This is totally a young adult book. If your looking for something like the dark hunters series, its not here, so you don’t get the romance and hardcore action. I would recommend this book to people who read YA books, but if YA is not your cup of tea like me, well you may want to read more than a couple of reviews before buying. There is action, and humor and teens that turns into zombies, yep, picture it, some of the football team as zombies coming after to kill Nick.

This book starts with Nick at age fourteen when he is first introduced into the supernatural world: first by Kyrian saving him from being beaten to death by his "friends" and second after zombies attack at his school. His powers as the Malachai are slowly unleashed and Nick finally realizes that there is a world out there that he never knew about.

I didn’t start this with positive thoughts. My reasons were:
• I didn’t depart the Dark Hunter series with the best feelings;
• Never really liked Nick;
• Wasn’t sure of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s ability to write a good YA novel.

I skimmed quite a bit through this one...and still feel I wasted a LOT of time. Yes...these are hours of my life I'll never get back.

The book dragged on trying to get started as we went to school with Nick and watched him persecuted more thoroughly than Bilbo at an Orc convention. We suffered through him having to live on powdered eggs...with maybe a little bacon, sometimes not even out of date (Nick's mom is poor but noble....not real understanding at times, but noble. Oh and also very importan...more I skimmed quite a bit through this one...and still feel I wasted a LOT of time. Yes...these are hours of my life I'll never get back.

The book dragged on trying to get started as we went to school with Nick and watched him persecuted more thoroughly than Bilbo at an Orc convention. We suffered through him having to live on powdered eggs...with maybe a little bacon, sometimes not even out of date (Nick's mom is poor but noble....not real understanding at times, but noble. Oh and also very important, don't forget that, very important...take care of your mom). We struggled with Nick being misunderstood, abused, and just wronged. Then we finally got into the story.

There were a few good humorous quips, references to pop-culture, movies, electronic games etc. and so on. But other than that I just got tired and burned out on zombies, time slips, demons and a story I just couldn't get into. (There are also warped mythological characters, shape shifters, "werebeasts"(werecritters?), "Daemons", and assorted other monsters including sort of putrid flying monkeys.) The book begins to tell a mildly interesting story about the last 2 chapters, but every time I got "mildly interested" the thing wandered off and managed to hit the annoyance button (specifics would contain spoilers...). Other than a few "story related" items like distorted folklore references, there were SOOOO MANY places where there were lines like "before he could answer another wave of zombies interrupted", or "I'll have to tell you that (important plot point) later, we're here". You get the picture?

I didn't "hate" this book, it escapes a 1 star rating (barely...:) but it just didn't (for me) ever jell, it failed to hold together, it just didn't work. Sorry.

I know however some will like it, taste is like that otherwise boiled okra, stinky cheese, Ator (The Fighting Eagle) movies, and Gilligan's Island would never have staid around as they have, so if you like it enjoy. As I said, it has it's moments. I even laughed at a few of the "quips", but the story didn't quite make it for me.

By the way, did I say how annoying the book was at times???? (less)

I enjoyed this first installment of CON. Sherrilyn Kenyon has convinced me with her talent. She was able to keep me wrapped up in the world she created for Nick. Be it adult romance or young adult fantasy, she's built a solid foundation with intriguing creatures.

When the inevitable paranormal antics ensue, Nick's seems almost blase'. To be fair Sherrilyn Kenyon writes the scenes with an air of humor. Revealing the enemy as something of interest instead of crap your pants horror. Nick's reaction is very 21st century teen. His crush on Nekoda will be something to look out for.

The plot of Infinity varies from Nick being introduced to Kyrian, to him fighting supernatural creatures and having NO idea there are others right beside him fighting along with him. Ash makes an appearance for all you DH fans =D

In all it is worth investing in this series if your a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon/Dark Hunters. It is fun seeing the Dark Hunters from Nick's POV, because its all new to him. Also non-Dark Hunter fans you don't have to read the Dark Hunters series to enjoy CON but I highly recommend you get intimate with Kyrian and Ash at the very least, and any other main characters introduced in the CON series. WARNING: The Dark Hunters series in meant for adults and has adult content.

Nick himself is a powerful being that even Ash is concerned about. The reason there will be 10 books in this series, I'm guessing, is because Nick has 10 lessons to learn to hone his skills. 'Uncle Ambrose' warns him about holding a grudge. Remember what happens between Ash and Nick? I was getting chills when Ambrose was trying hard to break that hold over Nick's heart to want revenge for what happened to Nick at 14. (less)

Plot in a sentence and a half: Nick is 14 and is bullied at school because he is poor and his Mum is kind of a stripper, but that’s not the story. So one day Nick is with his (so called) friends and they decide to mug an old couple, Nick steps in and stops it, they shoot him and were going to kill him if Kyrian (seen in Night Pleasures) hadn’t stepped in and saved him. He ends up being dragged into a world of Zombies, Vampires, tall Goth gods and general craziness.

