Bedanya, konsekuensi pel...more
This is one of those manga you look at and pass over because you think it's nothing special.
Believe me, it is.
Despite being called "Pet Shop of Horrors," it's actually not all that horrific. If anything, it's got a hint of the original fairy tales in which the wolf eats Little Red or the Step-Sisters get their toes and heals chopped off and the eyes pecked out. With a ton of laughs thrown in.

Pet Shop of Horrors is a manga by Matsuri Akino. It is set in the heart of Chinatown. Enter Count D's pet shop, a place where you can find a multitude of pets. These pets can range from cats and dogs to the most exotic, but they often will take a form to match a person's deepest desires. The mysterious man running the shop will be willing to sell you these animals, but under contract. These contracts often have three terms, varying with each individual pet. If any of these circumstances are brok...more

My friend Ellie brought this back to school after Thanksgiving Break and lent it to me, saying that it was 'like a series of morality tales' and that she'd loved it as a kid. If I may make a horrible pun, I'd say it's more a series of mortality tales than morality tales. I didn't really find anything particularly moral in the stories, except maybe that if the creepy guy in that one suspicious-looking petshop tells you to do something with the bizarrely human-like creature he sells you, you shoul...more
This is just completely bizarre and campy, but enjoyable nonetheless.
So basically, there's this androgynous guy named "Count D" (HA) who runs a black market pet shop out of Chinatown. His self-centered or otherwise flawed customers come to him seeking exotic, one-of-a-kind animals to satisfy their emotional needs, and he sells them animals that for whatever reason, always look like humans. Before he allows his customers to purchase an "animal," he requires them to sign a contract detailing what...more

This was a very interesting story; it revolves around a mysterious pet shop owner named Count D who seems to be able to get his hands on all sorts of mythical and mysterious creatures to sell to his customers. He will make you sign a contract though with very strict rules on the care of the animals, if you do not follow the rules as stated, the pet show will not be held responsible for the outcome and I can personally guarantee you they are never pleasant after having read this. There is gore an...more

It has some of the mysterious and wonderous feel of xxxholic and Mushishi. It's also episodic like Mushishi, Natsume Yuujinchou, and to a slightly lesser extent xxxholic. It's more macabre than Natsume usually is, thus the "Horrors" in its title. It revolves around a mysterious pet shop in Chinatown, NYC that deals in pets which seem to have a supernatural aspect. More often than not they appear humanoid, but they also seem to have an animal form. I'm not yet sure when or to whom the animal form...more
This series is like a modern idea of Aesop's fables. There is a message behind each chapter and a lesson to be learned.
While it says older teen on the cover most of this manga is suitable for 13 and up. The stories are moving and disturbing by turn. Not everyone has a happy ending and only because they didn't follow the pet shop keeper's advice. The art work is beautiful and can be quite stunning at times.

A beautifully drawn, well put together series of short horror/supernatural stories surrounding a mysterious petshop in Chinatown selling special pets who may not be what they seem, but only under a strict contract of special pet-care which must be obeyed, or there are dire consequences. The stories are great and the art is beautiful. My only quibble is that the artist has some trouble drawing animals.
This was a really good and creepy series. Although at first I wished the series was longer, but by the time I was through reading it, I think 10 volumes was enough. There were some parts that made my stomach turn and made me have nightmares, but it is really good read. I like the chracters, the plot, and the random funny moments.
I have never read any manga before. A coworker recommended this series, so I tried the first book. It was pretty cool - more thematic substance than I was expecting. The artwork was good eye candy, but it looked like the other manga artwork I've seen in passing. It would have been cool if it was in color.
One of my favorite horror genre.
Well, ALL my manga books were read when I was in High school.
But it still is fun to read it sometimes.
This is one of those books that makes you look at Japanese people differently.
I tell ya, they can be really weird sometimes.
But strangely intriguing !

Well...
What to say...
First, I read this manga because it was sitting in a pile with a bunch of other manga in my teacher's classroom and it was one of the only first-in-a-series.
Second, it's kind of disturbing. The author is certainly... um... ok, I don't want to say 'demented', because it's actually a rather good manga, very well drawn, but.. erm... 'demented' is pretty close to what you'd have to say. But I'll let you be the judge of the series.

A fun manga suggestion from Ms. Simile. :) Twisted stories about a pet shop that sells animals that look remarkably like humans. Beware if you don't follow the correct instructions of the pet shop owner, though!
Complete in English at 10 volumes. Continued in Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo.
This is one of those series that I develop a craving for. It kind of creeps up on me, and then, when the time is right, I treat myself to this delicacy.
The stories are all about justice vs. venegance. Flesh eating rabbits, mermaids born out of lost loves, dragons leaping into the sky...all orchestrated by the mysterious Count D.

okay so petshop of horror was simply amazing. while i read the sequel first--new petshop of horror, i thought the original concept of having some 'horror-fairytale' creature is not really bad at all, in fact, it was really amazing. sometimes the story can be so touching yet frightening, sometimes the story is very bright. even the conspicuous owner of the petshop--count D--was truly a dramatic-scary-vampireness at first, at the later chapter he ensembles a bright comedic relief which added spice...more

I read and own the whole 10 volume series. So no, not every story was perfect, wonderful or 5 stars, and I will say I was disappointed by the ending. But...overall, this is one of the best manga series I've read. The characters are real, believable(ish...this is manga) and the stories are convoluted and creepy and filled with sexual tension. Remember in the movie Gremlins, how there were those three rules ("No water; no food after midnight; no bright light.") and how, of course, the rules got br...more
The book that started it all...
I absolutely loved this book! If you want a really good horror manga, try this one. The artwork is gorgeous and the storylines in each chapter flow smoothly. It makes one wonder if a place like this actually exists, would you seek a pet from this enigmatic place where the animals look like humans? If these pets could be a blessing in disguise or a nightmare waiting to steal your very soul. Who knows? Plus it has its funny parts every now and then. ^^

readers who don't mind not having a big ol' plot
Pet Shop of Horrors fits pretty securely into the "macabre shoujo" category. It centers around the mysterious Count D, who runs a pet shop that caters to the desires of the customers... except that sometimes those customers die gruesome deaths.
Episodic series without a big ol' plot sometimes aren't to my liking, but I really love this series. Some of the pet stories bring tears to my eyes, and I think above all else, this series is about humanity and all its virtues and vices.
