Dead of Wynter
by
Spencer Seidel (Goodreads Author)
Dolly, it’s your mother.” Dolly. Jackie Ruth Wynter had called Alice that for years. The conversation that followed led her right back to the place she had run from for years. Her twin brother, younger by just a minute or so, had been fading, transforming into an image of their drunken, narrow-eyed father. Now her father was dead, and her brother, Chris, missing.

QUICK THOUGHTS: Spencer Seidel is a terrific storyteller that is not afraid to take risks with his plot. This book was a dark thriller that kept you guessing till almost the very end. I pretty much thought I had it figured out about 1/3 of the way through and was completely wrong. Best kind of thriller on the market is when you can't figure out who did it!

This novel was really divided into two parts - Alice Wynter's story, and her brother Chris Wynter's story. I'd like to talk about each of their parts individually.
Alice's story was pretty straight-forward. She was a woman who had been determined to leave her past behind. She had gotten married, left her hometown and her family drama in an effort to remake herself into someone entirely different. When Alice is forced to face her past after the death of her father, all of the memories that come ba...more

Prepare yourselves for a murder mystery/thriller that grabs you from the Prologue and refuses to let you go until the last word. The main character, Alice Wynter, is in constant turmoil over her past as well as her present. The sudden death of her father, and ominous disappearance of her twin brother draws her away from her broken marriage. She reluctantly returns to her childhood home in Redding, Maine to help her mother, but finds herself involved in helping to figure out who killed her father...more
I loved this book. I read it quicker than I have read any book in quite awhile. I literally did not want to put it down. The story jumps back and forth between the present time, when Alice goes back to Redding to be with her family and 1984, which is where the circumstances that drive the present day events started. You get just little bits of the story at a time, some I was able to guess, some not so much. Just when you thought you were going to get some juicy morsel the author would turn the s...more
"Dead of Wynter" is not your typical mystery. There is a mystery, the death of Papa Wynter, but the story is as much about Dolly/Alice's relationships with her family, her brother Chris's high school years, and the secrets we keep and their consequences. Seidel delves into the psychology of the characters and examines their flaws, foibles and morals. The death of Papa Wynter, and Chris Wynter's disappearance, serve as the catalyst for the events in the book.

This novel opens with a bang as we meet Chris Wynter running through the woods from someone who died 25 years ago.
We then meet Alice Dunn (nee Wynter), a successful marketing executive in a seemingly loveless marriage of 18 years. She "escaped" from the small Maine town where she grew up and is outwardly successful. She tries not to think of her "Wynter" family - her father and brother, both drunks, and her jug wine-d...more

I'm glad to get an ARC of the book. It's a debut from new author, Spencer Seidel and this book is a keeper. I totally love a family secret and when the gave a full details and dig in into the secret, it's a wow. This book is something that I'm looking for. A book that is a book that you can't put down, totally absorbed as it makes you to keep reading and find what will happen in the end. The story has a mix between the present and the past but it easily to keep it on your reading track. I love t...more
Dead of Wynter is a tight and gripping novel which will keep you guessing until the very end. I am seriously impressed with the writing talent of Mr. Seidel. There are secrets that do no harm and then there are secrets that come back to haunt you. Alice Wynter has long been keeping secrets and now her family may be paying the ultimate price. The action and thrills keep you on your toes! Dead of Wynter is a wicked good novel - pick it up and find yourself lost in a mystery that spans generations.
From the very beginning, the reader learns that something is really wrong. Something bad is going on. It's just unclear what.
And then there's a murder. And someone goes missing. And people start seeing ghosts. Or at least they think they do. Maybe they're just seeing things ...
Fast-paced, intriguing, and full of twists and turns. Dead of Wynter keeps the reader guessing and on the edge of her (or his) seat.

This is the novel every mystery lover longs for.
Suspense, chilling to the bone, and no clue to where it is bringing you.
A horrible evil is slumbering under the surface, ready to take you by surprise and scare the hell out of you. Just be prepared, you’ll need it if you dare to read thiS creepy good thriller.

Engaging novel. It stirred up a lot of thoughts about the past and things we suppress and do not deal with. I read this in about four sittings which for me is quite fast. I might of even read it through in one night but I try to resist the temptation of gobbling it up like a good desert.
Thanks Spencer!
I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway. This is a very, very good novel that I could not put down. The author does a really good job of not only telling the reader about the current mystery but also interweaving past events that have a role in the what is currently happening to the characters. I also have to say I did not see the twist at the end coming.
An extraordinarily chilling debut novel. My full review may be read on my book review blog Rundpinne.
Such a thrilling read! It kept me turning the pages late into the night!
This was a dark story that shows how much a person can do in an attempt to erradicate their past. It also shows that no matter what, your past cannot be totally erased. It shows the toll living in a dysfunctional family can really take on someone.

**********THIS IS A GOODREAD CONTEST WIN!!!!**********
This was a very interesting crime/mystery novel. It involved a person running/hiding from there past. While some of the family members tried to keep the secrets hidden. There was a very interesting twist and something totally unexpected to happen with the book. Worth reading. The author keeps the reader in suspense.

I really enjoyed reading Dead of Wynter. I was fortunate to receive an advance reader's copy. From the first sentence, this crime thriller pulled me in and held on tight. I'm an avid reader and a thriller junkie. It's rare for me to find myself unable to predict the outcome of a mystery, but the twist in Dead of Wynter caught me by surprise. This is the most wonderful gift a mystery lover can receive: a well-written story with a true surprise.
