Travel statistics say that baby boomers travel more than any other age group in America—and that an ever increasing number of them are looking for ways to spend their leisure time in substantial, meaningful ways. One especially fast-growing area of interest is the "experience-driven" or "wellness" vacation, a proactive approach based on the idea that true recreation involv...more

In our increasingly virtual, air-conditioned, and static lifestyles, the concept of vacation is evolving. Though there is a time and place for sitting by the resort pool with a never-ending mai-tai, people are beginning to seek out vacations that promise adventure, purpose, and spiritual or intellectual growth. In The 100 Best Vacations to Enrich Your Life, Pam Grout humorously and heartwarmingly outlines many familiar adventures (Close Up in Washington DC, Habitat for Humanity, National Parks,...more

This book was an eye-opener. I half expected that I would only thumb through it, skipping to the ones that sounded most interesting to me, but I pretty much read it cover to cover. Some of them felt a bit repetitive but, for the most part, there was trivia, history or other bits of information tied to each suggestion that I truly did find interesting.

The irony is that I read it while taking several days off from work myself, during which I planned to tackle some overdue home projects (which I ne...more

Some of the vacations are not too outrageous - in price or plausibility. But several of the websites listed no longer exist, and in searching for the geisha school of London, I found a few posts on different blogs that criticized the commercialization of the traditions for superficial thrills. Given that lackluster recommendation, I wouldn't trust the cited sources without some serious vetting. Some of the ideas were great, but when I finally win the lotto, or earn my fortune, I am sure I'll hav...more

I read about a camp featured in this book. The camp (http://www.folkschool.org/) sounds amazing:

John C. Campbell Folk School provides experiences in non-competitive learning and community life that are joyful and enlivening. Located in scenic Brasstown, North Carolina, the Folk School offers year-round weeklong and weekend classes for adults in craft, art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, nature studies, photography and writing.

It was featured as one of the *The 100 Best Vacations to Enrich Yo...more

John gave me this book for Christmas this year. It is amazing. I am, of course, biased a bit, because our all-time favorite spot to vacation- John C. Campbell Folk School, is the 1st listing in the book. However, this is just this beginning for me...there are SO many amazing adventures to be had that are described in this book. It is amazing, amazing, amazing. Now if only we had an unlimited amount of time and finances to pursue this all...haha!

Two words: Spring. Fever. It doesn't help that this woman seems to have exactly the same taste that I do: a vacation digging up dinosaurs in Montana? Learning Spanish in Mexico? Sign me up! What's most impressive is that many books like this have a lot of filler and useless information--but she covers it all: good description, a variety of price ranges offered, and genuinely cool and offbeat ideas I wouldn't have thought of myself!

What a lovely sort of book to have.

This book makes me want to take a million different vacations. There are some awesome ideas in here and not all of them are really expensive. Arts and Crafts, Volunteer Vacations- you name it!!!! I need to start planning.

Some fun websites to look at, but not a lot of vacations that fall into my price range or abilities with 3 kids - though definitely some ideas for later on in life!!