What I thought of it: (view spoiler)

The characters: Too much to say. We get to see so many of the characters in the Dark Hunter worlds, younger versions of most of them. This is the perfect look into the Dark Hunter world and it’s characters. I would have read this book just for the characters (they are dead drop amazing). Here we see some of the best-developed characters (there are tonnes of them) I’ve seen in a while. Even the ones that were only in the book for a page or two leave a mark and are memorable. They all have different personalities. No one is one-dimensional.

The writing: The writing is what got me hooked on Sherrilyn Kenyon. I loved this writing, the sarcasm, boy there was a lot of it, and the fist sentence says that. This has got to be one of the best first sentences I have ever read in a book. It had me laughing right from the first page.

The book does not disappoint, there are so many great lines throughout the book and this is what I would consider a perfect YA novel (although some may disagree).

Overall: Read it, it’s a great read. Almost all of my friends have read it, my copy is so used that it looks old, really old. And I only bought it about a year ago. I recommend this book to YA lovers. And despite the blurb this book is not a major book about Zombies. SO, don’t let your reservations on Zombies hold you back. I also recommend this book to Action/Zombie/Vampire lovers. This book is a great paranormal read. Can I say that enough?(less)

Never read Kenyon before because her books just never sounded interesting to me. For some reason this new journey of hers into the YA fantasy field caught my attention. Infinity started out just like every other paranormal novel, albeit with a slower pacing than most. Nick Gautier is introduced, his background briefly touched upon, and the paranormal aspect stirred in. I was expecting some sort of yay-let’s-all-go-stake-vampires novel, when WA-BAMMM…

Kluci si z něj rádi dělají boxovací pytel a jeho matku častují jednou šťavnatější urážkou za druhou. Nickova matka totiž pracuje jako striptérka, aby je oba uživila. Jeho otec totiž momentálně hnije ve vězení.

Šikanu a nelehký život Nick zvládá docela obstojně. Jen se možná až příliš často dostává do rvaček a dalších problémů. A jeden takový jej dostane do pořádného průšvihu. Ten zahrnuje jednu divnější a nebezpečnější bytost vedle druhé, kupu nových a záhadných lidí... a v neposlední řadě také zástup krvežníznivých a masochtivých zombíků.

Tahle kniha je naprostá šílenost. Jako byste jeli na horské dráze a nevěděli, jestli se vám ten pocit, kdy se v několikakilometrové rychlosti řítíte do neznáma a řvete na plné pecky, líbí a jste prostě napumpovaní adrenalinem... anebo je to prostě ujetost nad ujetost. Řeknu vám, že jsem to od sebe naprosto nedokázala odlišit. Hned od začátku vpadnete do Nickova života a postupně na vás skáče jedna postava za druhou, děje se jedna šílenější věc vedle druhé, střídají se pohledy postav jako na běžícím páse... a dobrou polovinu knihy vlastně netušíte, co se děje a jestli se vám to vůbec líbí.

Jenže Nick je neskutečně symaptická postava. Nemá vůbec lehký život, ale pere se s ním prostě po svém. Už dlouho jsem nečetla tak vtipnou a sarkastickou knihu. Nick je prostě bezkonkurenční postava, kterou nemůžu k žádné jiné přirovnat. Protože taková nejspíš ani neexistuje - anebo jsem se s ní ještě nesetkala. Sherrilyn kluka puberťáka vystihla dokonale. Jasně, nejsem kluk, takže netuším, co mají dospívající kluci v hlavě. Ale Sherrilyn o tom má hodně dobrou představu a... prostě vás dostane. Jednou, dvakrát, třikrát...

Sherrilyn je známá hlavně díky své úspěšné adult sérii Dark Hunters, která čítá více jak 20 dílů a dočkala se také svého manga zpracování. Chronicles of Nick má být desetidílná young adult prequel série, která se zaměřuje na dospívání Nicka. Jelikož jsem původní DH sérii nečetla a ještě dlouho bude trvat, než se k ní dostanu a než si ji vůbec přečtu, nemám nejmenší potuchy, co která postava z původní série vlastně v CON dělá, co je a co od ní můžu čekat. Ještě míň vím, co se vlastně z Nicka vyklube. A je to jenom dobře.

Protože takhle bláznivá kniha vás prostě chytne a nepustí. Když nebudete číst, budete uvažovat o tom, co se na dalších stránkách asi bude dít. Co za bláznivost si na vás Sherrilyn vymyslí. Co bude s Nickem. Co bude s tou hromadou postav, ve kterých prostě budete mít guláš. A budete uvažovat, kdo je přítel a kdo ne. Skvělá kniha. Možná nesedne úplně všem, ale já jsem z ní opravdu nadšená a Nicka jsem si hodně, vážně, vážně hodně, oblíbila.

