Really enjoyed this book, took a bit to get into it. I was not thrilled how the heroine ended her life, just because she wanted to be with the boy she loved; but ... Love is a Powerful emotion. I am happy that she ended up with the correct person/soulmate. The supporting characters were very good and I enjoyed the way her friends tried to be there for her and support her, even when she wouldn't let them. Just how far would you go to be with the with the one you love?

This book was very hard for me to process emotionally. It questions your morals and challenges your beliefs and as much as you want to like something, you realize that if you don't agree...you just can't.

The only true factor I liked about this story was Amber and London. They have a very adorable relationship and there is nothing I love more then reading about childhood friends turned romance, it's always been one of the sweetest elements I look for in a read.
Their love was believable and beautiful, and Amber's memories really pulls at those hearts strings, only wanting the best for these young lovers.

But sadly, that was the only element I liked about this story.
There were just to many circumstances that just didn't work for me.
Lets start with London's behavior concerning Tristan. A loving, fierce, protective boyfriend is one thing, but to take it to that level is a whole different story and quite frankly I didn't see it fitting with London's personality when alive.
Then there is the ending, which I couldn't convince myself to agree with. There are many different ways to achieve a happily ever after, and as a sap, wanted it very much for these two, but I wish it could have been handled in a different way.
But most of all, I felt very deceived once we found out who was responsible for Amber's ultimate decision. It made me question everything I read through out the story, wanting the book to be redeemed all in the name of true love, but this particular twist can not be forgiven and therefore destroyed any positive opinion that I may have had. Even though, all is well at the very end, it was the getting there, the real reason, that was most upsetting.

In a nutshell, I don't agree with the message delivered in this book and while the love story is indeed very sweet, I couldn't love this book with the kind of ending we received. (less)

Portland, OR has kindly granted us yet another promising young author, Vone Savan. Unlike most other new writers, Savan selects Young Adults as the target audience for Soul In Love, which he classifies as a "paranormal romance." However, as an adult reader I find Savan's writing to be just as enjoyable (if not more enjoyable) than a number of the contemporary novels I have read that were aimed for adult readers. This book was given to me by a friend who knows that I like to try out new authors. It took me a long time to start it because it is definitely not the genre that I normally care for at all. However, even though I am not the target audience, I am very glad that I took the time.

First, this book didn't get five stars because it was obviously the author's first novel. Like most new authors, Savan spent a great deal of time describing the settings, characters, and the relationship. I am not sure why a new author's use of adjectives feels clunky, while authors like Stephen King who also spend pages describing small details feel natural. Whatever the reason, it pulls me out of the story so I have to knock off a few points. However, I need to reiterate that this is NOT just him. It is something that I notice about MOST new authors. So if that is the biggest problem that I can find, he's doing well.

Now for the story... The romance formula of love discovered, explored, lost, and regained is tried and true. But Savan took it somewhere new. These were childhood friends who finally decided to date, and having witnessed that dozens of times in my life, I believe that Savan accurately depicted the feelings that hormonal teenagers go through when they believe that they have found the love of their life. Nothing else matters and they get completely wrapped up in each other. Then London dies, and Amber's grief is believable. She loses herself for awhile. That happens. I bought it. That is when Savan's lack of experienced stopped pulling me out of the story because I finally cared about the characters. It is good that I finally became engaged in the story because it made what happened next feel plausible.

At this point the story heads down the paranormal path. Amber begins seeing London, feeling him, talking to him. This could be attributed to her grief, and she tries to shrug it off. But his presence is too strong. She again loses herself in her love for him. The reactions of her friends and family who care about her are all believable, even the ones who try to appease her by joining her in her attempts to contact him through the Ouija board.

The Ouija board adds a whole different element to the story that I appreciated. Any time a work of fiction leads me to want to learn more about something new, I consider it a success. I learned some stuff about the lore of contacting the dead that I wouldn't have bothered exploring on my own. Savan obviously did some research in order to properly use this plot element. As a reader, I respect authors who try to get their facts straight when they could just make something up and have it still be effective.

I don't want to talk about the end of the book because it goes someplace unexpected and I don't want to wreck it for others. While I don't want to throw in too many spoilers, I do want to address the message at the end because it seems to be the main reason that this book is getting poor reviews. So, don't read the next paragraph until after you have read the book, or unless you have already read a review that gave away the ending.

Yes, she kills herself at the end to join her love. That has been thrown out there as the reason that the overall message of the book is bad several times. But as you'll see if you read the book, she was tricked into doing it. It took chapters and chapters of the antagonist whittling away at her drive and destroying her relationships with the living people that she loves in order for her to get to that point. London does not want her to sacrifice her life to be with him. I think that most people who have lost a spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend or counseled another through such a loss would agree that the roller coaster of emotions that this situation would bring on cause people to feel suicidal. I don't feel that acknowledging that as Savan has done is that same thing as advocating it, or calling it the message of the story. The message was that love can overcome all obstacles.

Good job Savan. I'll read your next book.

"Soul in Love" is an amazing first novel for Savan. The book has the wonderful ability to draw out your emotions through a connection with the characters. I cried through the first part and I cried through the ending, because I was so involved with the storyline and the characters feelings and emotions. I felt the plot moved at a great pace and I was impressed with the satisfying explanation for the paranormal section of the book, as I am quite a skeptic.

I won this book on a goodreads giveaway! I am really not sure how to rate is book, it started out so good and ended, I hate to say it but horrible. Amber Olive is a senior in High school when her life is torn apart by the death of her boyfriend London. This book was so incredible! I loved how Vone was descriptive in all the characters. While I read this book, I begun to cry in some parts because it was just so intense. Vone described everything that Amber was feeling from beginnging to end. Just spectacular!
The ending; Well I'm sad that the ending kinda tells the reader that there will be no sequel, considering it would be hard to write in Ambers POV because of her situation. I suppose Vone could write in Lucca's POV or maybe even Cecil's; if...more

Soul in Love was a very interesting novel. During the beginning of the novel I felt like I wasn't going to enjoy because it was very sad. However mysterious things started to happen that made me want to continue reading. While I was reading this at night I even became a bit spooked. The end kind of shocked me. But it was still really good and enjoyable.

Vone Savan is a fan of all fiction. Fading Into Magic, the first in a Middle Grade fantasy series was released on October 25th. Soul in Love, a dark paranormal romance, was his debut novel. In his spare time, he enjoys watching Hayao Miyazaki films, playing vintage Final Fantasy video games, and reading on his Kindle Fire.
