden in the witty banter between the characters.

If you are a fan of the Soul Screamers series you really need to read this! I really enjoyed it and I loved having the story told from Tod's point of view. If I hadn't been in love with him before reading this I definitely would have been afterwards.

The story is a prequel in the sense it takes place before Tod becomes a reaper. We get to see what he was like, plus we get to see Nash as a 15 year old and we learn of Sabine. I've heard it's best to read this after at least the third book...more

I loved this glimpse into Tod's transformation from bean sidhe to Reaper (reaper sidhe? heh). It adds new dimension to our understanding of this character while meshing with the existing portrayal of him in the main book series - which is through another's eyes, and chronologically down the line. I just realized this is a novella connected to the Soul Screamer series by Rachel Vincent. It was a great read but not recommended to start reading the series well. I have to admit, I haven't read a single book in the series which is a shame because Reaper is awesome.

I would love to read the first book first to know how the story progressed but reading Reaper was enough pull for me to divert attention to a great series. I've read numerous reviews stating how great the series was but I never got...more

I love just about everything Rachel Vincent writes! No joke! Her Shifters series was amazing and I so can't wait to read her next adult series that should come out some time next year if I remember correctly. The first novella, My Soul to Lose, told us of Kaylee's time in the hospital when she was admitted for being "odd" so to speak. And now in Reaper, we get to find out how Tod, Nash's older brother became a reaper. And boy what a story that was!

It's hard to write a review for a novella since it's already so short, but basically, like in My Soul to Lose and getting a glimpse of Kaylee's life before My Soul to Take, we get a glimpse of what Tod was like when he was still human and how he became to be a reaper. And like I said it was a very interesting story. It shines new light onto some of the other characters involved as well.

Kaylee wasn't really in this one since it was about Tod, but Nash was there and Sabine was mentioned. Sabine will be a character we see in My Soul to Steal that comes out later this month and who is already a problem child. There was a printed published short story called Fearless, that was about her in an anthology that was recently published this year, Kiss Me Deadly. I haven't read that one either.

But overall this was a very enjoyable short story. It took me maybe an hour to read. I can't remember what time I actually started it, but I know it was well before noon! I'm an early riser and I had already been reading. I finished up one book, then read this before starting another one around 11:30ish.

So I give the story 5/5 stars because it was seriously good and I love getting the backstory behind what happened to Tod to where he got to today.

And since it's currently a free download, I highly suggest reading it! Here's a link to Rachel's blog where she has listed the many places where you can get an e-copy of Reaper. Also, please note that this won't stay free forever. I don't know the cut off date, but since it just released December 1, there's still plenty of time to read it!

I still don't understand the fascination readers have for Todd. (Poor Nash). Nash would HAVE died regardless. His sneaking out of the house didn’t cause Todd’s death. Todd’s did leave the house too. I feel like Nash will forever be blamed for everything because Todd's choices seem to screw him over majorly.
Todd’s, choice to die led to Nash's guilt. Then his choice to save Addy led to Nash’s accidental drug exposure resulting into addiction. I hope Nash finds reprieved soon because he's a good kid. He feels, he loves, may be too much. In the end what I got is Todd's choice made him a reaper, soon to gradually lose his humanity, to linger, never to move on. He is charismatic … Ah… yes, but empty because his 1st assignment after his promotion was by choice he chose to take the drunk drivers soul instead of the person’s who was supposed to die. I guess he has started losing his humanity or playing god. Or revenge? Right or wrong?
Todd is no Martyr. He took his brother’s choice and changed what was supposed to be.
Nash is going to always carry the guilt his brother sentenced him to. Maybe that's why he can't seem to want to be around Todd because seeing Todd is a constant reminder of his part in Todd’s death. If anything I would say Nash and Kaylee, has something more in common BOTH are living on borrowed time and BOTH families had lied to protect them… or at least so they say. Makes me wonder when Nash’s borrowed time will end. And what he’d do when he finds out.
Great read! Vincent did a superb job and again another thought provoking read! I can’t wait for the next installment and I am anxious to see where all these leads to in the end

REAPER is the basically the back story of how Tod Hudson the bean sidhe, became the dealer of death that he is today. This novella gives us glimpse into the somewhat normal life of Tod and his brother, Nash. It's a story of choices, good and bad. It's a story of sacrifice. It's a story of loss. And a story of what is means to be family.

I've read this book in about one hour and let me tell you that it was one hell of a hour. Everything about this novella was intriguing and right on target. If anything, it made me want Tod even more.

Reaper is a novella of the Soul Screamer series by Rachel Vincent. This novella is about Tod and told from his point of view. It is a great one to read right before My Soul to Steal, because you get a minor introduction and preview of Sabine and Nash’s relationship. Tod is your typical teenager who just wants to hang out with his girlfriend, but little brother Nash has to get in the way. I have to say this book made me fall completely in love with Tod!

I have not read the rest of the Soul Screamers series, except for book one and now both novellas, but I really enjoy the world Rachel Vincent has created. I like her writing style and creativity. Plus, the books are set in Texas. I love reading books taking place in my home state.

Plot: This novella was very confusing for me. I suppose if I had read her other books I might understand more, but the tension in this story wasn't enough to completely satisfy me.

Since this is just a mid-series ebook, I’m gonna be short on my review. I only have to brief points to make:

 Finally we get to know more about Tod.
I’ve said it for the past three books, I prefer Tod by a long shot. I seriously can’t stand Nash, he’s a total idiot with a capital I.

Honestly, this is not the Tod story I was hoping for, at least not all of it.

REAPER tells the story of Tod’s last day alive, his recruitment by the Reapers, and his first few days on the job, so to speak. It is fun seeing the relationship between Nash and Tod while they are both alive, and finally learn the details about how Tod died. Plus there is an interesting twist at the very end that I’m betting will come into play in the future.

I just finished reading My Soul to Take last week, which is the first book in Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series. So when I stumbled across this little gem with a $0 price tag and having just bought a Kobo how could I resist? This was such a fun read! I had a smile on my face the entire time while reading. I can't tell a lie, this story made me love Tod (more). Told from a point both before he died (immediately before he died) to just after his death and later, we see that Tod was an irrepressible flirt from the very beginning.

Reading this and thinking back on his interactions with Nash throughout the first three books, a lot makes more sense. Its not fair to say this is a 'prequel' to My Soul to Steal since this has less to do with Sabine and Nash and more to do with Tod becoming a Reaper and wha...more