The author alternated from clunky dialogue and inconsistent characterization to truly funny scenes and interesting ideas. I was past my personal allowable quitting point when I started to get annoyed by the writing, and I was interested in reading more by the time I got to the end. So I guess I'd say it was a decent start and finish, with some problems in between. I'll probably try out another, just to see what happens, but it may be a while.

If you're expecting much from this book after reading the blurb, then beware! Other than the Zombie Apocalypse part, you won't be finding anything else in the book. The name Dark-Hunters are only mentioned and never explained. It shouldn't be assumed that the reader knows the information because they read a previous series (which I didn't). Nick riesce, grazie alla sua incredibile intelligenza, ad ottenere una borsa di studio per una delle scuole private più importanti della città e la madre farà di tutto per riuscire a fargli frequentare quella scuola, unica speranza per Nick per tirarli entrambi fuori da quella situazione di degrado.

Peccato che sembra essere proprio questa scuola la fonte primaria dei guai del ragazzo... Improvvisamente qualcuno decide di prendere a morsi un compagno di classe, divorandolo letteralmente. Zombi? Nick, da bravo scettico, non ha nessuna intenzione di credere che improvvisamente un braco di zombi stiano facendo una passeggiata sotto il sole di New Orleans. Quando sarà lui a diventare il loro banchetto prediletto deciderà che è meglio aprire gli occhi se non vuol essere digerito dai suoi compagni di scuola...

Con questo romanzo la Kenyon abbandona momentaneamente il paranormal romance per gettarsi nell'urban fantasy d'azione. Il suo stile è, come sempre, ironico, arguto e brillante. I dialoghi fra i personaggi sono assolutamente geniali, al punto che è quasi impossibile per il lettore non scoppiare a ridere per le situazioni assurde e le continue frecciate che sembrano lanciarsi ogni istante. Nick - personaggio principale - è al centro di tutta la vicenda e l'autrice ci sorprende svelandoci che dietro a questo ragazzino dalla lingua tagliente e dall'aria scanzonata si nasconde molto più che un fragile e semplice umano.

Nick è l'erede della famiglia dannata dei Malachai e la sua stessa esistenza sembra destinata al male e alla distruzione. Perfino il grande Acheron non sembra in grado di leggere il passato e il futuro di questo ragazzo, l'unica cosa che sa per certo è che il suo stesso futuro è intrecciato irrimediabilmente al "marmocchio". Le Parche gli hanno impedito di poter "vedere" e quindi di manipolare il futuro... L'unica cosa certa sembra essere l'immediata simpatia che intercorre fra Nick e il millenario Ash.

Ma in cosa consiste questa "eredità", che fa di Nick una preda ambita da tutte le creature dell'oscurità?

L'autrice ci svela il suo passato, collegandosi ai numerosi tasselli già in nostro possesso (grazie alla saga Dark Hunters) con grande abilità anche se sono presenti alcuni scivoloni, probabilmente dettati dal cambio di genere. In alcuni punti la narrazione si fa un po' confusa, sembra dar per scontata la conoscenza di molte creature oscure e inserisce nella trama una moltitudine di esseri diversi , forse, un po' troppo repentinamente.

A parte questo particolare, il libro ne esce nettamente vincente, soprattutto grazie all'inesauribile ironia e bravuta dell'autrice nel creare personaggi originali, divertenti, affascinanti e sexy. Nick Gautier nonostante non sia un "cacciatore oscuro" ha un fascino tutto particolare, un protagonista degno di questo nome!(less)

"Oh, Nick."
I suddenly felt very, very curious. You don't just go "Oh, Nick" to any character. And so I began reading and thought...
"ZOMBIES? WHAT THE HECK?"
And then I kept reading.
And I still sort of feel like "ZOMBIES?! WHAT THE HECK?"
But I also feel like
"WHERE THE HECK IS THE SEQUEL? SOMEBODY GET ME THE SEQUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

To be honest I was confused about this novel. There was so many different things going on which I was sort of clueless about since I've never read the Dark - Hunter Series yet. But I definitely know that that series is on my bucket-list.

The stories are from Nick's time as a high school student before he is an adult. I have only read one Dark Hunter book, and it was by accident. I have read Acheron because it was on the "recommend" shelf at my local library. I had no idea it was part of a series, but I thought the book was very well written.

The Dark Hunter series is loosely based on Greek mythology. Artemis is the goddess who makes the Dark Hunters: nocturnal warriors who protect humanity from demons and other dangerous creatures. Nick Gautier is hanging with the wrong crowd one night when he realizes that his so-called friends are planning to mug an elderly couple. Nick tries to help the couple, and his friends shoot him and leave him for dead. Dark Hunter Kyrian saves his life, and pays for his hospitalization. Nick soon becomes Kyrian's squire to reimburse him for his hospital bills. Nick soon discovers that the world isn't as it seems: There are demons, demigods, vampires, shape-shifters, and Dark Hunters attempting to keep everyone in line. Nick also discovers that he is actually half demon, a Malachai whose destiny is to destroy the world and everyone in it.

