It's a fine bright day, and all the animals are working--all except Anansi, that is! He's sleeping, as usual. Warthog, Lion, and Zebra laugh so hard at his messy house that they wake him up. Anansi stomps off in a huff--right into an amazing secret! Hyena has a magic stick that follows his orders. If Anansi steals the stick, he'll never have to work again, and his home wil...more

This was the same as the other Anansi books we've read. Julia and I both totally love Janet Stevens' illustrations and we both totally love Eric A. Kimmel's stories. We disagree on the narrator whose name I now forget. Julia likes all of the voices, especially Anansi the Spider's while I can't stand Anansi's voice.
So far all of the Anansi books we've read have been audio books (with paperback prints for following along) so the next one will probably be only print so I can see which is pref...more

Reading this book, I was reminded intensely of Strega Nona.

Of course, this sort of story - a "Sorcerer's Apprentice" or "Why the Sea is Salt" sort of tale, where a magical device gets out of hand and won't stop, is common throughout the world. And now that I've told you THAT you probably have the whole story in your mind already.

This version is better than some versions of that story I've seen, but not as good as others (for example, Strega Nona itself...more

I really liked this book because the pictures were so colorful and story line was great. I couldn't wait to turn the page as I read the book. The story is about a very lazy spider who steals a magic stick because the spider saw that it did whatever it was asked to do. Until one day the spider asked the magic stick to water the plants except the spider forgot and fell asleep. So the magic stick kept watering the plants until a lake was formed. By the end of the story the spider was still the...more

I love Ananci stories. He's one of my favorite mythical characters. And Kimmel's books are great.

This one isn't my favorite. That would be Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock. But it's still a funny story.

We enjoyed listening to this book read aloud on audiocassette as we followed along with the book. It's a funny trickster tale and it has great illustrations.

This kit from our local library came with an audiocassette and a paperback book with ISBN 0823417638 / ISBN13 9780823417636.

Not my cup of tea. I'd pair this with The Little Red Hen or Two of Everything, and the author's note in the back also suggests connections to a Liberian story called The Magic Hoe, and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Anansi is indolent, steals, causes damage to others, and lies ... with no resulting remorse or change.

Anasi is being lazy and does not want to clean so he decides to steal the magic stick of the hyena. Anasi and the magic stick take the cleaning a little too far.

Students could write a tale of their own of Anasi and the magic stick. What would the magic stick do for them? Would they use it wisely or not?

Trying to find a way to shirk his work, Anansi causes problems. Use of repetitious phrase to make the magic stick work. Not sure if this is an African tale or if the author just used African animals to tell his story. Great illustrations.

(Picture Book) "A West African tale: Anasi the Spider steals Hyena's magic stick so he won't have to do the chores, but when the stick's magic won't stop, he gets more than he bargained for."
