My Two Chinas: the memoir of a Chinese counter-Revolutionary is an in-depth look of the struggle of Baiqiao Tang as he went from being a student leader during the pro-democracy movement, to improsonment under the charges of being a counter-revolutionary, to becoming a voice to free China. I am drawn to books about cultures, personal struggles within, nobility vs. brute behavior, and i think because when push comes to shove, in our own small lives, or my own small life, i want always to exhibit nobility even in the face of grievous oppression. Such is the book by Tang Baiqiao.

Another addition to my First Reads library!

This is a fascinating glimpse into Chinese life that the Chinese government surely hates for outsiders to see. The story centers on Tang Baiqiao and his unplanned journey from student to "counterrevolutionary" to tortured political prisoner to exile. Tang's passion for his China, as well as for the China he always hoped would emerge if democracy were given a chance there, resonates throughout the book.