That is a lot of pressure for a fourteen year old.

In each book, Nick learns more about his developing powers and his dual nature. He is such a complex character, and my heart breaks for him in every single book. In the first book, Nick struggles to survive as his classmates are turning into flesh-eating zombies from watching a video game. In Book Two, he faces a sadistic football coach who demands Nick steal personal items from classmates in order to possess and control them. In Book Three demons who want Nick to embrace his dark side have found him, and he must learn to fight them. Plus a miserable human is posting horrible lies and photoshopped images on the internet about the kids at Nick's high school.

Going to school, getting good grades, and staying out of trouble becomes increasingly difficult for Nick.

I can certainly understand how young adults would love this series. I love Nick, and I so badly want him to remain the good, sweet soul he is now, the son who is so good to his mother, the friend who is loyal, and the squire who works hard to serve his Dark Hunter. I cannot wait until Book 4 is released!

I've had this book on my shelf for a very long time. (There are a lot of books that have been on my shelf for a long time, but that's another story. Sigh.) I have read a few Sherrilyn Kenyon adult books and enjoyed them quite a bit. This was the first one of her YA's that I've read, but I don't think it'll be the last.

Infinity was an interesting read. It may be the fact that it has a lot of references to Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series which I haven’t read yet so most of the time I had no idea what as going on.

Nick Gautier was an interesting character. His sarcasm was cool at first but as the book progresses it came to be annoying. I liked it when he’s being sarcastic but not all the time. It started off as a relatively inocuous fun YA read. The characters are clever and silly and it was entertaining.. at first.
Then it jumps the shark as the author begins introducing so many different creatures people and empty hinted at story lines that never come to fruitiion. She makes a HUGE mess of it and it goes from a fun read to a convoluted non-sensical almost indeciperapble mess.

When I first started reading this book my first thought was, why hadn’t I read this sooner? This story had me in its grasp from the minute I picked it up. I found the prologue to be perfect. Now usually I am not a fan of prologues, but this one did exactly what it was supposed to do, make me want to keep reading.

The book started out with an interesting premise and great characters. The relationships and character dynamics were wonderful and had me hooked. I even loved the early hints of supernatural goings-on. But as the book progressed, more and more characters were thrown at me without really any explanation or time for development. The relationships and character dynamics were wonderful and had me hooked. I even loved the early hints of supernatural goings-on. But as the book progressed, more and more characters were thrown at me without really any explanation or time for development. Things were accepted far too swiftly by the main character, and there wasn't enough time to really understand how some characters fit into the storyline before even more characters were being mentioned or introduced (and then never given enough screen time to be memorable or even more than a name).

It was around the end of the beginning and towards the middle that the book began to feel more like it was just a continuation of the Dark Hunters adult books, instead of the first book in a YA series that just happens to be in the same world. This is problematic because not all of the readers of the YA series have or would be able to read the adult books, and so would be clueless about all the new faces. It's also a problem because the book was marketed (to me, at least) as a reboot of the Dark Hunters series, something that a new reader could come to without any previous knowledge and enjoy. That simply wasn't the case.

On top of that, readers were given some knowledge about characters that was never revealed to Nick, despite how useful it would have been. And so I kept getting flustered when I knew something that never, ever got revealed to the MC (or even really impacted the story beyond giving some background on side characters that wasn't entirely relevant).

By the final sixty or seventy pages of the 460-some page book, things finally began to come together and make a bit of sense. The action scenes were interesting, as were the choices and self-discovery that Nick made. The book had finally stopped throwing confusing and irrelevant characters at us, and was back to caring about the core cast and relationships between the core characters. Until the last few (five or ten, even) pages, where things got confusing again and then ended on a cliffhanger.

So while both the beginning and the end were interesting, I think the frustration of having too many characters and not enough background information or world-building being given made it a two star read for me. Even though there were some characters that I loved, I simply don't think I want to continue the series, especially since I have a feeling that it's going to get even more confusing in the second book. Instead, I might start the adult series, to try to understand the few characters I truly did care about, and to get the actual history and background of some of the characters that weren't given a chance to develop.

Overall, I'd say it'd be an interesting read for previous fans of the Dark Hunters series, but not a good intro for new readers or those who are hoping to be able to enjoy the YA series as its own entity.(less)

Nick is 14, poor, bullied and sarcasm is his only defense. Live with his erotic-dancer mother in their cramped home which have no tv, let alone a PC. But, Nick manage to get into Richard’s High School with his scholarship.
